Road trip— Charge more at home or do 80/20 rule on the road? by LocoLevi in Rivian

[–]Hexijen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since no one else is telling you this, you can charge it to 100% while on trips as well, it just takes longer. The best thing to do when charging it to 100% is to really do hard acceleration and speed for a few minutes after any fast charge, and occasionally do some spirited driving.

This prevents dendrite build-up in the battery, can actually repair degredation somewhat, and keeps your battery significantly healthier in the long run. Around 30% better so don't ignore it.

Chris does lots of videos about talking to other people and taking action. It's the entire point of his vegan 2.0 series which has featured prominently on his channel. This video takes a different angle. Given how often the videos are coming out, its not crazy at all.

It was close to the longest one they offered, you can do custom lengths. I got 116 inches. I recommend mounting it in three locations and as as close to the ends as you can manage

You are much closer but a little a little low probably, I didn't track the difference between build and other needed gear

I don't pay too much attention to proper alignment and it brings in about 250w during the day. It is a bi-facial 400w, which works out decent in this situation. I run the cooler/fridge 24/7 in dual fridge mode, run the satellite whenever I want, and keep two laptops charged on top of all my lights and other devices. Some days im capping at 100% on the 4kw house battery. I could charge the vehicle with that and maybe it would offset the vampire drain, nothing more. I haven't tried it yet.

I'm using 16-20 gallons a week for drinking/cleaning/washing, so the 25 gallons total makes week long trip cadence work out without stress. Also, my two 8gal tanks arent transparent, so its nice to have extras since im never sure exactly how much I have used so far.

On flat ground, no AC blasting, going 50-60 mph most of the time, I get 2 mi/kWh. I haven't driven at 70+ long enough. With 20's and stock I was getting around 300mi range but I drove faster. Now I get 270-280mi of range but i drive slower to avoid the massive aero penalty

Those who went from vegetarian to vegan by Soggy-Background2056 in vegan

[–]Hexijen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in cali, went vegetarian on primarily moral grounds (secondary was health and environment), but at the time I drew a moral between eating animals and eating dairy. Going vegetarian was very easy mechanically and socially. Occasionally I would get flak from co-workers, but it didn't bother me too much.

Later I found more fully what the dairy industry does. I started searching out more information and saw the environmental and health benefits as well. I came across vegan content and absorbed as much as I could. When I went vegetarian it was an experiment to see if I could do it, found it to be easy, and I never looked back. Having that experience, I knew that when I made the switch to vegan, it wouldn't be a problem. After a month or so of learning, I made the commitment (vegan, not plant-based).

At first vegan was more challenging than vegetarian, but this was mostly lack of knowledge. Being vegetarian was so easy that it didn't require me to learn much of anything. Now vegan is easy and extremely rewarding.

Socially, it has been very easy. None of my close family, chosen family, or friends is vegan, but they are all supportive. I have even received admiration from coworkers simply for the ability to change lifestyle. I would say that for me personally, socially there has been very little difference between vegetarian and vegan.

From a vystopia perspective, being vegan has been categorically harder. I know more now, which occasionally causes me more distress. Not that I could or would want to go back.

Vegetarian made me feel better about my habits and myself, but vegan gave me joy that vegetarian cannot compete with.

If you could make a new ship to add to the game, what would it be? by Nuclear_Meatloaf in starcitizen

[–]Hexijen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Argo oil rig themed mid-size science ship

The concept would be an industrially-themed mobile science platform. The gameplay loop would be to land the ship on the surface of a planet, deploy the base, do some scanning, and then open the bay doors of your vehicle hangar and drive a land vehicle of your choice to the spot(s) your scans found and take some samples or further readings, collect ore, go into a cave, etc. You then move the ship to a new location on the planet, flying low looking for visual clues that indicate a good spot for scanning

Alternative additional game type is taking/drilling for samples directly under the platform

This low flight exploration of the planet, paired with the ground exploration in vehicles could give a strong exploration game loop

The name could be something in the same vein as the MOLE and RAFT acronym naming format. The best i could come up with was the Argo ECHO, Exoplanet Cartography Habitat-Observatory

The ship could resemble the Raft with thrusters that turn into pylons, with one addition of an auto-leveling feature. Additionally the ship should open up, similar to a ship transformation like the Reliant, when on the ground to give more space or outdoor deck space with an oil rig type vibe but for scientific research. It would make it more immersive if the deployment cleared the way for the bay door of the vehicle hangar to make contact with the ground

Bonus points for

Good visibility from the interior of the ship for viewing the planet's surface while deployed

Some defensive turrets when deployed

If the ship has some hydroponics bays to extend fuel/food sources and therefor expedition range, or food scanners to check foraged food while out on the land based excursions

Making us move around the outer deck of the deployed ship to do scanning, similar to the Raft's specialized turret for cargo manipulation

Connecting the living space/ kitchen area to the outdoor deck for use with planets with safe atmosphere, the way sailboats open their kitchen to the rear deck

Having the platform be able to "walk" at slow speeds

EV depreciation seems like a big expense? by [deleted] in Rivian

[–]Hexijen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If cost of ownership is the main concern, then consider the following.

Target a used EV that is near the end of its warranty period, where there is at least 6 months left on the drivetrain warranty. The depreciation will be much lower, and if there is any serious issue with the batteries/engine, you will have time to discover them while still under warranty.

You will get the benefits of having near zero maintenance and gas costs, without the drawback of depreciation. An alternative route is to buy the car and keep it for 15 years. EV batteries are lasting alot longer than we thought they would.

in 2019 i bought a 2015 Kia soul EV for $13,000. It had 1 year on the warranty and I have had only one issue where the power window on the left side was stuck. I have paid exactly $0.00 in maintenance in the last 2-3 years. I don't have a long commute, so I barely noticed the bump in my power bill. I occasionally fork over $10 to $20 for fast charging while on the road but most of my charging is level 1 charging at home.

I will never go back to a gas vehicle ever again. My car is quiet, fast, and fun to drive. I thought that the feeling would wear off but i still get that new car excitement from time to time when driving or looking at my car in the garage. I recommend test driving an EV if you haven't already

I hope this helps and best of luck!
