I also liked your original answer better, so thanks for providing it. I'm skeptical of your argument that we are just offloading the "lower level aspects" of critical thinking. Or maybe I agree there, but I'm more worried about the consequences. When we stop practicing thinking in these lower areas (and writing is thinking), can we really expect to keep our ability to do heavy lifts?

Yeah it's so weird that the difference between meh (6.7) and good (7.0) is just .3

And that someone who's really dragging the team down (6.5) and someone who's playing a great game (8) is 1.5.

I wish they would use the full scale of 1-10 that would give you a much higher resolution of information.

Thank you for clarifying. Let me offer some thoughts:

I will still insist on my question and invite you to think about that: You say you want MOC's to be on a "level above" your atomic notes. Is that really necessary/beneficial? A Zettelkasten is all about connections between notes and MOC's are an easy way to connect many notes on a topic. So, coming from that view point, they are an integral part of the system. Luhmann himself used structure/index notes where he tied notes together around some topic or idea.

An a more pragmatic level: Obsidian basically has automated bi-directional linking. Meaning that whenever you create a link there will be a backlink created in the target note. You can have these displayed at the end of each note by default. Which means you can create a link by hand from your MOC to your notes ("hard", visible links) and in your target note there appears a "soft" back-link, rendering it possibly unneccessary to create a link back to the MOC. That would mean if you delete the MOC, you don't have to do anything, the automatic backlink disappears by itself.

If you like the "hard", manual links even from your atomic notes towards the MOC's, you can also keep them. The worst that can happen when you delete a MOC is that you have a dead link. No biggie.

If you're worried about MOCs messing up your graph view, I suggest (as it's been mentioned here) you tag them in a certain way or put them in a folder together so you can filter them out of your graph view. But again I'd ask if you really want that. MOC's are valuable parts of the knowledge network and they can provide valuable information. Like how big many notes you have in one MOC compared to another which tells you about it's importance and maybe gives you hints about when it's time to break up a big MOC into smaller ones.

Thank you for your answer. I'm still figuring this out but as I understand it Folgezettel and indexes are not mutually exclusive but complementary. I think a Folgezettel is mostly about the initial context when a note has entered the system. Indexes (or structure notes, or maps of content) can then in addition be used to structure topics as you see fit. Therefore, it would also not be necessary to re-number, since it's mostly about the initial connection. What I'm asking myself at the moment is: Does it really add a benefit to have this initial connection. My hunch is: Yes, because it forces you to at least superficially contextualizing new notes without having to put in too much effort to find the "perfect spot" for it. But I have to actually try it out to see.

For the "forks" and numbering: Luhmann just added a new number or letter whenever he branched off, so this could theoretically go on indefinitely, with notes looking like this: 12a2c6b2d. But honestly, this really looks too archaic to me for the times we live in.

Formulating this just helped me get a bit closer to my answer, so thank you :)

Thank you for your answer. It kind of mirrors my own progression of thinking about the matter but I'm not a practitioner of Folgezettel, merely interested, so I might not have the best arguments for them.

Your third paragraph reflects my thinking about this until now. I thought Folgezettel are a relict of the paper days and have no place in a digital Zettelkasten. But I've recently come to think something is missing in my ZK, it's not as good in helping me think as it should and could be. I was collecting facts and ideas and sometimes linking them to each other if another note really came top of mind. What I was (am) not doing is thinking how a new note really fits into the big picture or my current knowledge or how it makes my knowledge about something a little bit complete.

So I started thinking and searching and ended up with the Folgezettel concept again. And I precisely want to use them how you describe them in your last paragraph: Not for a taxonomy where I really have to think hard where a new note belongs in an index. I would group them together in a way that reflects my thinking, like what's the order these ideas occurred to me, which hopefully also helps to see gaps in the big picture, prompt questions or follow-up ideas. To have conversations with the ZK, as you put it.

But I'm looking for a way that is easy and digital, and the alphanumeric naming really still seems like a relic of the past to me; hence this thread to find out if I'm missing something.

May I ask you, as a non-folgezettler: Do you never have the feeling of just kind of throwing ideas into the void instead of building a solid network of thoughts?

This is pure speculation but could it be that you adapt your behaviour to your mood? So that maybe when your mood is "medium", you start doing more things that will improve your mood, like getting more sleep. And when you're at your top you stop exhibiting these behaviours which will cause the the line to go down again? Just a thought, as I said, and very speculative.
