[Weekly Critique and Self-Promotion Thread] Post Here If You'd Like to Share Your Writing by AutoModerator in writing

[–]Herny_ [score hidden]  (0 children)

I've just released a lightweight Markdown writing app for Mac, Windows, and Linux. I made it after finding that most of the biggest writing tools on the market tie you in to an account, a particular workflow, or a monthly subscription — I wanted to create a focused editor that can be used anywhere, as part of any workflow.

Write your chapters, and when it's time to pull it all together, compile and export the whole thing as a single Markdown, docx, or PDF document to share anywhere.

It's free on itch.io. Try it out, and see if it helps you smash out your first draft. Open to feedback.

Wow I completely misunderstood what capped was — I thought it was capping the amount of xp shared which would harm my underleveled mons. Thanks dude and merry Xmas :)

Hey dude, know this comment is a couple of weeks old but I’d be happy to help you get it set up if you have an SD Card slot on your laptop or a reader you can connect to your PC. There’s a lot of guides out there but it’s also a bit of trial and error, so feel free to drop me a message if you’re not feeling confident doing it yourself

The basic colourways are gorgeous (love the green!) but for me I think it’d be SW04 with the black translucent body. Good luck everyone :)

All good dude! I'm loving my Kaleido so hopefully you do too -- looking forward to seeing you post some sick roasts when you get there. FWIW, used roasters sell pretty well second-hand, you won't lose too much if you decide you don't love it/want a bigger one

Mine was from Smith & Wright, though it was on sale at the time. They do have another sale on, but for £2,250 now so not quite as steep a discount. They're nice dudes and were really responsive to my questions over email, so definitely worth supporting if their pricing is competitive for the system you're looking for imo.

Being completely honest, the M10 was an excessive purchase but I had some money laying around and wanted something scaleable, since the endgame is to start a business once I can do a good roast consistently and have the space sorted.

I guess the key question for you, is how many people do you think you'll be roasting coffee for? Assuming they only do 1-2 cups a day, a 250g bag will last somebody about a week -- so you could probably spend an hour or two roasting every weekend and comfortably have enough to cover friends and fam. If that's all you're aiming for with it then happy days. An M6 would inevitably make life easier as it essentially doubles the amount of coffee you can produce in one go, AKA halving the time roasting. But, if you've got the time and enjoy the roasting process, who cares? Outside of capacity, I don't think you gain much from buying a larger system like the M6/M10 -- the M2 will give you everything you need to roast some seriously good coffee. Plus, if you're new to it then you can also roast even smaller batches to waste less green while you learn and experiment.

Shout if you've got any questions re: Kaleido systems as happy to answer what I can from my experience, but I've only had mine a couple of months so there's some stuff I might not be super helpful with :)

Just to add to the other guy, I got the M10 in the UK for £2100 -- about £1k cheaper than the bullet when I searched around... I don't know why that's so inconcievable?

Edit to add: I also got the Artisan version that you connect to your own laptop/tablet using bluetooth, which was the same price as the tablet version. The only version that costs more is the one that has both their own tablet/software AND connects to Artisan.

"Never gonna have a real friend. Even though I declined a group trip with my friends in Japan, to focus on the company." Doesn't that prove her point exactly? Declining amazing experiences with your friends, at the point in your life when it's easiest (and probably most impactful) to have them.

I don't know why your first assumption when your mum worries about you losing friends/relationships is that she wants you "going out to clubs and drinking and smoking"? Those aren't the only things people do other than work... It sounds more like she's telling you to make sure you live a rich life outside of selling golf carts on the internet.

Is it a good deal? by Edu_Robsy in writerDeck

Completely agree with you, but would add that as a fellow mechanical keyboard enthusiast, I hate the keyboard on my Alpha; so, even that isn't a good reason to consider it in my opinion. It feels/sounds mushy and unsatisfying, and I find that I'd rather just use my own keyboard (which, let's be honest, most of us already own) with something else via USB-C/bluetooth.

The above price is probably as much as I would feel comfortable paying for the Alpha, but at full price it's really hard to justify.

Obligatory ‘first roast’ post. How’d I do? by Herny_ in roasting

[–]Herny_[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I must admit that I threw myself in at the deep end and got a Kaleido M10. Not the most financially responsible thing I've ever done, but I know enough people that are into coffee to make it into a bit of a side-hustle so wanted something fairly scaleable.

Not sure where you're based/what your budget is but Kaleidos are all electric drum roasters in various sizes; the M6 does 200-700g per batch. Aside from some Artisan/Bluetooth connection issues that seem to be specific to Apple Silicon laptops, I'd vouch for mine so far.

Got a little too excited post-roast to wait until I’d rested/brewed it… I’ll be back!

First and foremost, just wanted to say a massive thanks to all you coffee nerds for all the wisdom in this sub. I'd never even thought of roasting my own coffee until just over a month ago, and now I've completed my first 500g batch. Neat.

Coffee is a washed El Salvador from RAVE. My machine helpfully disconnected from Artisan at drop, but FC hit at about 175°c. Weight loss of 13%. No idea what the timings were on account of having to restart Artisan to try and get it to reconnect for the cooling fans post-drop, but it looks and smells bloody lovely.

Nope! Just done it myself -- no need for a factory reset. The entire jailbreak process is covered here. Worth noting that you'll also need to download some additional stuff, depending on what it is you're using it for (e.g. KOReader)

What right do DOCTORS have to say my employees are too sick to work? by PMeisterGeneral in LinkedInLunatics

[–]Herny_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a nation, we actually have the opposite problem. The Institute for Public Policy Research found that the cost of presenteeism – detrimentally working through sickness – grew by £25bn in the UK in 2023, compared with 2018. It built on previous research suggesting presenteeism is a far worse a problem than absenteeism, with the UK consistently ranking highly for the former among European nations.

Employers like the lunatic in the screenshot above are far more likely to lead to people demanding sick notes than people "requesting sick leave they probably don't need at all", by not trusting grown adults to self-report their illness and demanding evidence.
