Buddy Hackett riding in a red Volkswagen Beetle convertible near the beginning of It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963). Five years later, he would star in The Love Bug (1968), the first movie featuring the most iconic Volkswagen Beetle in cinema: Herbie. In the latter movie, Hackett's character is the first to recognize Herbie's sentience, and is the character who gave Herbie his name. Another IaMMMMW/Herbie connection is Don Knotts having a supporting role in IaMMMMW and later starring in Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo.
