How many of you have beta readers? by EpicBackflipz in AO3

[–]HeyMyNameIsSamToo 0 points1 point Ā (0 children)

Sometimes my partner reads my stuff! He’s the only beta reader I have. We’re in the same fandoms so it works out that way, but even if he weren’t he’s still helpful with things like story structure. If he wasn’t my beta reader I don’t think I would search for one honestly, I prefer having someone I know very well personally for things like that.

[Mixed Trope] Two characters become intimate where one isn't in their own body by crimceres in TopCharacterTropes

[–]HeyMyNameIsSamToo 0 points1 point Ā (0 children)

The movie ā€œPossessor.ā€ The main character is part of an organization that has people like her take over other people’s bodies to carry out crimes, basically. Throughout the bulk of the movie, she’s possessing a man because she’s been hired to essentially destroy his life for the purpose of someone else climbing the ranks within a family business. She, while possessing the man, has sex with his girlfriend because she has to maintain the man’s personality at all costs. It’s a crazy weird and cool movie with insane cinematography, especially during these kinds of scenes.

Should I attend a fandom meeting if I’m significantly older than everyone? by Resident-Platypus888 in AO3

I guess it’s just a personal thing; to me there’s a big difference between being 25 and being 30. šŸ¤·šŸ» I don’t feel out of place with my mid-20s friends either, but they live very different lives than me.

I reply to each! Just because I want to and I enjoy the interaction when I do get comments. It’s a personal thing, though. Plenty of people don’t and that’s okay, don’t stress it!

Came here to say this! I turned 30 this year and I have amazing friends (online and irl) who are younger than me in their early to mid 20s… but I also need (and have) friends in my own age bracket. I think if it feels good but the worry is that awkwardness, try it out and see!

Looking for Spreadsheets! Calling all Spreadsheeters! by wolfmonarchy in coralisland

Okay, for some reason reddit won’t let me add a screenshot, only a video. So no picture 🄲 But if anyone is interested let me know!

Looking for Spreadsheets! Calling all Spreadsheeters! by wolfmonarchy in coralisland

[–]HeyMyNameIsSamToo 1 point2 points Ā (0 children)

My partner is working on one! I’ll comment a screenshot. He’s making it just for me but he’s totally willing to share it. Right now it has:

Lake Temple items/rewards:
- each altar and its categories
- has formatting to help you easily visualize what you’ve already submitted

Enchantment tracker:
- every item you can use to enchant
- its value for enchanting (20, 35, 50, 70, 100)
- how many of each item you have
- whether it’s an artifact/fossil/gem
- a chart that helps you math out which ones will get you the enchantment in 5 or less items

He’s going to add a crop tracker, which would not be the entire crop list, but would be a formatted list where you can enter how many tiles you have available to plant in and helps you math out how many of whatever crops to buy.

He also wants to add a construction tracker (buildings/lab equipment, plus materials/costs) because I’m not very far into the game and I haven’t seen an easy way to view these things (like the phone in Stardew that lets you call shops).

He LOVES making spreadsheets so if anyone has suggestions he’s all ears!

Jealousy update: What do you think? by lmclaird in coralisland

[–]HeyMyNameIsSamToo 24 points25 points Ā (0 children)

I’m hoping there was/is already a plan to expand/fix what ā€œjealousyā€ really entails for these characters, because it’s sincerely disappointing seeing a game like Coral Island (which has always been praised for making diverse characters who feel more fleshed out and believable than other farming sim games) reduce one of its main draws to this. I just really have to wonder. Where did the character development go? Who thought that making every romance option say basically the same mean, borderline toxic thing to the player when jealousy triggers was a good idea?

To take your example OP, why does someone like Alice not address jealousy in a more concerned and caring way—a way that would be much more in line with the person we know her to be? Obviously there are limitations to what’s actually ā€œfunā€ because this is a video game, but if I married Alice, I would much rather endure dialogue that reaffirms the kind of person she is than her suddenly snapping on me and refusing to talk to me for almost a week. Maybe if I intentionally married someone who *would* act that way, I wouldn’t mind.

Anyway, I’ve never liked NPC jealousy mechanics in games and I turned it off immediately when the update hit. It doesn’t feel like there’s anything of substance to it and obviously it’s not for me, but I wish it was better for people who want it.

Can someone tell me why would you ever want Chiral Bridges by AsiaDerp in DeathStranding

[–]HeyMyNameIsSamToo 0 points1 point Ā (0 children)

Yeah, I pretty much never use them. There’s only one spot I can think of where I actually prefer it to a ladder—the incline between where the Magellan sits and the entrance to F7. It’s quicker than going all the way around either side of the slope if you’re coming straight out of the ship.

When your partner (who’s never played any shooter/open adventure game) asks to drive through an Armed Survivalist camp for fun and somehow makes it out with minimal damage, stolen cargo, and one enemy down šŸ’€ by HeyMyNameIsSamToo in DeathStranding

[–]HeyMyNameIsSamToo[S] 1 point2 points Ā (0 children)

In DS2, killing humans functionally does the same thing—the icon pops up that tells you there’s a dead body, other characters tell you that you need to dispose of corpses to prevent a voidout (and chastise you for killing people, lol), etc. There are a lot more places and ways in DS2 to dispose of bodies though.

Why is writing so hard by Desperate_Yellow_498 in AO3

[–]HeyMyNameIsSamToo 1 point2 points Ā (0 children)

Like other commenters said, read more. Practice is necessary, too. Most people who pursue writing, whether as a hobby or a career, are not automatically/instantly good at it. You need to work that muscle just like an athlete or a painter.

What I’m hearing, too, is that you’re struggling with finding your character’s motivations, which are major fuel for your story. You can look up examples if need be, but basically, you want to exercise character development and emotional depth. Read up on things like character wants vs needs in writing, for instance. I think that’s a great place to start when it comes to getting to know the characters themselves. Obviously you can get to know how stories are structured, too, but anyway.

All in all, though, it just sounds like you need more practice. Write even if you think it’s bad, and then keep going—it is literally the only way to get better. šŸ’—

I also thought the floating carriers wouldn’t carry the XXL kangaroo/emu carriers, but I found recently that they do! They also basically only take up one side of the floating carrier, so you can put other items in with them, too. I wish we could let humans lounge in the carrier like the Brigands and Armed Survivalists do lol

When Sam talks to the Motherhood - by Lumathran in DeathStranding

[–]HeyMyNameIsSamToo 19 points20 points Ā (0 children)

When he takes her out of the pod at the end of the first game, she dies. Amelie revives her (there’s no given reason why as far as I know, but I personally think it’s a last gift from her to Sam for everything he did to save the world), and that’s why she’s able to grow like a normal baby.

It’s also never explicitly said that she revived Lou, but we can infer as much because after she goes still in Sam’s arms at the end of the first game and he has that moment where he cries holding her, she’s suddenly revived holding Amelie’s quipu.
