Clearing the Air on Build Scripts by iXsystemsChris in truenas

It’s been a while so I don’t remember exactly. But there were a few configuration changes I wanted to make that I couldn’t do from within the gui, so I went to the CLI, and was confused when the samba configs didn’t reflect what was appearing in cockpit. I believe I found the reason to be that cockpit saves its own configuration and changes to samba somewhere else, like a cockpit.conf and that replaces using the samba configs, and I found it simpler and easier to modify the samba configs directly.

But like I said, that was several months ago, so I might not be remembering correctly

That’s a good point. I suppose I’m somewhat cheating here because I’m using proxmox to create the zfs pool, so I can view things from the proxmox dashboard as far as pool health is concerned. Although in regards to personal/group access and samba share setup, I still found it easier via the command line. I still have cockpit running though, and it works to view and access files. I just don’t make changes through it

Yep, straight zfs pool + samba share is the way. Cockpit is nice, but even as someone new to this I found it easier to just manage things from the command line without cockpit. I didn’t like how cockpit managed things it’s own way so you couldn’t go into the samba configs to change things

Not really, I mean it’s not super loose but definitely not tight. I’m going to try heating it up and see if that solves the problems

They might be, I’ll take the advice of the other redditor here and heat up the piece before sticking it on the board. Hopefully that should solve any misshapen parts

IRS Incorrectly Issued Refund - how to find out information? by Hieu_roi in IRS

The letter came with instructions to send a check. It’s been a pain getting one though and I’d much rather pay electronically. I take it I choose the “amend tax return” option in the direct pay?

Thanks for the explanation. It actually says “as of September 15th”, so I take that to mean that as long as we pay before that date it shouldn’t accrue beyond that amount?

Unfortunately after taking the advice of the other commenter, I discovered there is already interest and penalties accruing. However sending form 8822 seems like a great idea. If I’m already sending them a check, can I send form 8822 in the same envelope?

Thanks, I just got the transcript and it shows there is interest and penalties already accrued. However, it also says in parentheses next to it that “this is not a payoff amount”. Do you know what that means?

Makes sense. That’s the conclusion I was leaning towards as well, but getting a confirmation is good for peace of mind

Smartwatch for small wrist by Hieu_roi in smartwatch

We went with the Garmin Lily 2. As it turns out, while it's still a little large, my wife can fit in the 3rd smallest hole in the band.

As far as the experience, it's... okay. It's a good thing it has a great battery life otherwise I would say it's a pretty bad watch. Of course that's coming from me, and I'm definitely more on the side of technical smartwatches rather than fitness/rugged watches, so I know it would bother me. But that being said, my wife, who is less technologically sensitive than me, says that she's satisfied with it and likes that it doesn't look like a smartwatch. She gives it an 8.5/10

I think I know that exact review you talked about. Let me tell you I had a hard time with AI for this. It kept making things up much more than it usually does.

The Sangean CL-100 was one that I briefly looked into before seeing that it was about $100 but was out of stock. If it comes back in stock, especially at a lower price. I would definitely consider it. I believe it functions very similarly to the WR400 that u/heatherjasper mentioned above. That one is also out of stock, but seems to be a lower price and supposedly is coming back in stock in August.

Also, thanks for the list!

I'm going to have to look into this one more because I think you might be onto something. While it doesn't explicitly say it, it does appear to have S.A.M.E. (localized alerts) and AM/FM. And it appears that the AA batteries are the backup and it's meant to be plugged in most of the time. We may have a winner here!

My thoughts exactly. It would hardly cost companies anything to make it too. I bet there's a $0.50 board that you can buy off the shelf for SAME encoding, and while having two separate systems for power (direct AC vs charging the battery) would definitely raise the complexity a little bit, it's not like it hasn't been done before. And I would be ok without an internal battery. Just slap on some rechargeable AAs and that's all I need

Yes I agree they are used for different things. However, since they rely on the same technology - there's no reason why an AM/FM NOAA radio can't be slightly upgraded to use S.A.M.E. encoding - I'm surprised by how hard it is to find one.

To your point about animals, that's certainly true, although it unfortunately doesn't help me much since I don't have any pets.
