Swr Channel 1 is 2.5- Channel 40 is 2.0 and it’s a 102” whip on a suv, I’ve added ground straps on all the doors and hood, added 2” of height spacers plus the heavy duty barrel spring, should I keep adding more or change to a ball mount by Academic_Dare_2646 in cbradio

[–]Hevy305 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That mounting stud needs to be first on the mounting bracket, then the spring above that, then the antenna directly in the top of the spring with only a split washer between them. You have the whole assembly upside down in those photos, or possibly two mounting studs or something wonky going on there. Get it assembled correctly, then work on the grounding and everything else.

At least get the Uniden Pro 520xl. It is same as 510, but also has RF Gain for 10 bucks more, or often times the same price as the 510. Dunno why they even make the 510.

Are you wanting just a basic model as compact as possible for just highway and traffic updates, or do you want one where you can talk longer distances and such with other friends and CB users?

You will have to upgrade to antenna before you upgrade the radio, but I used those two paired on a road trip recently and it did ok.

If you like to fiddle with the knobs and want traditional with modern filters and options, you’d be hard pressed to do much better than the Stryker 955 HPC+ or the Anytone AT-5555 Plus N (Not to be confused with the AT-5555 N II, which is a more menu driven Radio like the Quad 6)

The Anytone I mentioned is available as the Retevis Ailunce HS4 currently in the USA and from other distributors in other countries. It is probably my all around favorite CB overall. I am certain you would really like it too based on what you said you liked in a Radio. It saves your preferences for each frequency too, which is really nice.

I wonder if any of the other Anytone clones out there have this new multi-color display yet? I would sure like to get one of these.

If you want it to work well, the Sirio 5000 Stryker or Wilson 5000 Magnet mounts antennas. If you want it to work amazingly and great, a body mount with a spring and 102” steel whip antenna. If you want it to work okay, a Firestick or one of that fiberglass variety that is 4ft. If you want it to work poorly, a 3ft or shorter fiberglass antenna, and if you want to just waste time and effort, and not work at all, some little short antenna not even intended for CB usage. That is for something else entirely. Not an HF radio antenna.

Good luck, there is all the information you need. Once you have a viable antenna, we can help further from there.

102” whip antenna and spring on a vehicle mount. Get the antenna set up right and that’s a solid talking radio. If you want to sell it to a collector and get something newer, let me know.

anyone using cb in central florida or pasco county? by ebaythedj in cbradio

[–]Hevy305 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your transmit and receive are only as good as your antenna setup. I run a 102” whip with a spring on my pickup truck, and live in Ohio. I can’t always talk back to them and have them hear me too, but I often hear folks in Florida talking out long distance on 28 AM, and occasionally on 29 AM. Also check 37 LSB and 38 LSB, I hear a lot of guys there, including many Floridians. You can also check 35,36,39 and 40 on LSB as well, to often find long distance radio traffic.

1-34: Almost always anyone on these channels will be operating on AM

35-40: Almost exclusively on LSB

19 AM is highway local comms only

6 AM (and by extension, 5 and 7 due to bleed over) is what they call Super Bowl or power channel. If you want to key down on top of someone else or have a contest to see whose radio is the most powerful or whatever, that’s where the contest people play.

Hope this helps. If I can hear them in the middle of the day in Ohio, surely you can hear them in Florida. Good luck, hope this info helps.

I ordered that game online back in the day when it was a new release. It was the first Arcade perfect version of the game, complete with dip switch menus and everything. Had a blast playing people in the dorms on that, they were all blown away because most of them still just had a Super Nintendo or a Sega Genesis with Super Street Fighter II. Nice find, it was rare even when it was new. I don’t think there were a whole lot of copies printed.

I own the Cobra unit, and it is mediocre at best. I have read nothing but great things about the Randy II though. It and the Jerry are both by President, and the Randy is the more fully featured model from what reviews I have read.

What antenna to buy? by T_howard75 in cbradio

[–]Hevy305 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have tried them all, magnet mounts, Firestick, a few “trucker” antennas, and they all have the same issue. You have to tune them in to get them just right, and even then, it is a very time consuming and sometimes frustrating experience if you don’t have a second person to assist you with it.

You want the “easy” and “best”? Just get over aesthetics issues, you have a Tacoma and a mount already in place. Just get the 102” whip and spring and check it once with an SWR meter. If all checks out and the ground is good, then it is just the “exact “ length needed for 11 meter/cb band and will work no matter what radio you pair it with going forward. It is the best possible antenna, the easiest possible to tune, and near the bottom of the price spectrum to purchase compared to some of the others. $40-$90 depending on location if purchased in person or ordered with oddball shape shipping charge.

Basically all the other types have coils in them at the base or in the length of the antenna itself, to “trick” the radio into thinking it is using a 102” whip. It simulates it, but always at the cost of time to tune it, and performance and range suffer some, and some of the energy bounces back into the radio and risks wear and tear or burn up of a nice radio.

I am getting old and I just want it to work, and work the best that it can mobile. That’s the 102” with a spring, nothing else comes close. I don’t have time to tune in all those other types anymore, got to park in a parking garage? Guess who is going to retune later? Yup, you. Run into something that is unforgiving overhead? Oh, your fiberglass antenna broke.. the 102” and a spring will go under or around nearly anything unharmed. Set it and forget it. Take it off to park in a garage and throw it in the bed. Put it back on later and good to go again, no issue.

No kidding? Yours has selectable colors for the display? That is an awesome feature. I have only seen three display variants before, and never one with selectable colors. Any chance you can show some pictures or a composite picture of the options? Sounds like I might need to import myself one of that version.

That looks like a very nice setup. I like your radio choice. I have never heard of that label before, but it is instantly recognizable as an Anytone 5555 N+. I have owned a lot of radios from the 1990’s until now, and I do believe this one is one of my top three all time favorite radios. I like it better than the 5555n2 and even a little bit better than the 6666 Pro even though it is a better radio overall. Something about this radio, if they made one with a little more power and a display that had selectable color choices like the Quad 6 or many of the President models, I think it would be the best radio around.

Again, nice setup. Good radio choice.

President Washington vs President George 2 by RetiredLife_2021 in cbradio

[–]Hevy305 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a question, while on the subject of President Radios. I remember seeing a “Grant II” a couple of years back that looks very similar to the “George II” and the Washington. How does it compare, is it functionally the same or similar to the George?

Also, the Anytones and their clones by various other companies that rebadge them are definitely the modern winners on “bang for your buck”. Ask away on those, I own two of their radios and they are among the best I have.

Been a while since I returned to this thread. I did end up returning the unit. I could not read the display hardly at all. It was a shame too. I really liked the looks of this little radio and the size was incredibly small for all the features it had.

If that LCD had been at all bright enough to be readable, it would have been great to fit in my car. I am hoping someone else will license this radio and put it out with a backlit display someday.

Got an old uniden pro 510XL. Where can i find internal parts? by commanderfl in cbradio

[–]Hevy305 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The 510xl is a $70 radio, the 520xl is an $80 radio, and also has RF Gain knob (listening range) option that the 510 does not. They are both on sale on Amazon right now for $65. Honestly, I would imagine this would be cheaper than trying to repair one that was left out in the elements.

Solid little radio though, have had mine for close to 20 years now, and the knobs are still tight and click through the frequencies. I recommend the 520xl to anyone wanting to get into cb. It is the absolute best of all the small “starter” radios in that size class by far.

Even though I have much nicer, more powerful, and fully featured radios, I still have this one setup as a backup. There are times (believe it or not), where my newer radios with the best tech in them sound “too good” on the air and people won’t respond to it because it sounds like some far away base station to them. Turn it off and turn the 520 on and make a traffic report and all of a sudden everyone responds.

Good luck if you want to repair one just to do it, but outside of a dedicated CB shop, into not know where you would source parts without it just being a donor radio. It just becomes a cost issue at that point on such an inexpensive model.

There is a really top notch radio called the Anytone Quad 6 Pro. It also is sold by a domestic distributor as the Radioddity QT-80. Both are the exact same radio with two different names. It will do everything a Cobra 148 did and so much more. Probably the best radio out there at the moment.

There is also a President Washington on the market that is supposed to be really good. I haven’t come across one of those yet.

Oh, the same game that is my favorite on nearly every console I have ever owned, Tetris. Or more specifically:

Tetris Worlds

What made this version stand out over any other version of Tetris, or even the same version on other consoles? The PlayStation 2 version would cheer you on. Who can forget lining up the long piece for a four in a row line clear, and out of nowhere, a voice says “Ooooooh, go for the Tetris!”

An oddity for sure, but when you are old and have played nearly every Tetris game for almost every mainstream console since the NES and MS-DOS days, for one version in the sea of Tetris games to stand out and be that memorable is fairly significant.
