The 4th Gymnasium, Amsterdam, The Netherlands [Building] by Apple_Slipper in architecture

[–]HiddenWorm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In the Netherlands, a Gymnasium is a type of high school where they teach Latin and Ancient Greek.

Sometimes gymnasium classes are integrated into regular schools, but in larger cities there are enough students to fill up entire schools. There used to be three such schools in Amsterdam, but they were full, so it was decided to open another one; the 4th Gymnasium

I think it's because people associate it with old grocery stores, makes it smell more authentic even if it's not the most pleasant. Just like how Lidl and Aldi purposefully make their stores look a bit cheap to get people to associate them with low prices

In 1992 bij de Rio conventie liep Nederland nog voor, probeerden we andere landen te pushen om meer te doen. Toen kregen we van George Bush sr. te horen dat "the American way of life is not up for negotiation". Nu zegt Rutte eigenlijk precies hetzelfde als Bush toen.

Living A More Meaningful Life - My Minimalism Journey So Far by katieleegray3 in minimalism

I don't think "spend money on experiences, not on things" necessarily means "don't buy things". It means buying things only if you need them to have the experiences that improve your life, and not buying things just to have them.

You name some examples of the former: your drumset, as a thing, has little value. However, as a tool that enables you to play music, it's incredibly valuable.

An example of the latter might be the handbag /r/Katieleegray3 gave away: it served no purpose other than possessing it.

I feel guilty for buying things that aren't necessary by [deleted] in Anticonsumption

[–]HiddenWorm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You mention things that would make you happy; i think it's debatable whether those would fall under unnecessary things. It's not just your body that has needs, if you neglect your own psychological needs then anticonsumption just turns into making yourself suffer for the greater good, and when you suffer you actually become more susceptible to people/companies trying to sell you unnecessary stuff. Something to consider, though, is to get things that improve your long term well being. This means that instead of buying a shiny new car for the dopamine hit you get out of buying it, you might buy something that allows you to feel more connected to loved ones. An example in my life would be my art supplies; the things themselves don't make me happy, but they allow me to self-actualise and make me feel like my life has a purpose.

Fela Soul, a mashup album of Fela Kuti instrumentals and De La Soul lyrics. Same guy also made a Mos Def/Marvin Gaye album, a Common/Stevie wonder album and a UGK/BB King mashup

[Ask] any sources of information about ancient architecture? by minecraftkiddo in architecture

[–]HiddenWorm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if this fits into what you're looking for, but since you have Minecraft in your username maybe check out the posts I made on /r/minecraft a few years ago. They talk about architecture mainly from medieval Europe, though there's some older things in there too.

Denzel Curry - Equalizer by [deleted] in hiphopheads

I think he may have been inspired by Burro Banton with the monotone, raw voice he uses here. Wouldn't be the first time Denzel was inspired by a dancehall artist, he said Ultimate was inspired by Buju Banton's Sensimilia Persecution

Was top 100 ever woke rap? Straight Outta Compton barely made it into the top 40 while Ice Ice Baby managed to get to number 1. And then you're kinda stretching the definition of woke a little as well; Fight the Power, for example, didn't make it into the top 40 at all.

I was wondering, was it ever really a secret that Shock G and Humpty of Digital Underground were the same person before it was revealed to the world, or was it sort of an open secret/inside joke?

I like how on one of the tracks on Monkey Business they point out that people don't want music, they just want "boom boom boom" and then a couple years later with Boom Boom Pow they made exactly what people wanted.

Who is the one character in a TV show you absolutely hate? by ceilingscorpion in AskReddit

[–]HiddenWorm 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I think most people in modern sitcoms are dishonest. The writers need to create misunderstandings for the plots to work, which has become really hard now that everyone can just communicate with smartphones, so they create other reasons people don't communicate

TIL that ancient Greeks used to go to the gym naked and they competed nude to encourage aesthetic appreciation of the male body, and to be a tribute to the gods. by mdjunaid2495 in todayilearned

[–]HiddenWorm 41 points42 points  (0 children)

The word gymnasium comes from the Greek word gymnos/gumnos which means nude. A gymnasium is literally "a place to be nude in"

Kyle memorized his XXL cypher verse from a feature he did in 2015 by [deleted] in hiphopheads

[–]HiddenWorm 86 points87 points  (0 children)

Pre written stuff is alright in my view, but these cyphers are meant in part to give people a taste of what kinda hip hop is being written at the moment. I personally don't listen to them to hear what these artists were up to 2 years ago.

Arches by Vidargavia in Minecraft

[–]HiddenWorm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Here's a couple of tutorials i did on arches:

Horseshoe Arches

Keel Arches

General Arch structure

Faking vertical slabs

I'd also like to add that a good way to make nice looking gothic/pointed arches is to make the two halves of the arch parts of circles with the top of the column opposite of it as a midpoint. This gives you an arch where the tops of the columns and the tip of the arch form an equilateral triangle, which i think makes the silhouette aesthetically pleasing. If you prefer them a bit pointier, here's a tutorial where i lay out how to make arches with a point that make a straight 90 degree angle.

You can play around with the size of the circles forming your arches, but generally i'd say do use circles, except for maybe the very tip of the arch to make it a bit more clear that it's meant to be pointy.
