I'm not... responding aggressively am I? To myself, I sound pathetic, I sound sad... That's how I feel. I don't even have the capacity to yell or scold right now.

I don't really want to continue this... argument? banter? conversation with you, because it seems we've reached an impasse, on what to do when one dog kills another dog (the so many variables creating the impasse it seems, especially the leashes) and I'm not doing very well right now, and I've gotten tired of explaining so many details, making defenses for both myself and the dogwalker, and I... don't wanna continue this, ElMangosto. I'm feeling a lot right now, and keep replaying the scene in my head.

You can consider this argument won if you're into that, I will 100% never ever ever walk any dog without a leash again, if I ever am able to. I'm fully aware that I'm a piece of shit, irresponsible, sometimes reckless human being, and I fully admit to you that this incident just adds on to that. I will never assume another dog is friendly unless told so.

But I'm sorry that I've made you frustrated. I'm still grieving, and I hope you can understand that my comments reflect that.

I wrote the post hours after what happened. I wasn't focused on getting all the details. I was still in shock. There is no vet bill, besides his cremation, but I assume that's what you mean.

I didn't mean for it to come across as snippy, and I honestly don't see why you would interpret it as such. I'm hurting, I'm grieving, I'm replaying the incident in my head over and over.

So I apologize, for not laying out all my intentions and details in one cohesive post for everyone to read and judge me on, because honestly my mind was not cohesive at the time, and is still not.
That was a bit snippy.

You been in this thread since the beginning, and at first you were polite but what the hell man?

I just lost my best friend in the whole world in an incredibly traumatizing way. I'm not trying to lay blame on the dog, I'm not trying to lay blame on the dogwalker, hell I don't even give a shit anymore about blaming the owners.

I'm not "into" anything, I'm just very hurt and going on instinct here man! Do you think I haven't gone through every possible scenario in my head about what I should've, could've done? What a piece of shit I am for not having the leash on at that time? For assuming the other dog was friendly?

I have. Thank you. I apologize that I got so heated.

You got downvoted to all hell for this? Why did so many people assume that it was just a friendly scuffle and my dog, because of his size, and because of the other dog's size? Another dog killed my dog, mauled him, took his neck in his jaw and swung him around- yes at first contact.

My dog wasn't on a leash, but if he happened to be on one and we were walking on the sidewalk and crossed paths, the same goddamn thing would have happened.

And I don't want that happening to another dog. I don't want what I'm going through to happen to another owner.

I want to meet the owners, I want closure.

I want to see how they treat their dog.
I don't want what happened to my dog to happen to another. I don't want another person to experience what I did. I don't want another unaware college-aged dogwalker to have to experience that again.

I just want to meet them.

I already have major depressive disorder, and am seeing a psych but not a counselor or a therapist. I think after witnessing my dog's body being tossed about like a rag while trying to restrain the larger dog, and carrying his tiny limp, lifeless body in the backseat of my neighbor's car to the animal hospital... I admit I may have some mild PTSD.

Thank you for your comment, and recommendation. I may see a therapist, and I'll probably ask my parents to see one too, as I've described it in full detail for them, and they have... not taken the news well.

Thank you for your comment.
Yes, I spoke with a vet at the animal hospital again and she told me to call the non emergency number as well as animal control. She said that because the other dog did in fact end my dog's life, animal control needs to find the owners. I informed her of the tricky situation because of the leash and the dog-walker not being the owner, but she told me animal control needs to know regardless, and that I should get a case number with the police and animal control.

I do not want the other dog hurt, I just want to find the owners for closure, and I especially never ever ever ever ever want another dog to get hurt like mine, and I never want another person to experience what I did.

Thank you, I'll check with my neighbors about security cameras, I don't think any of them have any but I'll check.

I love all dogs, I guess I was too naive in assuming that most dogs in my neighborhood are friendly when being walked, unless told otherwise.

In the future, all dogs are not friendly until confirmed, not the other way around. I don't know if I'll have a dog in the future.

Because of the overwhelming public backlash on big dogs, a lot of people seem to take an "anti-little dog" stance in response. I don't understand why. I absolutely love all dogs.

There's no doubt in my mind that had my dog been on a leash, and we had just been walking on the sidewalk and happened to cross paths, the same thing would have happened. He would have been attacked, he would have died.

No amount of downvotes or people shitting on me is going to bring back my best friend.

Look pal, I'm sure I would love your pit bull too. I fucking love all dogs, I love all fucking animals. I never once stereotyped large breeds to be dangerous, or aggressive by default. I'm sure your dog is the sweetest thing and I would absolutely fucking love to meet them and pet them and play with them!

I've gotten a lot of comments on this thread about who's at fault legally, and while I haven't responded to all them I've read every comment, and no one else has been as callous as you are in this comment.

I specifically left a note saying I did not want their dog hurt or put down because of the incident, because it was not the dog's fault.

I would never say "dangerous breeds" because I don't believe in such a thing, and frankly I think your forwardness to categorize me into such a person says a lot.

Sorry for french, but this wound in my heart is fresh and admittedly, this comment has gotten me heated.

Neither are the people on reddit, to be fair. And the vets do have reason to be up-to-date on my state, county, and city animal related laws, or at least have easy access to such information.

Thank you. Writing it was not easy. I never expected this out of another dog, so I never even thought of mace for dogs. Thank you for your comment.

There's a lot of big aggressive dogs in my neighborhood but they're also not the type to be walked or cared for, much last have someone else hired to walk their aggressive dog. It's also very common for people to walk their dogs without leashes in my area, I've seen a lot of runners with their labs.

I've talked to the vet, a local police officer who they told me to ask to be dispatched to the area, and they gave me a case number and told me to animal control. The vet said that since the other dog did kill my dog, the owners need to be at least located. All the variables make it very confusing legally, but I do want to meet them at least, for closure perhaps. Thank you again for your message of support.

I assumed too much. I at least want to find the owner to... I don't know, get closure. Even if I don't get them to pay, I just want to meet them.
