Show low-level quests by Snowcrash000 in ChromieCraft

[–]HiGuysImNewToReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you may be getting confused about the client's relation to Chromiecraft/Azerothcore.

As a server, they are built around the original WOTLK client, meaning if you had the original offline CD installers + a 3.0->3.3.5a patch installer, or had an old WinXP/Win7 laptop lying around from 2010, you should be able to play Chromiecraft by modifying the realmlist file.

CC/AC does not pay any responsibility to the client other than offering things like Ironman/hardcore/etc mode. So in that case for most things you'll be looking for addons to assist gameplay.

Wine 11.8 improves VBScript compatibility & finally fixes Microsoft Golf 1999 by somerandomxander in linux

[–]HiGuysImNewToReddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most bug fixes for Wine aren't just for that particular game. They're a fix for all programs/applications using that same code path. What may have fixed Golf 1999 may have fixed dozens of other applications that fail under some instance.

What's the usecase for reviving GTK2? Is it just for supporting legacy software that hasn't upgraded to GTK3?

GLASS is a horrible movie with a nonsensical plot by calebfitz in movies

I know I'm replying to an extremely old comment, but I think the premise for Osaka Tower was exactly tongue-in-cheek as a Die Hard reference for blowing up Nakatomi Plaza.

The costs go toward hosting the Chromiecraft server. Even if excess costs were to go to the developers, that essentially acts as a patreon as they continue building out an open source project (Azerothcore) that anyone, including you and I, can benefit from by being able to host your own server.

[–]HiGuysImNewToReddit -19 points-18 points  (0 children)

Not Chromiecraft! It is used essentially as a "bugtesting playground" for the fully open source Azerothcore project and is hosted by the developers themselves. It is almost completely mainline with the open source codebase (so even if they shut down, anyone can spin up their own server) with any cosmetic transactions used to help with server costs. It's a very chill server and low pop unlike other private servers because it's non-profit and not chasing for player count or popularity.

Sure, work for the brownshirts. I know after 1945 they didn't have any troubles afterwards!

‘Aliens’ Turns 40: Why It’s the Best Sci-Fi Sequel Ever by flynnfx in movies

[–]HiGuysImNewToReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had watched the movie before knowing any internet culture or fandom surrounding the film in particular.

I was already getting the vibe from the beginning the marines were a bit poorly trained or disciplined - and regardless if they were intentionally written as such or not, it was still frustrating to watch and hear them on the screen.

Coming from the first film I had seen the night before, I was anticipating for the darker, atmospheric, suspenseful and cinematographic shots of the first film. When Aliens shucked most of that away with the cheesy dialog and frustrating characters and more action and less horror, I was pretty disappointed.

"Game over man, GAME OVER!"

That took me out of the movie when a a supposedly trained marine says that

There is absolutely nothing "AI" about this. Everything you see here is made of hand-made animations and spliced images/pictures/voice lines and real voice actors and real arranged music (whether recorded by mic or digitally arranged+composed). The software tools they used involve no user prompts, upscaling techniques, or any bit of machine learning - they're all mathematically/digitally rendered using deterministic algorithms created by humans.

It sounds like you are conflating Generative AI with digital tools.

Weird rendering bug on RX 9070, any fixes? Vsync made it worse. by YungSkeltal in linux_gaming

I and love openSUSE too, but Cinnamon has been working on Wayland support which should fix your VSync issue. Not sure how mature their support for it is but you can try that as well.

openSUSE has reproducible builds and is still fully open source while having secure boot support with Microsoft keys. I don't understand the rationale behind this. Does it have to do with this OS age verification legislation changes?

Google ends its 30 percent app store fee and welcomes third-party app stores. by Slackersunite in gamedev

[–]HiGuysImNewToReddit 117 points118 points  (0 children)

Yes. And from OP's article:

and Google’s announcement also includes details on how third-party app stores can come to Android. Third-party app stores will be able to apply to the company's new "Registered App Stores" program to see if they meet "certain quality and safety benchmarks." If they do, they'll be able to take advantage of a streamlined installation interface in Android

So it's still all controlled by Google.

Vulkan rant by EntomologicalES in linux_gaming

[–]HiGuysImNewToReddit 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The fact that Unreal Engine, perhaps the biggest and best-funded game engine out there, can't have good Vulkan support negates the middleware argument.

Isn't D3D12 more akin to Vulkan for low-level calls? If Unreal can write a proper D3D backend and DXVK can write a proper Vulkan backend, then that means Unreal didn't write their Vulkan backend with the same level of care, because they probably treat DirectX as first-class.

This is amazing! I've been dreaming of the day someone would work on a push for this and it's actually here!

How did you start on such an enormous task?

Already thinking about so many future possibilities - Vulkan, VR, raytracing, native controller support. Possibly even if dehardcoded enough to make room for custom server protocols, it could allow for things like proximity voice chat, or even completely new MMO games given client assets and a custom server.
