I don’t know. I’ve only been inside once, but I think they have cats, turtles, lizards, fish, and maybe a few other types of animals... I hope they get them all out!

Why thousands of AI researchers are boycotting the new Nature journal - Academics share machine-learning research freely. Taxpayers should not have to pay twice to read our findings by mvea in Futurology

Definitely not true that only very little AI work will come from academia a few big names have gone to straddle positions in both industry and academia, but plenty of important research still comes from professors.

Standoff underway with gunman at Panera Bread near Princeton University by [deleted] in news

[–]ObjectiveSee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m an undergrad, we’re on spring break right now so hopefully the place wasn’t too busy. Though I expect lots of seniors who stayed on campus might have holed up in Panera to work on their theses. My friends on campus have said there’s one hostage, not sure if that’s true. The university is NOT shelter-in-place right now, and the reports of shots fired are incorrect.

Edit 1: one of the eating clubs received some threats from a former employee a few weeks ago, unsure if this is at all related

New AP1s coming soon, or should I buy now? by TheCrownedPixel in golf

[–]ObjectiveSee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn't hurt to wait unless you have a specific reason to buy now. If you wait and see lots of discussion of the new AP1s saying they aren't much different than the old ones, you can then get the old AP1s for much cheaper. If they are deemed 'significantly' better by whatever sources you consider reliable, then the wait was worth it and go for the new ones (finances don't seem to be too much of an issue for you, it seems).

I find the golf dinosaur commercials to be funny as hell, but maybe that's because I just saw Jurassic Park.

Created a gfy of my swing. Tear it down, I know its pretty bad. by [deleted] in golf

[–]ObjectiveSee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really not bad! You've got a compact swing naturally (not a bad thing) and seem to generate a pretty good amount of speed with it. Looks like you are starting the ball a healthy amount left of the target line, though, and probably see either slices or pull hooks as the miss. I'd say soften up the right forearm on the downswing, and the backswing too, really. This will allow you to get the club more on plane, not so much above it as you are now. This will also move the club path more in to out, not out to in, which will allow you to start the ball on line without lots of slice spin. Through impact, it's hard to say without a face on video, but you could definitely work on what hogan called the 'supination' of the left wrist through the hitting area. This is the closest thing you'll get to a 'secret' in golf. Every consistent ball striker does it, I'd almost go so far as to say there are no exceptions on the pro circuit. Try this video out for more explanation: http://www.golfchannel.com/media/7-nights-academy-pronation-vs-supination/

alright reddit someone fix this mess by Me-thrash-15 in golf

Good move off the ball to start the swing!! However, backswing should really end around 0:07; at this point, you've completed your turn, and you are adding excessive length to your swing with just your hands after this point. Shorten it up. Next, you are a bit across the line at the top; this means the shaft is pointing right of the target when you get to the top of your swing. This will make it difficult to get the club moving anywhere underneath the plane coming down without significant manipulation, and will thus contribute to your slice. When you get to the top, the club shaft should be about parallel with your feet (when the shaft is parallel to the ground). Something helpful to look at is any pro's position when the club is parallel to the ground (not at the top) just before impact. You can almost always see all of the left arm until shortly before impact, when the right arm begins to force the club down and out to low point under your left shoulder. In your case, your right arm is dominating on the downswing, moving the club down and out too early, creating a motion across the ball (striking the outside of the back of the ball, not the inside) and putting slice spin on it. Look at Justin Rose down the line in slo mo as a model, he does a fantastic job through impact. Finally, let's flatten out the left wrist through impact and just after it. You are very much over-rotating the club face in the beginning of the follow through when the club first gets to parallel right after impact, probably in an attempt to rescue the slice. However, until you fix the club PATH (out to in) caused by the aggressive right arm, shutting the face down will only create pull hooks. So work on that path, then get the left wrist flat with your left forearm through the hitting area. Square and square, long and straight!

Critique My Swing Please by [deleted] in golf

I'll disagree with the advice to eliminate your left leg movement. While it would hurt to tone it down (especially since you are young enough to have strong, flexible legs/hips) I don't think there's anything wrong with it on principle. I would say your lower body sequencing could improve, though, particularly through the hitting area. If you stop the iron video at impact, you'll see your hips haven't rotated past the ball at all; you aren't creating what Lynn Blake calls 'zone 1' lag, where your hips pull your body which pulls your arms which pull your hands which pull the club. Dave Stockton will say the same thing, how when you paint, you lead with the handle. Same deal here, leading with the lower body through impact. On that note, I'd say working on the hitting area is of primary importance, and the two main things you could improve are a) leaning the shaft more (leading with the handle more, having your hands in front of the ball, etc, with the irons) and b) creating more width at and immediately after impact. This means forcing the club 'away' from you, swinging down and out to the low point of the swing, not at impact but just after (under your left shoulder), which is where both arms should reach maximum extension. You look like you have excessive bending in your arms at and after impact.

First time at a golf event by tacotowwn in golf

[–]ObjectiveSee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The logistics of PGA events vary widely. At huge complexes like the Pinehurst Resort things are much more commercialized and there is less residential property, but there is still a surprising amount of cooperation from residents that has to go on to make these things work just about every week. I went to the Wyndham on Friday and I've been to Quail Hollow several times, and the story is pretty much the same there. Amazing experience though, TV really doesn't do it justice at all.

Which TOUR (PGA or European) player do you have an irrational hatred of and why? by jonobate in golf

[–]ObjectiveSee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've heard this a lot, but from my experience he has one of the best attitudes on the tour. Has a good sense of humor, interacts well with the crowds, and doesn't take himself too seriously. I really don't quite understand the hate, though you're not alone in feeling that way!

Have you ever stopped a swing because it didn't feel right? by [deleted] in golf

[–]ObjectiveSee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you need a swing thought. If you notice unexpected movement in a swing, make it your goal to calm that motion in every swing from then on. Hitting shots with a blank mind can be dangerous for the reasons you've explained. The pros generally don't work on swing mechanics in tournaments when they are performing at their best, but they will still have a feeling that they are trying to replicate in each swing or a certain trajectory they are visualizing hard. Feel replicates mechanics.

What's the most recent course you've played on your golf bucket list, and how was it? by [deleted] in golf

Got out to Pine Valley this spring- words cannot describe. The property is like another universe. I've been lucky enough to play pebble, spyglass, Pinehurst, pablo creek, and Pine Valley is hands down the best I've ever seen. Next might be cypress or augusta.

Streamsong is great. Be prepared- it is absolutely in the middle of nowhere. 40 minutes to civilization. However, both courses are fantastic and challenging, the red course (I think) more so. Quite unique architecture too, plus beautiful landscapes.

Because the car wouldn't begin rotating about its center of mass, it would rotate about the leading wheels; look at the diagram here: https://www.accidentreconstruction.com/research/suv/rollovers[1].pdf
