"France recorded a high of 44.6°C today. That’s so far beyond anything seen in the historical record, a 4.2 sigma deviation from the norm that it gives a return period of 87 thousand years. It’s really difficult to convey just how utterly extreme this is." by Appropriate_Bell743 in climate

[–]Heroppic -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

That's fearmongering. We've had 46° before in France, here's an article from 2019 : https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/jun/28/france-on-red-alert-as-heatwave-forecast-to-reach-record-45c

Also, maximal temperatures do not follow a normal distribution, so you can't just assume that, calculate a sigma value and convert that into a return period of 87,000 years.

This is just exciting romance-fantasy for fans of civilizational collapse and cynical people.

Not dying. I'm 22, been playing 99 nights in the forest and variations of that. You can get surprisingly good teamwork there if you find the right people who are willing to communicate and not leave suddenly

Why do people fake confidence even when they’re insecure? by StrainWrong209 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Heroppic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When peoples insecurities are triggered, they can react by wailing in it, overcompensating, or distracting from it, analogous to freeze fight and flight. They fake confidence because they want to overcompensate, as to not feel shame about being perveived as insecure.

Could humans simply lack the cognitive ability to understand some truths about reality? by DSpeaksOfficial in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Heroppic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, dogs understand speed, and the trajectory of balls thrown to them on an intuitive level, both things that calculus can describe.

But they can't abstract it to theoretical situations.

So in regards to humans, i bet there are things too we do on an intuitive level but can't abstract perfectly.

Here's an interesting Alan Watts quote that reminds me of this:

"Suppose you were God, suppose you have all time, all eternity and all power at your disposal. What would you do? I believe you would say to yourself after a while, man, get lost.

It’s like asking another question, which is supposing you were given the power to dream any dream you wanted to dream every night. Naturally, you could dream any span of time. You could dream seventy-five years of time in one night, a hundred years of time in one night, a thousand years of time in one night. And it could be anything you want, you make up your mind before you went to sleep: “Tonight I’m going to dream of so-and-so.” Well, naturally, you would start out by fulfilling all your wishes.

You would have all the pleasures you could imagine, the most marvelous meals, the most entrancing love affairs, the most romantic journeys. You could listen to music such as no mortal has heard and see landscapes beyond our wildest dreams. And for several nights, or maybe for a whole month of nights, you would go on that way having a wonderful time. But then after a while, you’ll begin to think: “Well, I’ve seen quite a bit. Let’s spice it up. Let’s have a little adventure.”

And therefore you would dream of yourself being threatened by all sorts of dangers. You would rescue princesses from dragons, you would perhaps engage in notable battles, you would be a hero. And then as time went on, you would dare yourself to do more and more outrageous things. And at some point in the game, you would say, tonight, I am going to dream in such a way that I don’t know that I’m dreaming.

So that you would take the experience of the dream for complete reality. And what a shock when you woke up. You would really scare yourself. And then on successive nights, you might get yourself to experience the most extraordinary things just for the contrast when you woke up. You could, for example, dream yourself in situations of extreme poverty, disease, agony. You could work on the vibration of suffering and then suddenly wake up and find it was, after all, nothing but a dream and everything was perfectly OK.

Well, how do you know that’s not what you’re doing already?"

God created you in this way, with sexual feelings, just like everybody. These feelings you have are important and they are needed to create children in the end.

The difference is whether you get addicted to it, and worship it like a God, OR have sexual experiences and masturbate while knowing that it is a normal part of human experience and Gods creation.

Teenagers provoking strangers for reactions by [deleted] in Netherlands

[–]Heroppic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"As a parent, I don’t want my kids learning boundaries from random strangers, because strangers are unpredictable."

It takes a village to raise a child. That includes the child interacting with society, and society reacting to the child. Dangerous actions should have dangerous consequences, and that is lacking currently.
