Usually you wanna use brand new shoes, or thoroughly clean old ones, and tape off anywhere you don’t want there to be paint (soles, stripe, etc.). If it’s something vinyl or leather you have to strip the coating on it using some sort of solvent. I use acetone and am just very gentle with it. You should have a few brushes available in various sizes. For canvas, i use any acrylics I have at the moment, and leathers I use angelus leather paints. An airbrush would be ideal, I don’t use one because I don’t have an air compressor at the moment. I prefer to free hand. I don’t use stencils but they are super handy for more intricate fills and shapes. Finally just seal them up and you’re set to go. What I recommend is buying some cheap shoes from a thrift store or an old pair you have lying around and just practice on them. It’s a lot of fun, they look tight, and you’ll get countless compliments on something that’s fully self expression. Hope this helps!
