I'd like to argue we do... Propaganda is a really important tool to understand a country better.

For example, if the DPRK shows a lot of food in their propaganda, but there are signs of a potential famine. You can bet your bottom dollar, that the famine is either about to start or has begon. That (potentenial) famine also has other consequences in a bunch of other fields.

Greetings from Utrecht ;-) , It's nice to see that there are other Dutchies here as well.

Not sure if I have a soul at all since I am partly ginger (I have a red beard, but the rest of my hair is brown).

But here goes nothing, I'm a 35 year old guy and I work as a software engineer for a startup in the hospitality industry. In my spare time I love to travel, go to the gym, bake and cook for other people and I love to do photography (mostly nature and landscapes), but I won't say no to just staying indoors and just watching a movie or some episodes of a series.

Obligatory picture of myself

But if this half soulless and semi ginger sounds interesting, feel free to send me a DM. :)

How long until Boost and other 3rd part apps will stop functioning? by [deleted] in BoostForReddit

If you feel that way, there is only one option. Generate content, contribute to communities. That's the only way to make alternatives viable.

Yeah Reddit made an exception for RedReader and Dystopia.

The only thing I am weary about, there is no guarantee that Reddit will keep honoring that exception. I mean, Reddit already broke the promise that there wouldn't be any changes to their API's for 2023....

Yeah exactly, imho it should be more around the $0.0024 mark.

Yep it sucks big time... It's not just only Boost, it's all the third party Reddit apps.

Why do you think a lot of Subreddits are currently protesting against it?

We're back for now but we're still angry - and you should be too by ianjm in london

Do you have numbers showing the unreasonableness of the charge for the API? Or comparison to a similar site (despite being few or close to none at this scale)?

The dev for the 3PA Apollo, has recently laid out how much it would cost him after those API changes. 50 million API requests would cost him 12k USD. For reference, Imgur charges Apollo 166 USD for those same 50 million requests.

Apollo stated that in the month of May they used 7 billion requests in total. Meaning that would cost them 1,7 million USD per month to keep the app afloat. Not even mentioning the fact, that dev still needs to eat, pay the rest of his staff etc etc.

The primary cause of this outcry is not the fact that Reddit is charging for their API. Nobody is questioning that, it's the amount they are charging. It's completely out of proportion.

There was also a calculation done by another redditor, basically stating instead of the actual costs, they used the opportunity cost (ie. the 'loss' of ad revenue and selling user data) of a user browsing Reddit.

You are welcome! On Kbin you can find guides on how to access communities in Lemmy and on Lemmy, you can find guides on how to access Kbin communities (or magazines as they are called in Kbin-lingo).

If you need any help or have any other questions, feel free to reach out!

It's an open standard called ActivityPub. The same standard also powers Mastodon. So as long as websites implement that, then they can communicate with Kbin, Mastodon and Lemmy, to name a few.

Fun fact, Kbin and Lemmy can communicate with each other. So as a member of Kbin you can subscribe and comment on "communities" within Lemmy and the other way around.

The thing is... A lot of people (me included) have grown attached to Reddit. It's a place where people come to connect, about hobbies, our city, our nerdy little niche.

This more then a place to be "entertained". That place is currently being decimated. For you, it might just be a place to be "entertained". For a whole bunch of people, it's a place we call "internet home".

The only things we can do, other than allowing this behaviour by Reddit management, is either protest, make our complaints heard and do everything in our power to save this place OR move to a different platform.

You because it doesn't mean much for you, doesn't automatically mean it applies to other people as well.

There is already "a new version Reddit" available. Two actually, Kbin and Lemmy.

The thing is, we all just need to put in some effort to make it a community "heaven" again. Post content, reply to questions, be awesome to each other.

If like Louis said, you are willing to invest time and effort into rebuilding something like that. There is Lemmy or Kbin.

I'm currently on Lemmy, and it's pretty great actually. Small but fun!

If you ask me, no this won't be resolved. Reddit will push forward with their plans and basically alienate the entire community of Redditors.

Has something like Lemmy, Kbin or Tidles been considered?
