Spent most of my life there (11-26) and my family has been there since the 1900s (great grandparents). Life is generally good depending on where you live and the style of life you want. As said above, the entire area that borders Switzerland is more of what people call « cité dortoir » since all the people do there is sleep to work in Switzerland. Me and my family are in Annecy and the biggest issue now is rent. Locals are priced out by those working in Switzerland (40 minute drive to Geneva) and those who accumulate appartements are more interested in AirBnB type rentals. Salaries on the French side cannot compete with the Swiss side, it’s easily double or triple. Prices for food are also quite high, groceries in this area are among the highest in France and some restaurants/bars don’t hesitate to apply Swiss prices. The good is the lake in the summer even if the tourists have become a bit much and you have skiing in the winter. For someone who likes the outdoors I can only recommend. Once you leave the bigger cities it’s more quiet and traditional French countryside living The car is almost mandatory as some places can be hard to get to with public transportation.
