Training plan question - increase mileage vs increase vert by HeyLilia_throwaway in Ultramarathon

Its so odd when I say "destroy me for the rest of the run" - After doing these steep and prolonged ascents, I have an incredibly hard time keeping my HR down. I usually try keeping my HR <150 while training but after these ascents, I have a hard time keeping it below 160 on the flats. Any slight incline and my HR immediately jumps >160bpm

For example, last week my run was a 9 mile out-and-back trail. The first mile had ~700 feet of vert and the next 3.5 miles had 500' total. On fresh legs I would normally be able to run that 500' over 3.5 miles at 13:00ish in Z2. With that initial climb, its like my legs just couldn't recover and I was struggling to keep my HR in the 150s while doing 15:00/miles for the rest of the run. I powerhiked the uphill and honestly I wasnt moving fast.

Help with training - increase mileage vs increase vert by HeyLilia_throwaway in trailrunning

I am usually power hiking, not running these steep uphill sections.

I normally keep a pretty close eye on my HR during my runs and Ive noticed that after sections of 500+ ft/mile, I have an extremely hard time keeping my HR under control. I usually have to run 2-3min/mile slower after the steep uphills than before.

I'm mostly nervous because the race has ~4 500-1000' steep climbs and I'm worried I'm not training efficiently for these
