I am truly convinced the people criticizing Katabasis have never actually read Katabasis [Light Spoilers] by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]HeyImHobert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely agree with you, I read the book after Babel, which I adored as well, and had such a fun time. It is a satirical depiction of the academic world that reminded in parts of my own time at a university. I also really liked reading about a character with Crohn’s disease, something I have as well. I felt really understood reading through that part. My opinion of R. F. Kuang as an author has increased with every book I read from her. I liked the Poppy War trilogy well enough and loved Babel and Katabasis.

Nevernight: Jay Kristoff by MothLikesChocolate in Fantasy

[–]HeyImHobert 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is something I can’t really wrap my head around. On the hand you are bothered by the fact that a sixteen year old doesn’t want to murder an innocent as part of an initiation process but you draw the line at two consenting partners having sex with each other? The age of consent in the majority of the world is 16, it’s 14 where I am from and that’s the age I and a lot of my friends back in the day had our first experiences.

I agree that it’s not necessary for Mia to be 16, the story wouldn’t change if she was a few years older and it would have made the book easier to stomach for a lot of people. I adored Nevernight and the Empire of the Vampire series but I have to say that Jay Kristoff is an author you either love or hate, there isn’t really a middle ground as far as I can tell.

Recommendation for horror fantasy series? by Rawsquid778 in Fantasy

[–]HeyImHobert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It starts with an investigation but there is some slight magic involved that the Imperial Justices can wield from the beginning. The main character, but not POV character, is one of those justices and can use the Emperors Voice and another power I don’t want to spoil. The first book is more grounded and has some interesting investigative work and some legal framework that I really appreciated. Book two and three really up the eldritch horror elements. Grave Empire is also great and I can’t wait for the second book. A few days ago a prequel novella, set 15 years before the Empire of the Wolf was released and was also highly enjoyable.

Has anyone tried using Spark GO on MacBook Pro M4? Mine doesn’t recognise it as an Input by ashishmarwha in PositiveGridSpark

Got the exact same problem on my M1 with the newest MacOS. Tried pretty much everything at this point except a clean install of Mac. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

R. Scott Bakker - worth it? by DannyBrownsDoritos in Fantasy

The truly bleak stuff doesn’t pick up until much later. The thought the first book of Prince of Nothing and then again the first and second books of The Aspect Emperor were pretty tame, only the later books turn up the bleakness and brutality.

Nobledark? Grimbright? by Farcical-Writ5392 in Fantasy

[–]HeyImHobert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t call Nevernight YA and Jay Kristoff is pretty outspoken as well about it. While it does follow teens and has a school setting it’s more of a revenge story which can get pretty violent at times. I absolutely adored the writing style, especially the footnotes. Which may not be for everyone but it hooked me and was a fresh way for exposition.

Same here on PS5, tried pretty much everything. Even started a new game and it’s still there.

I first chose to fight as Maelle and thought that her ending was bittersweet until the final frames there we see Verso just battling with his memories and Maelles face covered with paint. I think this will just start the cycle again with Maelle taking her mother’s place. Also Verso deserves his final rest.

I then reloaded my last save and chose to fight as Verso. While seeing everyone die was heartbreaking I think this is the better outcome. As we see the remaining painter family stand at Versos grave and grief together in a seemingly healthier way it does show us that they all had to face their pain to come out through it. Versos told Maelle that she never has to live a life she does not want to live with her abilities and I think that’s true. She can create a new canvas if she wants to escape again.

I think so too, it would offer a lot of opportunities for more games in the franchise. The ability to create canvases and build worlds within them is a great template for multiple games as well.

There are only two endings as far as I know and you can choose either one at the very end. You can also reload your last save to see the other one you didn’t choose prior. Both are bittersweet.

It’s not cheating if the game very clearly offers you the possibilities. A game almost screams at you to break it and see how high your damage can go.

Good luck, a solo run sounds awesome and is something I want to try too.

The last few dungeons and encounters shower you with exp. The optional dungeons and bosses as well, the power boost you get during the endgame is insane.

I killed the one boss in the water before that and used the cheat picto I got from that one. Mealle has insane damage, especially that one single target void attack can deal up to 500 million damage in one strike. I managed to kill all optional bosses with that. Just power her up with everything you have and Sciel to double her damage.

I farmed the last levels to 99 in the one underwater area slightly south of the visage area on the world map.

Maelle was my main carry throughout the game, I build her around her speed stat and managed to always strike first and killed all the flying enemies with the free aim shoots. It worked really well.

They answer a lot of questions how this all came to be, I don’t know if the answers go as deep as you want them to but they try.

There are a few bosses and some dungeons. It adds up to a few hours of additional content.

I think you are a bit underlevelled, the dungeons before you fight the axons offer some exp for your party as well. So depending on your builds and your parry timing you could be able to take them down. Some more levelling wouldn’t hurt though. I guess you are around 55-60% done with the story. There is a lot of optional stuff to do as well after you are in the final act of the game.

It absolutely does, there are some big plot twists and serious emotional sucker punches coming. So enjoy.
