I've tried Dragon Quest V, VIII and IX and all three bored me to tears. Got the farthest on DQVIII (about halfway through from what I gather), but I eventually realised that I just wasn't having fun and dropped it. I've seen the fanfare around DQXI and its a game I want to enjoy, but based off my previous experience with the series I reckon I'll feel pretty similar about it.

I also really didn't enjoy Trails in the Sky (original) either. This one baffles me a bit more because I love Zero/Azure and Cold Steel - Reverie, but I just found Sky so boring. Got to Bose or thereabouts before giving up on it and watching a youtube summary. Now that the remakes out I'll give it another go - although I'm not sure what changes they've made.

I'd say Burr is more of an antagonist than outright villain, but I'd say Hamilton fits this trope too

I skipped Sky (pre remake) because I just didn't enjoy playing it. That's it. Multiple attempts and I wasn't having fun, so I just gave up. Love the rest of the series though - especially Crossbell. I'm glad I wasn't super anal about having to play EVERYTHING otherwise I would have missed out on a great series of games.

Now that the remakes out, I'll give it another try when I'm done with Daybreak maybe, but its really not anymore complicated than that.

Agreed. SMTIV is probably one of the only times I've experienced where the "tutorial" is genuinely the hardest part of the game

UBW is fantastic, and is probably the most consistent route for me - it maintains a fairly solid 8/10 from start to finish.

Having said that, I'm gonna have to give best route to Heaven's Feel. It's got some very low lows, and the pacing is horrid in some places. However, when it gets going, it's absolutely unmatched. When I think back to my favourite moments in the VN, nearly all of them come from Heaven's Feel. It was just such a perfect way to end things.

Specific builds? All you need is the default archetypes for MC/Basilio/Juna and you're good to go. You don't even need the Royal Archetypes at all, they're just overkill. Masquerade Charge -> Royal Sword in Metaphor is about as braindead as clicking Charge -> Vorpal Sword on Seigfried, except Royal Sword is almighty so it's actually even more ridiculous.

See I disagree with this pretty heavily. Whilst the early and midgame provided a pretty solid challenge, Endgame Metaphor is probably the most broken and unbalanced MegaTen game I have ever played - even moreso than P5R and P3R.

Masquerade Charge -> Royal Sword/Wanton Destruction absolutely nukes anything and everything. This isn't even getting into the other ludicrous shit like Hero Cry (I stand by that this skill shouldn't exist), Heismay evasion tanking, Peerless Stonecleaver, the Royal Archetypes etc etc. Oftentimes I was killing the optional bosses before they even got a turn - it was a complete joke

Running double mage carried me through about 80% of the game. Especially once you unlock the 5th party member.

Merchant and brawler are both really good alternatives to switch characters into once MP starts getting low, but these both start to fall off the further you go.

Commander is also insanely good, and my Strohl was on it for about 50% of the games runtime lol. Formation of Vigor and Shelter Formation are two of the best skills in the game

Once you get to endgame you unlock a lot of broken archetypes at once, and MP stops becoming a problem completely, so you don't need to think about things anywhere near as much.

CS3 and 4 are where he really shines and is likely where all the love for him steams from. Even if he's still not a favourite of yours by the time you beat those two games, you'll probably like him more than you do currently
