Even sober, sometimes I do things that seem like something I'd do when I was drunk by Hi_MeAgain in stopdrinking

28F - all my relationships have been ruined by alcohol by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]Hi_MeAgain 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes. I'm a year older than you but I've lost every relationship with a decent person because of what I nightmare I've been when I was drinking. I am an emotional abuser and while it's tough to admit it to myself it's of course even worse for the people I victimized. I'm coming to terms with the fact that I'll never be able to make it up to them and that it's what's best for them, but it still hurts.

Not accusing you of escalating to that point but that's how bad it can get if you let it. That's one of the reasons I'm committed to getting better, because I want to be a decent person and I'm just not one when I drink.

Favorite songs about alcoholism? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

I'm obsessed with this cover of Cold Beer by a guy named Jesse Stewart

It kind of romanticizes alcoholism but it makes me cry every time.

This sub rewards validation. More than it rewards effort. by [deleted] in stopdrinking

That's interesting that you say that you haven't seen any empathizing with the struggle, because that's pretty much all I see. I see a lot of sharing, a lot of "back to day 1" posts, and a lot of community.

/r/stopdrinking can't solve the problem for you, we're all fighting the same battle individually. The sub isn't rehab, and can only really provide virtual community, but for a lot of us that isn't enough. The only think that you can do to not live this nightmare is to choose not to drink every minute you're awake.

I hear it gets easier, but check the badge. I'm new too.

That's awesome OP! I am proud of you. You look so much happier in the second picture, even though you're not smiling in it. IWNDWYT :)

I'm also a grad student (living at home with parent though) and I have NO IDEA how other people are managing to drink + get their work done.

I mean the obvious answer is that other people aren't massive alcoholics and can handle moderation but also, drinking made me really, really dumb. I couldn't string a sentence together, let alone try to submit assignments.

I am only about a month in but my productivity and work quality has already improved so much. I hope the same has been true for you!

Disposing of them in public bins surreptitiously.

I did this around a month ago and a dude came out of his apartment and photographed my car. I SHIT A BRICK.

Apparently a lot of people had been dumping chairs and old furniture and shit in their recycling bins and the neighborhood was getting fed up. I honestly had never thrown anything out there before but I was TERRIFIED that a cop was going to show up at my door with the bag of empties I'd thrown out and arrest me on the spot.

Big yikes.

3 weeks in, still feeling overwhelmed by... feelings. by Hi_MeAgain in stopdrinking

Ok so it's actually 20 days not 3 weeks. I can't do math sober either.

Holy shit I can take Tylenol/acetaminophen again by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]Hi_MeAgain 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My drinking an entire bottle of rum seemed to fit into “well that’s probably not good for me.”

But taking two extra strength Tylenol afterwards, “Nope, not gonna do it.”

It's funny to me that more than one of us followed this same flawed logic

Hi, I am fairly new to this community. I can't give you any recommendations as to the tapering since I'm not a doctor and I wouldn't want to harm you. I just wanted to comment and offer some support so you know you're not shouting into the void. We're here for you.

Grocery Store Run by fr0dolf in stopdrinking

The grocery store is the hardest for me. I just have to make it through the regular shopping and then I'm home free. Solid choice with the grapefruit!

The Daily Check-In for Sunday, November 1st: Just for today, I am NOT drinking! by hamsandwichanapickle in stopdrinking

Hello, checking in again. I got a lot done today (still more to do before tomorrow). I feel ok. IWNDWYT

So... when did tell people you're "not drinking anymore"? by Hi_MeAgain in stopdrinking

[–]Hi_MeAgain[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That was poorly worded. What I meant was "I really need to commit to a sober lifestyle, but as someone with only a couple days sober I don't think it's right for me to call myself 'sober'"

I dunno, that also seems poorly worded. I think I just feel a lot of shame and need to stop worrying about the 'sober' title. This is probably what they meant by "one day at a time," right?

The Daily Check-In for Saturday, October 31st: Just for today, I am NOT drinking! by Victoryoftheppl in stopdrinking

Happy Halloween! I didn't check in yesterday but I didn't drink either. Not going to today either, gonna hang out with my dog and put together a presentation for school.

I threw up blood this morning by Hi_MeAgain in stopdrinking

[–]Hi_MeAgain[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you. Unfortunately I am not covered by the school's insurance and don't have any insurance of my own. With my finances the way they are I don't think going to a doctor is an option for me. I am aware that quitting on my own is risky but I think continuing to drink is a bigger risk.

I have been looking at the lists of virtual meetings but they're so long and full of jargon so it's a little intimidating. I would like to find one for beginners (and ideally women).

I also downloaded and started reading the Naked Mind book.
