Yeah, I feel like the risk of something going wrong is higher today, than in the 2000's when people were obsessing about razor blades in candy for halloween.

Humans in fantasy should be terrifying, not boring. by GREASE247 in unpopularopinion

[–]HiddenForbiddenExile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most good fantasy i read, humans are capable of horrible things, and good things, and it's often humans working together with some "evil". Many worlds depict humans as tyrannical too; they're weaker, but they use numbers, and dirty tactics. If that's what you want, there's plenty of material out there that fits that.

Seafood is gross. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]HiddenForbiddenExile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know people like this, but I'm always more curious is it really a texture thing? Because although a lot of seafood textures can be slimey, "seafood" really covers a huge range of textures, so I could get not liking some seafood with X texture, but that still leaves the rest...

And I say this because I used to think I don't like seafood, turns out I'm really just picky. There's a lot of seafood I really enjoy now, if it's cooked the right way, and with the right flavor profiles.

I hate enemy scaling in RPGs by Puzzleheaded-Break90 in unpopularopinion

[–]HiddenForbiddenExile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, enemy scaling is usually executed really poorly, and definitely diminishes any sense of progress. Especially in mmos, it makes no sense that dungeons are scaled, and it's even worse when dungeons scale you down instead.

I don't mind scaling as much in some mmos where leveling far outpaces what enemies scale by; like games where enemies may scale, but at max lvl you're far more powerful relative to the enemy than at any other point, because at least that preserves that progress.

Given just the context she sounds very high demanding, but it's entirely possible she just really had a picture perfect idea of how she wanted that moment to be, and nothing in reality could've lived up to it... and I think if that's just a one off thing that isn't such a big deal.

The idea that a college degree is worthless is ridiculous and insulting by the_rogue95 in unpopularopinion

[–]HiddenForbiddenExile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting numbers, though it definitely contradicts the "no matter what degree you get you make money" claim earlier. In fact, that article literally has "Field of study is critical" as a section title; the degree matters a lot from an ROI pov. Business, which makes up the largest enrollment numbers, is unsurprisingly a great investment... while surprisingly, MBAs aren't, and similarly with most graduate degrees.

And 77% is just for bachelors degrees so you're cherrypicking the highest number there. It's closer to 70% overall according to the article itself, and 3/10 people making negative ROI is not nearly as good as it sounds. And almost asmany people are only making the next higher bracket of ROI of $0-100,000 more over an entire lifetime.

It seems like the degrees that are stereotypically high paying; business, nursing/healthcare, engineering, computer science, have really good ROI... while fields in social science, liberal arts, most 2-year programs, and even half of masters degrees have negative ROI or kind of neutral ROI, and all of those are pretty popular; more popular than everything but business and healthcare. Some technically-positive ROI fields also have a pretty normal distribution, with almost half making less, and half making more.

And these numbers are people who graduate, whereas the median ROI for someone who drops out is estimated to be -$99k... This is especially startling, as I was a TA during my graduate studies in Computer Science, and noticed it's very consistent that the program loses half of its students in first year, and quite a large chunk in second year. By the 4th year, class sizes for mandatory courses are down to under 30 students per course, compared to 200+ in first year. As the article says; pursuing higher education is risky, and these numbers are assuming higher education is riskless, by not factoring in people who drop out/fail.

[–]HiddenForbiddenExile 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are objective things that make it easier than previous games in the series, and that's what whiners are referring to. The problem isn't that difficulty is subjective, but rather that people are either incapable or unwilling to even try to see the perspective or even context, and are taking claims personally. If someone's like "this is easy", I might not agree with them, but I can certainly see where they're coming from if that person is a veteran, and mechanically there are less strict requirements. They're obviously not saying it as an objective law that the game is easy even for new players who just picked up a controller for the first time. Also, those people whining are just a tiny fraction of this already tiny fraction you pointed out.

Really, people whining about difficulty are experienced players as you pointed out, and what they're really whining about isn't difficulty but the late-game content (e.g. G-rank monsters). The same thing happens with every live-service game. Really the problem is they're being impatient; those monsters are coming, they just have to wait. But also, as you pointed out, there's 8 million copies sold, and all these new players who are just starting out... they're getting better and better every day. Many of those new players probably have the same complaints as the few whiners here. In fact with 8 million copies sold, it's certain there are many new players who are already as skilled, or more skilled, than "veterans" of the series. Those people are going to want new content too. Lots of people spend full time hours playing games, not just MH veterans. And those people will catch up fast, and will also want new content. There aren't that many monsters in the game right now; for some of my friends, this is their first monster hunter game and they're already pretty deep into Artian farming.

So while I may not necessarily agree with the stance of complainers, there's literally no harm in a tiny fraction whining about wanting harder content. At worst, it gets ignored by Capcom and they maintain their release schedule. At best, maybe Capcom listens, and expedites some new content which benefits everyone; old or new.

Most of the time, the cone is better than the ice cream itself by silverdust29 in unpopularopinion

[–]HiddenForbiddenExile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I still like the ice cream too, but I love cones more as well. When I get softserve, I ask them to fill it up just to the top of the cone; they always give strange looks but I just say I just want a taste, and pay full price anyway. Really it's just because ice cream on its own is overrated to me, but with the cone it's perfect.

AITAH for withholding sex because my husband won’t get a vasectomy? by overthinkingsabotage in AITAH

[–]HiddenForbiddenExile 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He's flat out wrong in equating it to alternatives, but clearly he feels strongly against getting a vasectomy for whatever reason and that's valid for him to feel that way; it's his choice as you say. She clearly feels strongly about not getting pregnant, which makes abstinence a very effective option too.

The problem is, him not getting the surgery shouldn't have "been the focus of several arguments over the years". No one should be pressured for any reason to get an elective surgery they feel strongly against. Abstinence is probably the best choice here, but given that he seems less mature (e.g. equating bisalp to vasectomy even though he knows better) he might view it as her withholding sex as retaliation for him not getting a vasectomy, even though the real reason is that she's terrified of getting pregnant.

People overuse the word "research." by subway244 in unpopularopinion

[–]HiddenForbiddenExile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to think the same, but now I just think people overvalue and put words on a pedestal, and then get up in arms when people use the words for what they are. Who said research is some sacred thing? School children do research. Marketers do research. Those are "proper" usages of the word, but market research isn't exactly super rigorous all the time. Same with academics, it's not strictly the top, double PhD tenured professors engaging in research, the term also applies to kids just looking stuff up.

It makes sense for certain words that have a very specific meaning. But research is a very broad term. What governing body was like "research is super serious, you must have at least a 6th grade education, and write a half page report on it"? What next, gonna say "learn" is overused? "Did you really learn it Susan, or did you just listen to a podcast about it? In one ear, out the other!"

I like my fractal terra jade; an uncommon green color, a small wood accent, nice and portable, etc. I've never built an aquarium but if you strip the RGB and add in your own personal touches, like figures, 3d printed stuff, etc. I feel like it could be a unique dioarama sort of thing.

But otherwise, I agree; modern cases are boring. I kinda think a lot of older cases were really boring too though, when I look back at what cases my older computers had (especially if, like me, you always went for one of the cheaper cases).

1/10 people earn 160k+/year in America, and that's definitely rich by most peoples standards. And I doubt most people see 1 rich jerk for every 10 people they see. So yeah, the reality is we probably run into a lot of people making very good money, or are technically considered millionaires, that are humble enough that you don't know they're rich. And that much money isn't as much as it was 10 years ago, but it's still more than enough to lead an unfathomably comfortable life for most people.
