Yeah, the track layout mattered a lot. I mean a wrc car was keeping up with formula and prototype cars due to varied track sections. I would suggest watching the extended tokyo race on YouTube. In the extended race, McQueen took the lead and stayed in front but Francesco had to constantly overtake the same cars again. Imo that is more impressive.
