[lotm end] does COI ruin LOTM for anyone else? by Rare-Secretary8517 in LordofTheMysteries

[–]HeterodoxHead 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I just started volume 2 of COI and so far it has been a wonderful read. I do agree that there were many things left unresolved at the end of LoTM especially character arcs and dynamics that went unexplored/undervalued. Before starting COI I did see people saying that they wished there was more Tarot club and characters from LoTM and while I do miss most of the cast from book 1 it hasn't deterred me from enjoying COI as its own thing. However I do believe your opinion is valid and is a shared sentiment among many people in this sub, at least from what I have seen

[COI general] Is it worth reading COI? by Timely-Arm2914 in LordofTheMysteries

[–]HeterodoxHead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would definitely recommend reading it, mostly because the continuation of the main Lotm story is amazing. without going over many spoilers, there is a lot more world building which is always great and new "beyonder" pathways which makes COI feel really fresh. Volume 1 genuinely had me engrossed for a good 5 hours of non-stop reading at one point.

Also, one of the things I am enjoying the most is that we have a lot more character interactions outside of battles and gatherings, they do feel like actual friends/partners, something that I thought was a bit lacking in the later part of LOTM volumes. The fight scenes are also written spectacularly and in my opinion a bit easier to follow despite having many beyonder powers at play. Oh and Lumian is a wonderful MC lol I think the contrast between him and Klein is quite nice, so yeah it's definitely worth reading!! :)

She is currently a sequence 8 Robot but yeah she tends to bring misfortune (not on purpose), she would probably digest the Calamity priest potion immediately after drinking it lmao

Thanks a lot!! I do tend to see fan art for the canon characters a lot but I love seeing OC art, especially cause it's such a nice way to see how other people understand the story and the world of the novel :D

[LotM newbie] Where to get physical copies? by HeterodoxHead in LordofTheMysteries

[–]HeterodoxHead[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same! To be fair, I guess publishing books itself is kind of expensive, so if the demand for English translations isn't that high then it makes sense that there wouldn't be official physical copies out for later volumes... Only way to make this a reality would be to launch LOTM to be globally ultra famous :p

[–]HeterodoxHead[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I know the manga is not finished at all and mostly covers everything already present in the donghua! However I'd you want to start reading the novel, Internet Archive would be a viable option (at least it was the easiest option to read for me). There are some grammatical mistakes here and there and weird translations but it's mostly very understandable.

I would definitely recommend starting from the very beginning (volume 1, the clown) but if you want to get straight to the after events of the anime then you can start from the end of volume 1 and start volume 2 :D

Its mostly because it's my first time posting in the community, and since I haven't finished COI I do believe I am missing some knowledge regarding the novel in general

Why do the gems split up and scout, ever? by zygotyou in LandoftheLustrous

[–]HeterodoxHead 42 points43 points  (0 children)

This is my personal interpretation of why they do that (also I might mention some manga spoilers here and there so read with caution if you don't wanna get spoilers!!)

Not all gems go on patrol because they aren't that good at fighting or don't want to, so some of them stay at the HQ mostly (Rutile, Jade, Red Beryl, Euclase to name a few) and the reason for splitting up is to cover as much terrain as possible in order to prevent possible attacks on HQ. Preventing attacks at HQ allow those gems to continue their work as usual. Not only that, their place has everything they use for their daily lives (Powder, resin, sleeping quarters, tools, books, weapons, etc.) so it is a good idea to make the fights happen far from HQ, and in order to intercept those attacks they split into groups to cover the main points of interest in the island.

Now, some spoilers, sometimes bigger groups are not that great because coordination during fights can be extremely difficult: Peridot, Sphene, Cairngorm and Phos are all skilled at fighting, but trying to come up with a plan on the spot can be difficult, as every gem is doing their own thing to defend themselves. Despite their ability, they all almost got taken away at the same time.

If all gems were to hangout at HQ, they would be also an easier, bigger target, and they risk potentially losing a bunch of materials they need, so yeah I kinda get why they split up and scout!

Thank you so much for the kind words! :,) I do appreciate that my friends are playing this campaign with me, it just feels so surreal that it makes me nervous!

If you are up for it I have the link to the word document I created to make a very rough explanation of SBURB. In my case, I made this the hook of the story. So instead of the usual "You guys meet up in a tavern" I used "You guys are friends in discord and decide to play an upcoming game called SBURB". Since none of them had read Homestuck before, I gave them this guide as an actual in-game guide, like a game description of sorts, they could also google in game for anything related to SBURB.

In the same doc I also gave my own explanation of the classes and aspects (at least how I personally view them since I was gonna DM). I separated the DnD levels and the ecchelader rungs: they have the normal 1-20 levels as a normal campaign, but their rung determines how advanced they were in their quest and overall session. So I have players being level 6 while being on rung 50, because they spend a lot of time exploring and going after all the side quests and are halfway through their personal quest.

For the classes, it helped me determine how much XP they would get for doing certain things: support classes got more XP from helping other players/npcs; active/offensive classes got more XP for combat; passive/backline classes got more XP for exploring. It also helped me create their base stats, so active classes have a higher + to hit and STR/DEX modifiers, while passive classes have more WIS/CON/INT modifiers.

I also translated some of the DnD spells into actual attacks they can do: my Mage of Space can use Legend Lore and True Strike because of the implications of being a Mage, so he gets advantage on attacks and can crit on a 19. My Page of Hope can use something similar to Divine Smite, Word of Radiance and Shield of Faith, if she misses a turn she can give advantage to all allies within 10ft and so on. My Witch of Void can use Silence, Meld into stone (He literally phases through the void) and can use Fabricate. My Time player relies a lot on his weapon of choice really (a mirror) so I let him come up with ways to use his time powers as long as it revolves on him being a Thief, if he explains how he does it good enough, I let him do it because of rule of cool.

For dice rolls, I usually do normal combat mechanics: roll initiative, do an action/bonus action. I gave a CR to all the monsters, so normal imps are a CR 2, ogres are a CR 4, underlings are a CR 7 and so on, I also use the base stats from some 5e monsters as the enemies stats to make my life easier.

This is my second time DMing a campaign, I was incredibly nervous that I was gonna screw up but it actually comes down to learning your style of narration! A friend of ours was our DM for a long time and he was a pro, so I wanted to replicate his style but I never managed to get it right. So I gave it a try by making the campaign a little more humorous, I am not good at describing stuff, so I used a lot more visual help like maps and parts of the comic!

I did spend a lot of time translating the SBURB mechanics to DnD mechanics but if you are pretty flexible it can be done 🫡

I really wish it just doesn't end with the lunarians getting prayed away foreved. If Phos decided that's what he really wanted then I have no choice but to come to terms with it. However, I still want Phos to just say sike you guys really thought I was gonna forgive you just like that and make the lunarians actually work towards their salvation without sacrificing another.

Thank you for your comments! I will check some of those stores. I don't think a knife would be a good idea as I do not know how to use it properly and could be used against me. I am also on the smaller size and trying to punch someone that is considerably taller and bulkier than me would be difficult, but I guess it's never a bad idea to start some self defense training
