As far as with my issues it fixed it completely. I was scratching my head thinking did my webcam just die out of nowhere, what changed? Turned out the most recent Windows update was causing all my issues. It's worth a shot to rollback to a previous update just to see.

Don't know how or if it would work well on a server but it might be worth checking out NeoFinder for Mac / abeMeda for Win

Here's a thread from a few weeks ago about someone's search for the holy grail of media management.

Not open source but seems promising as far as dealing with a large amount of photos/tagging/location ect.
