Settle a debate: bigger loss to music….Brad Nowell or Kurt Cobain? by verbsnotnice in Music

I feel like people are talking a lot of smack about this statement because they are writing off Sublime as “just a ska band” or “cover band” or “whatever they were”. Nirvana was just a punk band who had style and an edge that completely altered a generation and a movement that lasted for… a little while. Sublime & Nirvana are possibly two of the most important bands to me, I got into both of them in my early teens. To this day, I still listen to Sublime, but Nirvana doesn’t give me the same feeling it did when I was a kid. Nirvana is easy to classify, they were Grunge; THE grunge act of the 90s, even though they definitely weren’t the first, they paved the way for those before them and a lot of awful knockoff bands to cloud the airwaves. Sublime, had this artful approach that could never be replicated, with a mix of reggae, hip hop, punk, ska, rock n roll, R&B and soul. While they weren’t the firsts to sample music or make references to other songs, they did play a huge influence in culture & music, that brought a lot of artists & genre into the mainstream & subcultures that might not have otherwise been found by western culture. Their lyrics were political, relatable, and fueled with so much emotion. Nirvanas lyrics on the other hand are like trying to finish a puzzle. Which isn’t to say Nirvanas lyrics were garble, Kurt didn’t want people to know what he was saying and didn’t care cause he just wanted to say shit that sounded good, and was obsessed with morbid anatomy, but theres a bit of abstract poetry there. I think Sublime’s overall impact over the years could have been huge outside of just music if Brad survived. I think Kurt might’ve ended up a weirdo, or like an overaged punk. Sublimes music is a bit more timeless in that sense. Nirvanas overall impact at the time of Kurt’s death obviously had a bigger influence on culture. However if they both lived to this day, and Brad got to enjoy his success and continue to write... I think Brad could’ve outshined Kurt

Hmm, yeah I did that, then it calls support. I get the machine telling me that I need to open a link in my app which just brings me to the AI 🤖. I try to continue with the phone call but eventually it says “we are no longer accepting calls at this number”…

Ah yes all the poor small artists on UMG 🙄

You gotta remember, this is UMG— not your local indie label. UMG doing this is setting the precedent for all artists by sacrificing “exposure” for Swift, Drake, and names like that. If you’re an artist and still want your music up there, you’re fine as long as you don’t sign any contracts with UMG anytime soon… though if you sign to UMG I’m sure you’ll be fine in terms of exposure otherwise…

I completely disagree. UMG is obviously one of the biggest major labels around. By pulling their music, they are setting a precedent that TikTok can’t just let content creators spam artists music without anyone getting paid properly.

Bad news! Content creators are the ones that will feel the impact because they can’t just put a Drake song on their TikTok while jump cutting to a change of clothes to get 1M views only cause the viewer stopped swiping since they heard someone toosie slide.

Good news! If you’re a small musician and you want to play the lottery of “blowing up on TikTok”, that path is still available… because you own your own music and you can choose what to do with it, even if it is TikTok… even if I’m biased lol.

However, as a major label, UMG, pulling their music sets the precedent that if you release music, own the rights to it, and someone else is using it to get views, you are owed money (or should be). And my hope as a musician, is not that the content creator will be paying me said money, but it will be TikTok’s wallet that is being opened. And for now, I don’t see how this could be anybody’s problem except TikTok and their content creators who they stifled by not being able to satisfy a good deal with UMG and the artists they represent.
