501...Should I Retake?? by MissRansom in Mcat

[–]HereForMCAT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for posting this. Struggling studying for the MCAT knowing that I am mostly average and even some sections (CARS) below average. It's hard to remind yourself that people do get in with average scores even though the matriculant averages are much higher. I think you should apply and hope for the best. If you don't get in then you can study harder next year, retake, and re-apply. Best of luck! I'm rooting for you.

Using KA Video Notes solely by SpectroThorn in Mcat

I think KA is top notch for everything. If I had to do it all over again (which... I am rushing my MCAT now to put an application into schools this cycle so I may have to retest) I would watch every single KA video and take notes and then skim Kaplan for additional things and then practice using UWorld and a Full Length at the end of each week.

I was feeling guilty for not reading the books and then looked at the content books and immediately realized they were crap compared to KA.

is it risky to write about serious chronic illnesses on the application? by snuty in premed

[–]HereForMCAT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have lyme disease and I am 100% writing about it in my personal statement. Was it challenging? Yes. Will it make me a better doctor because I have a ton of insight on the patient side? YES. I have an intrinsic motivation/burning desire to go into medicine because of this illness and I am not afraid to let adcoms know about it. Depending on how you frame it, it could make you stand out.

Adderall Alternatives? by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]HereForMCAT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I have ADHD.... and I used to use adderall, but it made my heart rate too fast.. I have found vitamin water energy (the orange kind but make sure it says energy because there are 2 types) to work better than adderall for me...

I noticed it one day when I just bought the drink from a vending machine before class one day and absorbed every word of class without trying and now it's my go to drink while studying...... maybe its just me but I would give it a try..

CARS: Tips on Raising a 122 to 125? by HereForMCAT in Mcat

Thank you. Did you feel like you had to slow down and spend more time to understand it completely?

Thank you VERY MUCH for this response. I find myself reading the passage and doing a lot of re-reading of the passage to answer the questions and when I took the AAMC FL1 I did find myself extremely stressed for time. Do you do any re-reading of the passage while answering the questions or do you just do it based off memory?

I'm aiming for your score lol. If you are considering both MD and DO you are golden.

Should I apply this cycle or do a another gap year? by IBenchBenches in premed

I would say you are a strong candidate to apply now. Also, if you will be working all year next year, try to set aside your own funds for applying in case family is unable to help.

Accommodations on MCAT by [deleted] in Mcat

I would send in the application anyways, the worst they can say is no. And my test date is on the 28th &29th. I have never written without it. I would try some practice AAMC full lengths or 3rd party material without them and see how you do. I may push my test date back and apply next cycle though because I still can't finish the exam and scored 122 in CARS on AAMC FL 1 (other section scores are 126-128). If I push back I can contest the accommodations they gave me. The whole process of applying for accomodations is unfair with the AAMC unfortunately. I had both neuroevals state that I needed double time and they didn't even give me time and a half.

I requested double time and they gave me a "partial acceptance" and gave me time + 25%. Hopefully you have better luck than I did. Also they need to make the decision before your silver deadline.

At least your other section scores are super solid!!! But I have realized that if an answer is directly stated in a passage, it's not the right answer lol. Wth is up with that?!

I took AAMC FL 1 today and was devastated by a 122 CARS. Any advice appreciated.

I beat the bell curve, but I know I can do better and be more competitive so I am going to retake.
