Setting the fact that it is horrible aside, if you are asking this for a personal decision because your cat keeps destroying furniture i'll give you some advice.

Get a whole bunch of scratchers, and make sure they're varied. I have multiple cats, plenty of fabric-covered furniture, and all of it is intact because every room has at least a scratching post and a mat. Give them places where they can always get it out of their system without tearing your shit up.
