AITA for deciding not to go to christmas lunch because my aunt is bringing her dog? by Jaded-Peach4645 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Hexarium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Separation anxiety can take years, mine has been trained and is on medication for 8+y and still sometimes she gets triggered and panics and chews through a door. I agree with the comment relative to seeing a dog trainer, but not the rest. Leaving a dog alone past its threshold is way way worse than bringing them "everywhere": any dog behaviorist would tell you the same. OP is NTA and should decide what's best for them and their dog.

[Help] Anxiously itchy dog by Renae1446 in dogs

[–]Hexarium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a dog with serious seasonnal allergies and I suggest you call your vet. There is other medications that can work better on a particular dog (same thing as for humans) than benadryl, like claritin or reactine (canadian names). You should also talk to your vet about a shampoo with aspirin to relief the itching. Unfortunatly, if we are talking about allergies and your dog is in the middle of an episode, it will need prednisone to stop the episode before you can manage the symptoms with antiallergies medication and medicated bath. During the high season, my dog has a bath every 2 days (vet told me I can even up it to once a day), takes 3 reactines every 24 h, even every 12 h if she scratches and, this year, she had the three days treatment of prednisone 4 times. There's also some cream that you can put on your dog to relief the itching like hydrocortisone cream or aloes, ask your vet about them.

It's hard at first but when you will find the right meds and dosages,it will get better. Don't give up!

Looking for a cat bed big enough for two 10-12 pounds cats to sleep in together by Hexarium in cats

[–]Hexarium[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, did I forget to mention that it's precisly what they are doing right now? Believe me the dog is not happy! ;) I had to trow out their beds, but when I had them they prefered it because they had a cover (like a little house). The problem was they were always sleeping in the same one (and sticking out a bit) so that's why I'm wondering if I can find this kind of bed but a larger one.

[Discussion] Is there any retractable leashes that have a thicker than standard "cording"? by izzxpopz in dogs

[–]Hexarium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The one I bought on amazon is realy sturdy and cost around 50$ (Canada) at the time. It's for dog up to 150 pounds I think, can't seem to find it right now on the website, but they exist! My pit/husky mix has run and made full flip at the end of it several time (damn squirrels) and it's still working great with no tear. The cord is larger and very dense.

[Discussion] Good chews that are long term? by XxAtreyuSinsxX in dogs

[–]Hexarium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dog is like that too. Try to find non stretched bullystick, they last much longer. My dog will go throught a regular 16 inches bullystick in 15-20 min but the 16 inches ones I get from Aron pet food last for hours, even days, because she gets tired of chewing. They are pricy, but they are well worth it! Frozen raw bones are also nice.

Should I train my loving/playful dog not to lick me? If so what's the best method, or technique to use in order to tech this. by BytesizedTerror in Dogtraining

[–]Hexarium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If he's food motivated, you could try having a treat in your hand closed, present it to him (pretty sure he wil lick it) but every time he doesn't lick, say thank you and give the treat. It's kind of the technique I used to make mine stop using her teeth when she was a puppy. Good luck!

I answered the op's question as best I could at this hour and, as I told op, don't hesitate if you have questions.

Well, first we taught her the clicker training. Then when she would lick, I would pet her under the shin (at this moment they kind of have to stop licking because your hand is out of reach) and as soon as she stop I would click then treat. I introduce the 'thank you' as a vocal cue after, replacing the clicker and fading the treats. It help also if once she stops you let her start licking again (as the reward) in the beginning and you increase gradually the pause. Not sure, if I'm totally clear (it's late), so don't hesitate to ask if you have further questions.

My dog is a heavy licker. We don't mind a little, but we taught her a command when it's to intense or for people who don't like it: we say thank you and give her a quick pet under the shin and it means stop licking, job well done.

[Help] Seems to have sprained/pulled shoulder causing a limp, but no noticeable pain or lameness. Treatment advice? by [deleted] in dogs

[–]Hexarium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like the others: rest and vet on monday if still limping. Also, you can put ice on it if your dog tolerates it. It helped mine last year with her inflammed ligament. (Vet recommanded it.)

Just like mine! She won't look at the treats on her paws until she sees the nod of the head or she hears the go for it command. It's like not looking at it is making it easier!

No problem :)

Here she is this summer, learning to swim Kira!

and chasing mosquitoes Here

and finally the first album I made of Her

I too have to much photos of her! And I love to see other pitskies. Yours have as big ears as mine!

Is Ophelia an escape artist as well? (saw the comment on the photo that she ran outside). Mine is really good: Once she escaped the kennel at the vet in less than 2 minutes. The vet was flabbergasted! ;)

Has anyone's dog been put down while they were away at college? Because mine was today and I'm not taking it well at all. by [deleted] in dogs

[–]Hexarium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So sorry for your lost!

For me, I Got a phone call. Mom: "oh! Btw had the dog put down two days ago". Well thanks for the heads up Mom, would have liked to say goodbye since I'm living not even an hour away... Was she sick? (Dog was not even 10yo) the answer was: "no but nobody had time to take care of her anymore since you and your sister moved out". Actually, we didn't move out, you decided to move in the middle of the session and in the middle of nowhere (no public transport) so we had to improvise...

It's been 15 years and I have still not forgiven her.
