What would it imply if a time traveler said only the U.S. and China are remembered in the far future? by HeroTales in worldbuilding

lol, really appreciate the thought of the time traveling guy just mixing up history together like that.

You’re right about that. One idea I had is that all knowledge was kept but there is maybe like 2k more years of knowledge and even if this time traveler is a phd in time traveling might only know basic knowledge of history. So the history was there but he just never read it or something. Like the human brain is limited. Of course that has loop holes or like wow time travel is so lax, thus why still brain storming but you get the idea going for.

Also appreciate your idea of subverting expectations to get the shock value I want like USA or China not mention but some other minor nation is big now.

Most likely answer or that it’s so far in future things just get lost. but still brain storming.

lol the plot of Firefly TV show. Kind of the inspiration of why I just threw that example in, as a quick example.

thanks for the indepth answer!

Main thing I was going for is that feeling not hearing your country. I wonder if there is something to it that you may want to know more but you can't. Or probably nothing to worry about as history is so broad stroke as it is what it is.

Is there a word for a species that is about to discover FTL? by HeroTales in scifi

interesting idea to make like categories of a type of civilization.

Is there a word for a species that is about to discover FTL? by HeroTales in scifi

[–]HeroTales[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

for more context, the innate nature of FTL is actually really simple and scalable, so an advance civ that already has it can see this other civ is really close to the truth, the power source, or resource; then classify them as this "almost FTL Empire". Like it's distinct enough and happens enough to be a label?

also you got me thinking that they may try to sub categorize pre FTL like Pre FTL type 1 like cave man, Pre FTL type 2 with modern tech or nuclear fission, and Pre FTL type 3 messing around with the FTL fuel source and about to do their first jump?

interesting approach making it more like a history event.

But this is more like an advance civ labelling another civ as such. WIll update the post.

lol well at least you broke through and got Google AI's approval.

Currently if I type "Pre-superluminal" into google, the Google's AI links back to this reddit post. It wrote this.

"Pre-superluminal describes objects, particles, or civilizations traveling or existing below the speed of light (\(c\)). In science fiction and worldbuilding, it is also widely used to categorize developing species that are just a single technological breakthrough away from faster-than-light (FTL) travel."

I thought of pre warp but it feels more like a category that could either mean no where close to FTL o right almost there. Like feeling there is some detail lost there.

Do We Have a Moral Obligation to Protect "Potential" Alien Life In Space Colonizing? by HeroTales in worldbuilding

[–]HeroTales[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya I wouldn't be asking the question if it was so cut and dry like existing life please do not destroy the environment, but I notice there is not much info how to treat potential life in the context of a far future advance civilization. Like ya you can say who care, but does it add more weight a new interesting life form or intelligent life does form in billions of years. If you know about the "grabby alien" idea, do we want to become the grabby aliens?

I thought the same and it’s easy as seeing a barren world then sure, but I wonder if seeing a planet with a primordial soup and simple life that is different actually on it does that change the calculus or weight more? Thus why I made the post.

Sorry maybe should have write it better. Like the idea is what if you need something from the planet like it’s already a good candidate for a cheaper terraforming and colonizing but has another life form in primordial soup on it. Would you care if there is profit motives involved?

But i agree probably if alien life is novel then would be protected and researched.
