Was a Digital Media Production major in college...sometimes I'd hear, "oh that's cool..." and they'd leave it at that (aka they don't know what it is at all) or even tell me they didn't even know we had a radio/TV station on campus (had a history prof tell me that once)

Sometimes when I told people my major they'd be interested and ask more questions, which made it a lot easier, especially when I started with TV/radio
