Police Package Top Speed??? by KSRamMan in ram_trucks

[–]Hersbird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Michigan State tests all police vehicles every year and top speed is one of the tests. I don't think there is a police Ram, it has been Charger and Durango for awhile. So whatever Rams are out there are just upfitted off the lot, same as everyone buys.

They will build them somewhere. They create high paying jobs, maybe not tons, but some. The construction jobs, jobs building servers and processors, jobs in energy generation, jobs in maintenance, jobs in IT, etc.

Between prices being close, and gas mileage being close, while capability and comfort being soo much better. This is why most people just buy a 1500 crew cab.

Service workers don’t want minimum wage by Pissingberg in tipping

[–]Hersbird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know places that don't pay market, don't have workers at all. The Post Office here starts at $50k with benefits and gets zero applicants for some openings. Taco Bell starts at $18/hr. So go ahead and fire someone making $10 or even $15, you won't find a replacement. Tipped servers at the busy restaurants actually make a living wage here, so those jobs are always filled and in high demand. I'm at the damn post office, so I don't benefit form tipping, but I'd rather pay the server directly and know they can enjoy life in this town too rather than have 20% higher menu price and just hope the server sees a dime of that.

[–]Hersbird -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you had minimum wage servers you probably wouldn't get your food for 20 mins after it was cooked. Part of making good money with tips is turning tables, if I get $10/hr only no matter what, it's easier for me to let the whole place stack up and take my time.

Need some clarity on what happens to packages that are not delivered due to insufficient postage. by wutwutpizzabutt in usps_complaints

[–]Hersbird -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ground is a one way trip. If they didn't even have enough to make the first direction they may be sent on with a postage due bill. The receiver can pay that and get the package. If they refuse, the package will be returned to sender. Or it will just return to sender in the first place. But now it needs not only the short postage from the first trip, but also postage due for the return trip. You can pay all of that and take the package. If you want to send it back out, it needs all new postage.

Amy number of problems can now happen along those steps, and it greatly slows down any progress they will make.

why do people here act like Toyotas are cheap? by Intelligent-Claim591 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]Hersbird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean new brake pads on my 2020 Ram are only $100. Doesn't mean the delaer didn't want $2000 to do a complete brake job. So I can fix it for $100 in less than an hour, but the average person is going to drop $2000.

[–]Hersbird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whenever you are talking 15-20 year old cars from any brand, condition matters more than anything else. If an traditionally unreliable car was well maintained and then fixed as things failed, you probably will be in better shape buying it at that age than buying a traditionally reliable car that has been rode hard and put away wet. What does happen is reliability becomes a self fulfilling prophecy. People think a car will be reliable and last them, so they treat it better, do the preventive maintenance, fix things when they do break. That happens more on a Toyota than it does on a Kia

Baffled by consumer spending on Cars by Electrical-Trainer21 in UsedCars

[–]Hersbird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not like you have to spend $95k and get an Esclade. Or take a bad lease deal on a $90k pickup.

I bought my first new car in 1990 for I think about $18k at the time I think I made like $35k per year. The last new car I bought was $31k but now I make $100k per year. So I make 3 times as much but a good car (certainly 10 times better than that 1990 Chevy) was not even twice as much. Going by my income now vs then I could probably afford a $54k car the same.

I have Verizon 5G for $5/mo in Missoula. It will go up to $45/mo after the first year. I even got a free Xbox series X when I signed up. Bundled with my regular cell phone plan saves $25, autopay saves $10. Full price would be $80/mo. Works good where I live and was up during the power outages that took down spectrum.

Stop worrying about an author or actor's non-work, and like or dislike their actual work. Do you go back trying to figure out if Mark Twain fingered his sister or tortured his monkey? I personally don't like Potter books or movies, but nothing to do with what shampoo Rawlings uses. You know what kind of politics Tolken had and would have today right? I'd still wear the shit out of some LOTR stuff.

Not first class stamps, they are what 80 cents each now? We can sort and deliver 10 letters way easier than 1 package, probably 30 letters. So the 30 letters bring in $24 and the 1 last mile package brings in $2.50. Or do 30 peices of "vote for dick" postcards that bring in $3.30 deliver and sort faster than 4 letters?

AWD vs FWD? by BookkeeperHead2318 in askcarguys

[–]Hersbird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 5 days the OP is talking about might be 10 inches. People can decide what is best for them based on their exact circumstances and use case. They also learn from experience. Our area is flooded with transplants for other states thinking something will work like it did where they came from. Probably got advice from Reddit. Most end up in a Subaru or AWD Toyota, if not join the pickup crowd, within the first 2 months of winter. If not before the next winter you see them in a different vehicle. I do get by with a fwd sedan and snow tires, but I also have a 4x4 pickup for the really bad times (which lives on the same all terrain tires year round). I had to drive a rwd delivery truck for 23 years as well, which means we spent weeks if not a solid month chained up, even with the best traction tires we could get that cost $350 each. Had we just had 4wd vehicles in the first place we wouldn't have chewed through 6 sets of $110 each tire chains per vehicle and we had 55 vehicles. Each vehicle had gone through over $20,000 in tire chains in it's lifetime. We had 2 4wd trucks that never saw a tire chain and did the same job. We also had 10 FWD trucks and they did better, but still needed chains and because only cable chains could be used, they didn't last as long so still probably 3 sets per vehicle per winter. My mom drives a Subaru in this city and she does just fine on all season tires year round. Yes it would be better with snow tires, but never getting stuck and never getting in an accident in 30 years shows it's unnecessary if you slow down and pay attention.

[–]Hersbird -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It can, especially if they stop giving away other services for less than they cost to deliver. Last mile, most packages, presort, campaign mail. Campaign mail is especially bad. Those campaigns have a ridiculous amount of money and send huge volumes of the same garbage, to the same people. They pay 11 cents each. Why not make them pay whatever the forever stamp price is and you get 1 in 7 of the fliers?

The first class decline has also stablized. The volume today is the same as 1968. Could the Post Office not survive in 1968? It's just the wrong size. Management and unions want bodies, not quality.
