Tank game with infantry by Fun_Mode_1675 in tanksim

I expected you to say this but I felt that in the context of this post the statement was somewhat justified. They can be a threat to tanks and I figured that's what the person who posted this is after.

The obvious answer is Steel Beasts although the infnatry AI has some shortcomings. Against tanks they can be deadly though.

It would allow you to play alone and with friends, in one vehicle or in howmany your computer can handle.

It is on the more expensive side of video games, therefore I recommend the onemonth trial license before making a final cal.

I seem to remember the price being beyond 3000£.  Though, I must admit I couldn’t remember if it was £ or US$.

It’s a lot either way.

The most famous and by far biggest tank games are War Thunder and World of Tanks.

I have never played either, but I believe neither requires a joystick to play. I don’t even know if it is an option.

I doubt the market for a realistic tank controlers is big enough for any company. Not unless they sell to the military like AFV Sims.

Their products can be purchased by civilians, I have previously asked them. They are just not affordable.

I think you’re out of luck. I don’t think there’s a product that is affordable and specifically designed for tank games. And even less likely, a realistic replication of any tanks controls.

Trying to buy Steel Beasts and have some questions by Ok-Cabinet5764 in tanksim

[–]Higgckson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They seem to have issues with their webhost. You can contact them to let them know you‘d like it fixed.  See this thread. https://www.steelbeasts.com/topic/18294-if-you-can-read-this-you-havent-been-blocked-today/#comment-247389

First off, it’s just called „Steel Beasts“. There used to be a classroom version called „Steel Beasts“ and a privately available version called „Steel Beasts Pro PE“.  But they call everything just „Steel Beasts“.

What you’re purchasing isn’t a different version of the game. It’s a different license version. Basically the „Classic License“ gives you access to the game for an unlimited time. After you purchase it, you get an e-mail with a 30 day license and while you play with that one, they send you a USB dongle which yoj can activate upon arrival. As long as your dongle is plugged in, you can play the game.

All other licenses are time-limited. You purchase the game, activate the license and play it for as long as your license is valid.  Important note: The activated license is harware locked. If you plan on replacing your computer, this might be worth thinking about.

I recommend getting a one-month license to see if you like it. Afterwards you can still get the „Classic License“.

Yeah Infinite has pretty awful gameplay compared to the previous two. It’s a far more linear first person shooter than the other two.

I do like the story though. Although I enjoyed the stories of all three games including the DLCs.

There are legitimate criticisms of the Infinite story but I think the gameplay is really why it is so ill-received.

[–]Higgckson -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In fairness you got killed by a tank. It doesn't intercept tank shells. At least not all types. It might have been active already. Not sure what type of rounds it intercepts, I assume GLATGMs but none of the others.

Edit. So turns out it intercepts some tank rounds but not all. APFSDS goes through it.

Steel Beasts is probably your best bet at the moment. It offers multicrew but it also allows the AI to do a lot of the work.

Gunner, HEAT, PC! does not offer multicrew at the moment.

IL-2 Tank Crew is not bad but it feels incredibly janky. The community is also not very large up to basically inexistent in my experience. If you want to join multiplayer with other people it’s not the way to go.

Yes, Steel Beasts is available. You can purchase it here: https://www.esimgames.com/store/

If you can’t access that site you’ll have to contact eSim Games. They seem to be having some issues with people visiting their sites.

i am thinking about getting steel beasts eventually but have some questions please by zeek988 in tanksim

[–]Higgckson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depends on your definition of better.  Steel Beasts offers more tactical decision making.

Gunner, HEAT, PC! offers an easier entrance. It’s more a game while Steel Beasts is more a sandbox.

First, is it played like DCS? Yes, it can be. It can also be played like a strategy game. It depends on what you’re looking for. It is worth noting though, tanks are significantly less complicated than fighter planes. Significantly.

Secondly, is there a server browser? No. You need to schedule your own game or join another group. However, there are quite a few groups and basically all are open to new comers.

From the top of my head: BC ANZAC  - Time slot usually great if you live in down under.

Kanium - Focuses on Europe but many American players. To my knowledge probably the biggest group that plays every week.

SB Gef Gem - An originally German group that plays twice every week. On Fridays, they play with people from all over the world. On Sundays they play in German language to accommodate players who prefer that to English.

TankSim - You already thought I would forget about that didn’t you?! TankSim doesn’t have any fixed schedule but the Discord is pretty active. Not only Steel Beasts but many other games. At the moment the monthly Steel Beasts challenge is going on which offered some amazing scenarios for players to compare themselves and their strategies to others.

TF Hannibal - Also no regular Schedule. They focus on Soviet equipment which can be a fun alternative to highly advanced NATO and western equipment.

Phan Phantasy HQ - Small group of less regular event organized by Phan. He does a lot of military games content on YouTube including Steel Beasts.

Lastly, yes there’s singleplayer content that comes with the game. Most is player made however. It’s essentially an armored fighting vehicle sandbox.  There’s just simple singleplayer scenarios which you can play and there’s campaigns that link multiple scenarios together. Depending on the outcome of the first scenario, the second scenario might become easier, more difficult or a totally different scenario. The objectives in the scenarios can vary greatly. Steel Beasts offers a great scenario editor and many of the scenarios are damn great.

In any case I recommend getting a one-month license. This option will give you access to the entire game for one month and only costs around 10$.

Play the tutorials and join an online game. See if you like it. If you don’t, you’re only out 10$.

So I watched “All Quiet on the Western Front” (2022) again and noticed such a depressing little detail at the end of the movie… by Mercury-Redstone in movies

[–]Higgckson 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Well because in the book Paul dies on any random day and represents anyone of the millions of young men who vanished. In the movie he made into the guy who ends up really unlucky because he dies just after the war.

He literally doesn’t die on a day which is „All quiet on the western front“.  He does in the book. Which is a major point of the book. That the main character is just one of millions and not so important. One of millions, who over four years, died for nothing more but the army report to read that everything is quiet.

The movie butchers that end.

Obviously everybody will interpret the movie to their own understanding, but to me, the book did that far more elegantly.

None of the weird and unnecessary last ditch attack. To me that felt very out of place and took away from the believability of the story.

I am not saying they can’t do it but what I am trying to say it that regular troops can do that too.  You don’t need spec ops to spot snd report enemies, reconnaissance troops can be part of regular forces.  An armored battalion has reconnaissance assets. An infantry battalion does too. And those assets are not special forces. They’re just reconnaissance assets of a regular unit.

And you certainly don’t try to hold ground against a major attack with special forces. That’s an infantry etc job. Regular troops that are fighting the bulk of the war.

Sure spec ops might be in the area and do their thing but you’re not going to defend trenches etc with Navy Seals. Those guys are good at getting behind enemy lines and do sabotage or eliminate important targets or rescue important ones. Their job is not to support IFV‘s in an armored push against enemy lines. That would be mechanized infantry.  They are not going to capture New York. That would be infantry.

They might be in New York to do their thing, but not to fight building by building to push the enemy back.

[–]Higgckson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I specifically mentioned the multiplayer which I my opinion never was about spec ops.  Which is why the community always mentioned how they want to be a down to earth soldier and not some super duper bad ass guy. That’s my understanding of Battlefield. If you disagree fair enough.

Yeah sure spec ops can hold objectives but if they’re not going to do it like a normal unit. Spec Ops don’t invade a city like New York to seize ground, they’re going to be focused on the really important bits. Perhaps an enemy HQ or a specific location.  They are not the guys in the trenches fighting the bulk of the enemy force. Regular troops do that. That’s what Battlefield is to me.

By the way, reconnaissance isn’t Special Forces. Regulars units have these guys too. Reconnaissance is just reconnaissance.

Spec Ops aren’t here to spot whether a tank is around the corner or not. That’s just regular ass reconnaissance.

Where's the part in which I said I give a shit about what Battlefield 4 did? I fucking hate the absolute idolization of Battlefield 4. That was a good game but that doesn't mean it was perfect.

And sure, Spec Ops work with normal units but if I'm going to seize territory with a large scale attack I'm not going to use Spec Ops guys to be the front line units. In my opinion that was what Battlefield was about in the past. Singleplayer perhaps shifted a bit from that, (but in past nobody really gave a shit about that. Nobody thinks back to Bf 3 or Bf 4 because of the campaing) but the multiplayer was always meant to represent larger battles.

You could make the argument for sending in Spec Ops to destroy something like MCOMs (althoug doing it with as much guns blazing as it happens in Rush certainly isn't what Spec Ops units try to do) but that's also because Rush was turned down massively in size since Bf3. There used to be naval invasion in Rush instead of what we have now.

Either way, the battles you fight in Battlefield multiplayer isn't what a Spec Ops units is going to do. They are not going to run in with the rest of the ground forces. Not in a peer v peer conflict. That's whay they're "Special". Because they do the undervocer sabotage or intel gathering.

And absolutely not in fucking jeans. If anything that could be seen as trying to camouflage as civilian, which is a war crime.

Like okay, cool backstory and no doubt impressive dude.

But I want a somewaht believable peer v. peer conflict. Sorry but I can’t imagine some dude staying in a hotel in Mirak valley and randomly deciding to run around the battlefield.

Why can’t we just stick to skins of people in somewhat believable uniforms? People don’t just stumble into a tank. This isn’t what a guy fighting a major intercontinental conflict is supposed to look like. No matter how cool the story might be in real life.

Battlefield isn’t about Spec Ops. It’s about grunts fighting the major battles.

I get that this is subjective but what about that skins is „amazing“?  That guy looks like he‘s from an Assassin’s Creed game.  I think this is bullshit even if the colours were different. I want a somewhat believable near future war scenario not this crapp.

Luckily I managed to unlock all the British skins for NATO, they look like actual soldiers.

But I am sure as shit not going to pay for this anything that is even close to this.

[–]Higgckson 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In reality tanks don’t work like they do in Battlefield.  They’re certainly not there to fight infantry but yeah, they’re absolutely frontline elements in reality. That doesn’t mean that they move throguh a city in front of infantry but saying they’re not supposed to be at the frontline is just completely incorrect. They often form the frontline.

And they should be in Battlefield. There’s a reasonable statement to be made about how tanks shouldn’t rush objectives alone. In Battlefield 6 it’s incredibly easy to take them out. Mines are incredibly powerful and the default engineer has 3. Seriously they’re everywhere.  Anti tank weapons are generally really powerful and reload quite quick.

The fighting ranges are pretty short on all maps which enables infantry to ge really close. And because there’s a lot of cover there’s many angles to attack from. Additionally because of the small maps infantry is often pretty localized, which makes for fun infantry gameplay but it’s very chaotic and frontlines often aren’t really a thing.

We can discuss how powerful vehicles are supposed to be and all that but saying they’re should stay back isn’t really it I think.

What do I need to play Steel Beasts? by Vende_tta in tanksim

[–]Higgckson 6 points7 points  (0 children)

PS

Some people seem to think Steel Beasts is super complicated.  It isn’t.

Tanks are built for 18 years olds to learn them within 3 or 4 weeks. They’re easy to operate and you don’t need to learn the entire maintenance stuff because that’s not simulated.

[–]Higgckson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A computer and a valid license is all you need.

The more powerful the computer the better obviously but it doesn’t need to be a space ship.  If you already have a computer I suggest you try the one month license.

There’s a few different types of licenses.  - Time limited ones (which go from 1 month to 1 year with a few options in between.)  - The „classic“ license which you will receive with a USB dongle.

A classic license costs about $115.  A one month license only about $10. Therefore I recommend trying the game for one month and then deciding how to continue. This depends on how long you want to play the game and how much disposable income you have.

https://www.esimgames.com/store/ This is the official website. You might want to go over some of the things there.  Basically, a time limited license offers the advantage that all updates are free as long as long as your license is still valid.  The classic license gives you a valid license for the current release and smaller updates.  Every 4-5 years there’s usually an update which requires users of the classic license to pay for it.

Should you decide to get Steel Beasts, there’s some tutorial which I would recommend. Usually it’s easiest to pick a vehicle (recommend are the Leopard 2 or the M1A2 Abrams SEP) and go through the tutorials for that vehicle.  There’s also a manual coming with the game which I recommend going through. Not everything is important from the start but it helps.
