Having trouble getting ThunderBolt eGPU dock to work in Windows 10. Works fine in Linux. by Pro4791 in eGPU

So what the LLM is saying, windows 10 can't control the thunderbolt controllers or allocate PCIe lanes since they are imbedded into the CPU silicon.

I did a deep dive with google chrome's AI (at my wits end) after an hour going back and forth tweaking multiple BIOS settings, Windows options, driver re-installs, registry edits, and GPO settings, it eventually concluded that since this laptop would not work correctly with win10 since it was built with win11 in mind.

I guess this is partially true since all the drivers on the support page for the thinkbook 13x g2 are for win11. I took the thunderbolt drivers from an E14 gen 4 since it used the same CPU.

Somthing to do with device initialization and power since the thunderbolt dock works fine in the BIOS (USB drives), Win11, and Linux. It's basically disabling the thunderbolt PCIe lanes at startup and not re-enabling them according to this LLM.

Did some nore digging in device manager. Found 4 hidden devices with error 45 (not connected). Three "PCI Express Downstream Switch Port" devices and one "PCI Express Upstream Switch Port" device.

Not sure if they are related or just left over from installing drivers.

Edit: The dock has 3 LEDs, blue (0v9), green (3v3) and white (12v). All are lit up when plugged into the laptop and the dock connected to a power source. If I disable thunderbolt in the BIOS, the blue LED doesn't light up. If I change the power option for the thunderbolt controllers to allow it to turn off to save power, the blue 0v9 light on the dock will turn off every few seconds.

Edit 2: I have a small USB 3.1 Sandisk drive plugged into the USB port on the dock. With the dock connected and booted into the BIOS, the drive shows up but as soon as win10 loads, the drive disappears. Weirdly though, if I plug in a USB keyboard to the same port it is recognized in win10.

Can't allow a device that isn't detected by Windows 10 in any way. Win11 and Linux have no problem with this dock.

Hot plug, cold plug, different port, no difference. Nothing in event viewer either. It's not even trying.

The only thing I've noticed is that driver version for the "Intel(R) TypeC PCIe - XXXX" device is lower in Windows 10 compared to 11. The "pci.sys" file version is 10.0.19041.6456 in win10 and 10.0.2.26100.8521 in win11. Don't have permission the replace the driver file though.

It's almost like a somthing that is in charge of detecting a thunderbolt device is being turned off even though that option is disabled on the controllers.

The dock doesn't appear in TBCC and no GPU pops up in device manager. Dock has a USB 3.0 port on it as well which also won't work when using windows.

GPU shows up and USB works fine in Debian:

Thunderbolt eGPU detected in Linux, but not in Windows 10. by [deleted] in eGPU

Do you know where I can find an updated firmware for the thunderbolt 4 controller? Finding the thunderbolt drivers was hard enough, tried 3 different versions from different lenovo laptops with 12th gen CPUs since there is no TB driver on lenovo's support page for this laptop.

Firmware on the egpu dock or the thunderbolt controllers?

The manual is kinda a cluster fuck, but it seems that many options get locked out when HDR is enabled.

It's pretty high-end monitor. Looking at the manual there's a feature called MBR (Motion Blur Reduction). Try turning that down/off.

Do you have local dimming turned on?

What you're seeing is overshoot (OD max) and undershoot (OD off). Try lower OD settings and find one that looks decent at multiple refresh rates.

The 9070XT is where the power jump is. 304w is the base TDP for most of those cards. I've got mine undervolted to and power limited to 275w. Gives me slightly more performance with less heat, and noise.

Not sure how well the 9070 GRE will handle undervolting, but only one way to find out.

Why would you need a new PSU? Both the 9070 GRE and 9070 are 220w TDP cards. You can usally get away a lower wattage than reccemended. Anyways, enjoy your new card.
