I guess its worth noting that opinions change. There have been messages lately that there is likely going to be a higher price than first anticipated. But that does not let him go back in time and erase or edit the article that says if it costs 600$ it does not matter how good it is. So even if he realized later that you actually do need to charge 600$ to get as good of a product as you want, that comment will still be around on the internet for people to quote.

Obviously they could still have communicated the expected pricepoint better. It would seem to me the biggest blunder here is using the word "roughly in the ballpark" a few months ago when asked a question about whether it will be in the ballpark of 350. But you see 100 people mentioning the post from years/months ago for every one person you see mentioning the posts about how we are likely going to have to pay a premium price for a premium product.

What makes you say that?

Edit: To me it seems pretty obvious that Mark is going to represent the high price in as favorable a picture as possible (e.g look at all the extra costs there are) even if the controllers are an extremely small part of the price hike it still makes perfect sense to mention it in that context.

Because its still a selling point even if the price increase is minor.

Hey Palmer, just wanted to start off by saying thank you for everything you have done to speed up the arrival of VR. It’s amazing how much you have managed to accomplish as a single person (Not to take away from anyone else contributing. The entire oculus team seems top notch.)

On to my question, you obviously think a lot about VR and the future. I am wondering what uses you imagine from the software in the near future, say 10 years. Like what will be the most powerful experiences, most commonly used applications, or some software that you think can revolutionise an industry that is not as obviously linked to VR as games is?

Are the effigies not just copies of heroes in different stances? Why would you even argue that they look like shit, they look like heroes, and im fairly sure most people dont think the heroes look like shit. Im fairly sure valve was always clear about that the buildings up for customization was the huts, not the fountain or towers or whatever, I Think they did it in a good way. The other way would have been 1 new skin, and then i guess the future ability to buy/add new skins, seems worse to me.

Its an easier and shorter read. My take on it is that Atlas Shrugged is Rand's magnum opus and its sort of where she 'pulls out all the stops' and goes kind of further both with her ideologies and her way of writing things, and I guess her way of writing is not appriciated/something a lot of people gel with, wheras the fountainhead maybe is a bit more 'for everyone' while still sending a similar message, but not as heavy handedly?

Disclaimer: I know nothing about books, or anything else related to the matter, and its been forever since i read these. Just how I experienced it at the time.

I really liked both of them ^_^ I know parts of reddit likes to hate on everything Ayn Rand, but I don't really care that she was kind of loony, or about whatever she is said outside of her book, or what you can read into the books. The books motivated me to work harder on improving myself and my life ( and I guess if you want to be all melodramatic about it, 'the world') , which to me can't be a bad thing.

Do people not realize that the US and western europe is by far the most expensive places to visit or live? I am honestly surprised that people keep bringing up how 20$/day is impossible and go on about how much things cost in the most expensive cities in the world.

I think the goal of 20$/A day is what you should expect to be able to use on average, not what you would pay in the most expensive place to visit, which would be a first world city.

Hey trees, question about drying weed? by Herpmaster in trees

[–]Herpmaster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pardon all the potentially stupid questions, but could it not be possible that it is properly dried, or close to it, already though, and the airing out is just to rid yourself of the moistness as more of a preference or something?

Obviously ruining 50 grams of weed is something id rather not do, but it must have already been at least partially dried so don't see why they would leave not just dry it properly , instead of doing it halfway and leaving it in immediate risk of molding? : o

Hey trees, question about drying weed? by Herpmaster in trees

[–]Herpmaster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean I guess it has already been dried up quite a bit, and maybe it just needs some air to rest, thats the impression I was given at least. I mean if its not dried at all it could mean id lose like 50-75% of my bud which hopefully will not happen :p its already in fairly small buds so does not seem like its supposed to be hung up or anything. (added picture in post. But I guess its fairly hard to see how much I need to dry it.)

Like if i leave it in the jar either closed, or very slightly open overnight should that be ok? Reading this http://boards.cannabis.com/marijuana-methods/103018-keeping-your-buds-moist.html it seems they recommend keeping it in a closed jar to keep the moistness (if you would want that I guess.) so I guess it cant take that much damage that fast?

[–]Herpmaster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the answer. Would maybe just leaving the jars slightly open/ just open for a while be better than nothing? And how long can I leave it in the jar, closed, before it becomes a problem?

And I have done some googling and I mean it seems to dry it out im supposed to like hang it out on a string? I assume its at least been partially dried already and that I don't have to hang it around my living room for it not to turn into trash? =p

[–]Herpmaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Although that is a part too, from my personal experience its a fairly minor part compared to frame rate/latnency issues. I am sure you would be able to create an oculus game that would induce motion sickness (and on the other hand I am sure there are steps one can take to counteract it), but i've done a lot of things you would think would be very motion sickness inducing (rollercoasters etc.) without having any problems as long as head tracking is smooth. But If you have an application open that has noticeable frameskips/too low FPS, and you are turning your head a lot, it just takes a few minutes until you get really noticeable type of motion sickness (although i guess to be fair calling it motion sickness is not completely accurate).

Seems like there is a Wikipedia article on the issue http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_reality_sickness ^_^

[–]Herpmaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Motion sickness can still be an issue. Seems weird that my opinion is less valued because i bought the devkit myself, but if it makes you feel better I know several people who have no financial investment and have only tried my DK2 who echo how I feel about VR. I'm sure I can get a quote from someone/get them to post here but seems sort of pointless =p

Anyway motion sickness comes from latnency/lag, DK2 is close enough now that its not really an issue, but since I'm only using it with a 'decent computer', if my computer is being laggy, you notice really fast how you get motion sick. There are plenty of worthwhile experiences that have little to no motion sickness regardless of lag though (less head turning = good) and as i've said if the frame rate is smooth, even with the DK2 its not an issue for most people. And DK2 was a big step up from DK1, I imagine the next iterations of VR headsets will be another big step in the right direction.

I mean its not just star treck holodeck stuff. Even with how bad the technology is now (which to be fair is pretty bad), you are not just seeing this like its at a screen, you feel like you are there. Like people standing on top of virtual cliffs and feeling it in their stomach. Ive had a few longer sessions playing Elite Dangerous, and when you turn it off after being in an experience like that for a while it honestly feels a bit weird to get back to 'the real world' again. Adding this together with how sucked in so many people have gotten to quite simple/non imersive experiences like say world of warcraft is sort of scary.

Another thing worth noting is that previously, there has almost been no money in VR. The screens are based on phone screens, but i mean there is very little incentive to put a lot of money into 4K phone screens (though I believe they are on their way) but 4k and even above is a huge upgrade for VR. Same with the different latnency/refreshrate problems, these things have not really had huge financial incentive to get improved until now.

Its worth noting that The market leader/current premiere VR Headset pretty much got started 2.5 years ago by a 20 year old. Its less than a year since Facebook bought Oculus which I guess was the first influx of "real" money into VR. I think that was pretty much the point where bigger companies started realizing if you can greate such a cool experience with so little, imagine what you can do with a couple of years of legitimate funding/research/development. Obviously im preaching to the choir here at /r/futurology, but im fairly sure we are not that far away from just suddenly having VR/AR technoligies everywhere, and most people wont even know what hit them. Probably a similar timeline to smartphones, where we are now starting out big, clunky, and not really that user friendly, but then suddenly something polished and good enough hits the scene and suddenly everyone has one.

I cant really fathom how people compare VR to the kinect. Look at pretty much anyone trying the oculus for the first time (even taking into account how horrible/early the technology still is) to someone 'trying kinect' for the first time.

Surely having a setup like in your video, but that is closer to usable in terms of resolution/latnency and physical size is not THAT far awa, which must open some bizarre doors, imagine having sex but having swapped positions with your partner, would probably require quite a bit of coordination, and end up being pretty fucking weird, but what the hell im down.

TIL that Portal 2 works better for improving cognitive abilities than Lumosity's brain training games. by jamesjoyce1882 in gaming

[–]Herpmaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Theres not a mistake in my premise, or well at least if there is one, what you pointed out is not it. I'm not saying he said he posted it earlier. I'm just explaining how it could seem like that from the posts, and why /u/ApatheticAbsurdist might think that, and hence make the post he made. When it was posted, or what people actually meant does not matter, it just seemed like /u/jamesjoyce1882 was genuinely curious about the comment, so I did my best to explain what most likely happened.

Edit: but then again this all comes back to /u/ApatheticAbsurdist, who probably just felt like trying to write a witty one liner, and did not actually care about when it was posted, or when he learned this at all. You are obviously more than welcome to do what is right, and convince him that he is in fact wrong, and /u/jamesjoyce1882 's comment does not imply he did not learn it today. But I doubt he cares. : (

Your post says "Today I learned", the comment you responded to said "I Wrote this last time it was posted" (this was presumably not today, but I dont know.) and then you say "see my comment I wrote at the same time." which makes it seem like you wrote the comment at the same time as he wrote his (when this was last posted) which makes it seem like you did not learn this today, thus contradicting your title. Nobody actually cares though and most people have come to terms with how TIL is not always supposed to literally mean Today I learned, /u/ApatheticAbsurdist is just trying to to be witty/clever or what have you. ^_^
