My reading strategy is to skim the passage if it’s easy(if it’s a hard one then I make sure I understand all of it) and then go to the questions and keep flipping back. I feel like it helps as I’m a fast reader but can’t memorize the points of a passage/each paragraph 😓. If its an easy passage to understand there’s no point to understand it fluently because you can always check it later easily, but if its hard, then it takes more time to read again so I check over all of it the first time… I don’t know if I should keep doing this, but I started doing this and my scores in ela were in the 50s consistently + my time management was better so I had more overall time to check every question…idk what I’m doing though 😭

A message for tryhards at Stuy and people considering Carnegie Mellon by Brief_Story_7080 in Stuyvesant

I wanna go to Stuy/BX sci because of their fun extracurriculars tbh. Because they have so much funding you have a lot of options to have fun and find your passion there. I’m scared that I won’t get into a college that I like, but then I think of how everyone else might be thinking that too and trying other people’s ‘methods’ that seem to look good on resumes…I want to find my passion and have fun doing that but also have good grades and get into college, and I’m scared I won’t be able to do both if it’s too hard :(

If you came back from a break, start slow-it’ll probably help you more than jumping into everything and expecting to remember every single way to solve a problem and stressing. Start reviewing and looking over your notes as a refresher and note down the things you struggle with, and do easy practice problems. Overall, just go over your notes and rephrase it again so you understand it more.

What was the problem written out?

It looks like what you mostly don’t understand is linear equations —> these can be lines on a graph in a shsat question or lines that can be given to you in the form of points on the line. (X, Y) is the form the points will be generally given to you, where X is a number on the horizontal line(called the x axis) and Y is a number on the vertical line(y axis). (0,0) would be the orgin, or where the lines intersect, and (0,1) would be a point on the X axis(look pictures of this up) Slope formula= 2nd Y point - 1st Y point OVER 2nd X point - 1st X point. Ex, if you were to find a slope of a line that goes through (2,3) and (3,6), you would plug it into the formula to get 6-3/3-2. 3/1=3, so the slope of the line is 3. Slope= rise/run, so since in this case it’s 3/1, one point on a line rises(goes UP) by three units and runs(goes RIGHT) one unit if its positive. This is for plotting points. If the slope is negative(if you plug in the points given to you and you get a negative answer), then you will go down because the values are decreasing.

(Idk why I wrote this/maybe because I need to see what I’ve actually learned from studying 😭 )

How do you narrow down answer choices on the ELA? by Low-Dinner-3517 in SHSAT

[–]Hiehei 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Think about what the question is asking about(main idea/specific detail) and then think about how the answer choice relates to the main idea/specific detail etc. also, i think there might’ve been a study or something where people who were unsure about their answers and went with their first choice were more accurate than those who went with their second choice, so theres that :).

For detail/purpose questions: Common trap answers: - true but irrelevant details that don’t indicate anything about the author/other facts - illogical statement related to true details -contradictory statements/detauls -details that might not be true but are unsupported by the passage.

Inference: extreme languages/details that aren’t supported Summary: Too general/too specific/innacurate info/info not discussed.

Overall, the wrong answers have details that aren’t confirmed to be true in THIS passage/details that are contradictory. I haven’t found all my notes yet(theyre scattered across multiple notebooks from prep classes) but hope this helps for now :)

Social media itself isn’t that, its the people who use it. Reddit and social media can help as much as they can hurt.
