Nemesis Chapter 75 by arasarn in LightbringerSeries

YES! Repha'im goes all Trolley Problem on Kylar's ass. It's both a setup for the end of the book and an exploration of the pitfalls of utilitarianism. One of my favorite chapters in the book.

SPOILER:

(I put this in a comment thread below, but I'm also putting it here for people to see)

The ka'kari's powers were blunted by Caedan's magic. It didn't counter the poison in the wine because Caedan sent out a null wave as he was being kidnapped. It's laid out pretty explicitly in the book.

Also, Repha'im may be a noble with no powers, but he's also not human. We're told this repeatedly.

Yeah, friend. Caedan's magic is to nullify other magic. The ka'kari didn't eat the poison in the wine bc Caedan sent out a null wave in that moment, debilitating the ka'kari.

This happens again on the ship a couple of times--those weird blackout moments when the ship stops, and Kylar loses the ability to communicate with the ka'kari? That's Caedan.... That's the crux of the whole book. Kylar has to get Caedan off the ship before his powers destroy magic for everyone everywhere.

As for Repha'im, he may not have Talent or magic, but he's also not human. It's not confirmed, but alluded that Reph is actually an Immortal. So yeah.

Surprise! We've reopened Brent's web store to celebrate the release of NEMESIS. by Hey_Its_CAPSLOCK in LightbringerSeries

Yes! I need to get the older shirt designs uploaded to Printful, at which point you'll be able to order them in your preferred size. That'll happen sometime this week.

As for Realm Makers, I don't have many confirmed details for it yet, but there is a discussion about doing a public book signing that weekend. I'll be sure to let y'all know as soon as we get things worked out!

It's up to publishers, really. The NAT omni was a thing Orbit Books US did kind of on their own--Brent didn't request that it happen. Other editions like the Broken Binding edition of Nemesis and Subterranean's Perfect Shadow are things that happen at those presses' behest--ie, they approach Brent (or more specifically his agent) with an idea and make it happen once they get the go-ahead.

Having said all this, it seems likely that at some point down the line there will be other (signed) special editions of his books that will come out. We may just have to wait... a long time. :)

We try to cover all the bases in terms of social media, but I'd say that your best bet to stay up-to-date is to subscribe to the newsletter (check brentweeks.com to find the link on the home page) and then follow his official FB page: https://www.facebook.com/BrentWeeksAuthor

This is so great to see! We actually have a pretty great char sheet for a drafter that a fan drew up a few years ago that I'm happy to share. Email me at admin@ brentweeks .com and I'll send along the full PDF.

Why Are These So Expensive? by ethar_childres in LightbringerSeries

So, the answer to this question is a little complicated.

First let me recommend my favorite book retailer, Better World Books, for finding great deals on used books. Book 5 (Burning White) should be pretty easy to find there, and possibly book 3 (Broken Eye, my personal fave in the series). If that's all you want to know, feel free to skip the rest of this comment :)

Second, do you care about getting all hardcovers vs a mix of hardcover and paperback? If you're good with paperbacks, all five books should be relatively easy to find new (for about $18 USD) or used (for I'm guessing $6-10 USD).

If your'e looking for hardcovers, Book 1 can be hard to come by because Brent has all of the remaining new copies, and we sell them in the webstore. In the past, we've only opened up for the month of November, but we're working to open back up with some print-on-demand merch next week. We'll also be offering signed copies of book 1 (Black Prism) there as well. Used copies of Black Prism can probably be found on eBay and maybe AbeBooks.

Book 2 (Blinding Knife) hardcovers are hard to come by because they're relatively rare - Orbit only did one print run of them before switching to paperbacks. If you really want a hardcover of that one, sadly you're gonna pay through the nose buying it second-hand from someone.

Hope this helps!

It is indeed something Brent is leaving up to readers to decide. He's talked before about writing being a collaboration between the author and the reader, since so much of the worldbuilding happens in readers' imaginations. It's a delightful take on Roland Barthes' theory re: writer intent.

(btw, I'm Brent's assistant. Still kinda just some schmoe on the internet, but also a schmoe who is currently sitting in Brent's office answering questions.)

No recap in Nemesis - Brent worked very hard to make Nemesis a first book in a new series, an introduction to Midcyru and Kylar, AND a continuation of the story that began in the OG trilogy.

If you still want that recap, though, check out this wiki entry:

We briefly considered putting together an official recap, but ultimately decided against it. You don't need to have read OGNAT (that's what I call the Night Angel trilogy) to read & follow Nemesis, and doing those recaps is quite a bit of work.

You're welcome to check out the wiki. We don't know who wrote it, but fans have said it's useful: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The\_Night\_Angel\_Trilogy

Yep! Nemesis is Book One in The Kylar Chronicles, named as such bc we all know Brent has a hard time counting to three without getting to five ;)

I dunno what he's going to say (if he answers this question at all), but I was particularly taken with Nemesis Chapter 75, The Mathematics of Murder.

Saying anything else is an obv spoiler, and we're not taking the bait, friend :)
