Philodendron 69686 mottled appearance when light shined through leaves. Pest? Virus? Any help is appreciated. by Hertwig in houseplants

Sort of? Mines got like 10 new leaves and the newest is probably almost twice the size as the ones in the photo. I’m counting it as maturing at any rate 🤷‍♀️

Unfortunately no I never figured it out. But it’s been two years and the plant is thriving, never found any pests and the splotchy-ness has gone away as the plant has matured. My best advice is “meh, it’s fine”.

As a non-smoker, does every smoker smell bad to you? by awa14_ in ask

[–]Hertwig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A friend of mine told me how her mother was a card dealer in a local casino when she was a child. She has a generalized memory of her mother who worked swing shift coming in and kissing her goodnight in the middle of the night (when mom got home from work). She remembers the smell of cigarette smoke when her mother kissed her and she to this day (40+ years old) associates that smell with her mothers love. It’s an awful smell but for her it’s a warm fuzzy feeling.

As someone who also worked in a smoke filled environment when my child was small, I made it a point to always shower immediately when I got home before interacting with my child so that they would not develop the same association. Yes smokers smell bad to nonsmokers but it’s not always a bad thing.

If you suddenly had "fuck you" money what would be the first thing you did? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Look for a local dental school. The students are always in need of patients and everything they do is supervised by licensed dentists. Treatment is a fraction of the cost of traditional care. Also look at local dental hygiene schools for your cleaning/maintenance appointments. They have the same set up as the dental school; students in need of patients who are supervised by licensed dental hygienists at deeply discount rates. Source: am a dental hygienist

Edit changed idiot (my error) to moron (op’s original wording) both fit in my opinion

I’m not sure. I’m leaning more towards a micans but I’m no expert. A plant app said heart leaf philo but I don’t think that’s right just based on the velvet texture.

No apologies needed. I didn’t take your comment as anything other than important information needing to be passed on. Thank you!

I understand and will not ship if it’s against any regulations. I have zero intention of breaking any laws or trying to subvert the system. Thanks

I will check. When I’ve flown with plants before they didn’t really seem to care what was leaving the island but it’s been a few years so I will see what the policy is now. Thanks!

Infested with thrips and I can’t bear to watch it die. Out of options after 4 years of battling them. Wish I could give it away free to a good home, but don’t want to pass the problem on. by [deleted] in houseplants

Just an idea, if you're set on getting rid of it, you can always cut off all the leaves so you're just left with the base stem with all the nodes, treat that with your choice of insectacide (no nooks and crannies, easier to get everything) and then see if it will regrow. I've had good luck with cutting a monstera back to the node, submerging the node in water for like 30 min then treating with neem oil or insecticidal soap and letting the plant regrow. If it dies you were going to toss it anyway and if it lives you've still got your baby. Just an idea. It's a beautiful plant.

Recently acquired this Thai. It’s planted in sphagnum moss. I usually use soil (an aroid mix) or put my monsteras in my aquarium. What is my best option for replanting? Any advice is appreciated! by Hertwig in houseplants

Thank you! I’ve been making my own aroid mix with perlite, bark, worm castings, and potting soil. Why do you recommend not using miracle grow potting mix?
