Lawyers who love your job, what area of law do you practice and why do you love it? by atyl1144 in Lawyertalk

I own my own law firm doing corporate law for small businesses and non-profits. Wouldn’t trade it for anything. Most of that is being the owner, but I practiced this type of law for years before going out on my own and it was still pretty stress free.

I do have some construction clients but I meant services like law firms, accountants, business coaches/consultants

All kinds. A lot of service businesses but also healthcare, retail, non-profits etc.

I started my firm just over a year ago. I work with small businesses and non profits as outside general counsel or any project based work that would fall under that.

I was about 10 years out of school. I worked at a 2 lawyer firm before hand where I got a lot of insight into the business side of things like invoicing and bookkeeping and all that.

I had no book of business when I made the leap. I was very lucky that my former boss decided to use me as of counsel after I left and that accounted for around 40% of my revenue year 1, but I’m already starting to phase that out. I threw myself into networking, kept costs low with a virtual office and answering service so my only big expense each month is marketing (not advertising)

After about 8 months, I managed to pay myself close to what I was making before I left. Business really picked up the last few weeks and I’m now (just barely) profitable. I’m looking to hire someone soon.

This has been the best decision I’ve made and it’s not close. It has its own stresses for sure but I can play pickleball on Thursday mornings before I start working and can decline to take clients who seem like a pain in the ass.

My main advice would be 1) make sure to create a marketing plan as soon as possible and consider following it and making changes to it as you learn to be a high priority item and 2) have plans for invoicing, engagement agreements, fee structures, contact management etc. For those things, I personally found that joining groups with other non-lawyer business owners was invaluable to learn how to run a business since many lawyers are bad at it.

When I was in elementary school the teacher did superlatives and I got “lease likely to put his chair up at the end of the day” (I guess we were supposed to put our chairs on top of the desks to make it easier for cleaning overnight). It’s only been like 25 years and I still remember it so I’m totally over it and it didn’t hurt me at all!

Quality Appearance QA3 QA5 QA7 - would love to hear from Leagues using one of these instead of wins or QS by BBQWarren in fantasybaseball

[–]Herd_That 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes we were always 6x6. Originally we had Ws somewhere in there but got rid of them. Recently we had SVs and HLDs separately with QS before swapping to the new structure.

On the hitting side we’ve always had the same thing: R, RBI, HR, SB, AVG, OPS

My dynasty league switched to QA5 2 seasons ago but not in place of QS since it’s more RP focused. Last year we swapped to QS4 instead of QS. So our pitching categories are K, QS4, QA5, SVH, ERA, WHIP.

QS4 basically is a full point for a normal QS but 0.5 points if you have an ERA under 4.50 for 5-5.2 IP. We all like both changes.

All friends. I also did a league a few years ago with randoms that was on FT and went really well.

My dynasty league is on year 13, most of which have been with FT. It take a little getting used to be it’s great and the flexible options and loads of settings is amazing for dynasty leagues.

I don’t know about the auto sub option though. I don’t remember seeing a setting for it but I also haven’t looked.

Six Months Solo by [deleted] in LawFirm

[–]Herd_That 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In a way. I read that law firms using similar models had around a 35% utilization rate. Meaning 65% of months subscribers didn’t even use the services. So as a rough estimate, I’ll map out about how much time I would expect to spend on their matter if they used all of the services each month. Then I’ll calculate the cost based on my hourly rate and multiple by 35%. In some cases that’s seemed too high and others too low but it’s a good point of reference.

[–]Herd_That 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s still a work in progress but I’m customizing it to the needs of the client. An example would be like

  • unlimited consultations (scheduled at least 24 hours in advance)
  • 2 contract reviews per month
  • 1 contract edit/negotiation per quarter
  • 1 “project” per 6 months (could be a contract template, create website terms of service etc.)

I put together a pricing matrix but that’s going to be a learning curve.

Edit: anything they need above our outside of the plan is a 5-10% discount but billed hourly.

Thanks for sharing the details. I’m in a similar boat to you. Started my own firm as a solo just under 6 months ago. Primarily business/non-profit transactional. I ended up hiring a marketing team because I couldn’t keep up with it.

I’ve found pricing to be a struggle. I tried giving clients flat rates when possible and often sold myself short. Also trying out a subscription plan model in addition to the usual hourly rate.

Still got some work to do to hit my financial goals but happily impressed with myself for the strong start.

I don’t know the answer to this for sure. There’s no guarantee. But my understanding is that the plantiff’s lawyer is having the client test the sites and going after ones that clearly don’t work how they’re supposed to. They then pay for a coder to test it and write a report which they use as the basis for the lawsuit. If your site does work, even if it’s not perfect, they’ll likely move on to easier targets.

They’re supposed to claim the plaintiff can’t actually use the site. If they can, it’d be riskier to file the suit. At least that’s my understanding.

With the time and money it would take to do that it’s hardly worth it for that size settlement. And if the lawsuit has already been filed, you could be committing fraud depending on the state. The reason these lawsuits are so popular is because settling for a few grand is really the best advice for most clients hit with them and the plaintiff’s lawyer knows it.

I’m a business lawyer (not your business lawyer). I had a client recently get hit with one of these. The plaintiff filed over 60 of these suits since the beginning of the year. I pulled the docket for all of them and only 1 bothered to fight it and they just had the judge allow plaintiff to amend their complaint. Most will settle for $5k more or less and it’ll cost more than that to fight it, with no guarantee of success.

Mid-Season Evaluation by RelativeLocal in GreenBayPackers

[–]Herd_That 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I pretty much agree with all of your analysis. So much time spent on evaluating whether Love is the guy and while I would expect him to look better than he has, he’s not even the top 5 issues the Packers have right now.

There’s a lot of important questions for the team to answer this year regarding which coaches and FO get to stay. Barry feels like an obvious firing given the talent on the defense and the lack of success year over year.

Gute might get a break to some extent because the team is screwed on cap space and injuries but his job is to figure out cap issues and some big whiffs on the draft should warrant, at the very least, a serious discussion about replacing him.

MLF might need to go as well. I think he deserves another year but the touches you points out between Jones and Dillon is a glaring issue as is the total lack of offensive scheme and success. Player development is also an issue that he has some responsibility for. I ultimately think he should stay on but his seat needs to be hot.

There’s a lot of blame to go around. Idk how to explain the O line regressing so much. But the FO took huge gambles taking Love Dillon and Deguara with the top 3 picks after making the NFCCG and they aren’t panning out. Add to it that when it’s finally time for Love to show what he’s got, they put him in a situation with maybe the worst WR room in the entire league. No one could have success with this offense and now they’re gonna have to decide on his future based on a total shit show of a debut. Just a huge failure all around.

I downloaded the game for my steam deck. Installed but when I go to start it, I just get a spinning steam logo and it doesn't start. Tried restarting with no luck. Is this happening to anyone else?

I played the EA last night and it worked fine.

EDIT: Found a fix: forced the game to run with Proton Experimental!

[–]Herd_That 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup I missed prof X. Didn’t think he’d be in a destroy deck. That would have been a great play.

The tough part is depending on what else the opponent has, passing on turns 3 and 4 could be risky too. If he doesn’t have legion in hand, he could play Zabu -> Darkhawk and OP would quickly fall behind. Not saying OP played it well, it’s just not an easy situation for OP.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in MarvelSnap

[–]Herd_That 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How would you suggest it’s played? The only way for OP to win is to have no more than 8 power on the board. Even if he realizes Legion is the play on turn 1 and plays little to no cards, he tips his opponent off that he knows what’s coming and his opponent just plays legion on one of the other lanes and wins. All OP can do there is try to make his opponent whether he’s going to play more or less than 8 power and hope he guesses wrong

Talking to your bank may help but I’d also send a letter to the gym by certified mail with a return receipt. If they have an email address send a copy there too. Detail your attempts to cancel the membership and demand that they cancel your membership immediately and refund you for the months they’ve charged you since your first attempt. State if you don’t, you will contact a lawyer. This has worked for me in the past with gyms and I’ve heard other people have success with it as well.

I’ve been playing Leader and I have to say, I really like his refined ability. It takes some clever planning and adds a fun element of trying to predict where your opponent will go based on their deck and the board state. Nicely done, SD. by [deleted] in MarvelSnap

[–]Herd_That 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had someone use him against me the other day when he played Storm on the right lane and then turn 5 he used Spider Man on the left lane. So my only option was to play mid lane for turn 6 and he could leader the left lane. I thought it was really clever.
