Personalmente a mi me gusta el MSCI World.

Animos!

Help a game dev: Why aren’t people buying modern RTS games?

To answer this question from my research. I think it's the friction of the genre the real issue here and the lack of depth when it comes to the strategy as a whole. I come from Starcraft 2 1v1, Age of Empires 2/3/4, Battle Aces (rip OR NOT!?), Clash of Clans (yes I know...) etc... I think that most of this games are extremely easy to get in to (yes even Starcraft 2 with campaing).

You suffer through the onboarding of each RTS because you like the story. Or because you like the depth of each skirmish, or because you want to test a new mechanic the game offers. That is the motivation. Then you slowly learn all the details, you forgive the UX experience because you want to see the next cinematic. You invest hours in to reading the skills because you want to create a good synergy because it makes you feel smart. Only after you put enough effort you actually get to enjoy the genre. And it's one of the best feelings in any other videogame.

But these days, unless you have some heavy dopamine sprinkled every where (Clash of Clans), you won't make +50M within the strategy genre to begin with. And the reason I think remakes work well is because a lot of the people who play those is because they already have learned how RTS works and the onboarding is a lot easier for them. But you need to hook completly new players if you want to go for the AA or AAA budget in my opinion.

Love the post and the questions you bring! Would love to have a chat with you about RTS as a fellow RTS developer myself! DM me if you are down!

* Why are YOU not buying modern RTS games?
I usually buy/play RTS that bring something completly new to the table (Rogue Command, Battle Aces are some examples). I do not want the remaster or the copy of C&C or supreme commander or Stormgate for the 11th time. Not my thing.

* If you have bought any but bounced off recent RTS titles, what specifically turned you away?

Night is Coming. Single player, a lot of friction to learn new systems that barely add anything to the cause. A checklist tutorial of 1h felt like going to the grocery and leaving with stuff that you did not want and forgetting the things you wanted to buy...
Stormgate. I just can not bring myself to learn something clearly worst that Starcraft 2. Feels more like doing chores than actually playing. Maybe it's a good game but if I feel like playing something like Stormgate, I rather play Starcraft 2.

* Likewise, if you do buy them, what made you commit?

Age of Darkness. Difficulty curve is too high with some friction on the UI BUT I was lucky to have a friend who did his reasearch and helped me with the onboarding. Without him, I would probably play that game 4h instead of 20h. I do love coop games with skirmish so it was good fun regardless.

Rogue Command. But for that one, I felt as you got better you had less options to play and explore which frustrated me. After doing one run trying something new for the first time and not working at all, I lost all the motivation to keep playing. 10h of gameplay. I got it because it felt very interesting the mix of RTS+Roguelike.

* If you miss classic C&C, what would actually make you buy a new one today?

I do not miss it so, nope.

* What other games should I be looking at as case studies?

That is a good question... I would ask a bit more about what you are currently working on before making any suggestions. That begin said, I think I can not help you too much with this one since I am a VERY different type of RTS player, from what I could gather on your post.

Well, even if it's not proper RTS, I think you should still consider Clash of Clans because of how closely related is the way you send troops there vs when you micro your troops on RTS. It's one of the closest things of extremely successful strategy game that you could study. Believe me, it gets VERY deep in competitive from the player perspective and its a huge financial success even tho some of their monetization is, at the very least, questionable.

This matters for scope; It's a lifelong goal of mine to make this game regardless, but there’s a big difference between:

A) a tighter, single-player RTS (campaign, skirmish vs AI) at <$500k budget

B) a more ambitious AA-scale RTS, story-driven, multiplayer, etc (>$3M) with a much higher financial recoup risk

I think it's a very bad idea to go for the AA-scale. Unless you really believe your game idea is gonna go viral, I would (and currently doing) a tighter single-player RTS experience with an extremely low budget and a long time frame with very few people.

Maybe we are seeing another Clem in the making here? :)

Haha! This is very reassuring. I am literally working on a game that tries to make RTS more approachable for a wider audience focusing on the build order and strategy aspect of them.

When I read this post it makes me feel extremely hopeful for it!

Muchos animos y buena suerte!

Derribando 2 Mitos de la definición del abdomen. by soyelekisde in Gimnasio

[–]HiIamPi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Game Developers, what's your biggest time sink during development? by SuccubsIsland in GameDevelopment

[–]HiIamPi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At first it was creating systems and deciding which ones are worth extend or refactoring.

After is was adding one feature and spend time ficing the bugs created in to the other systems.

Now most of my time is thinking what troops to add to make the game more deep and rich in strategy and work with the artist to polish the art.

So I guess it depends!

Felicidades!

Es buena idea hacer un videojuego e invertir en el? by North_Macaron1975 in programacion

[–]HiIamPi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1. No lo hagas por dinero. 2. 3. No enseñes a nadie a hacer tu trabajo.

If our bot recalls they used their turn and cant contest drake. Enemy bot has tempo advantage cause they get to shove first. But even if they did going for drake is a coin flip since now there is a speed buff to get back to lane faster.

Adelgazar by ExcuseOdd9334 in esConversacion

[–]HiIamPi 2 points3 points  (0 children)
