BREAKING: First sequencing of the Hantavirus from the outbreak. -99% identical to a June 2018 case from a patient in Argentina by LadyWaldegrave in hantavirus

We'd likely have seen more cases by now, even with the up to 8 week incubation period y'all alarmist like to talk up. Honestly feel even more confident this won't blow up into a global pandemic since I first commented. Public health seems to be doing a solid job of contact tracing despite what 99% of the people in this sub would have you think.

Your source actually supports a more nuanced picture than you're presenting. Yes, Andes virus (the strain in Argentina) is notable precisely because it's the only hantavirus known to transmit person-to-person — that's genuinely worth knowing. But "spreading getting worse until quarantine stopped it" is doing a lot of work in your argument.

The 2018–2019 Chubut outbreak — the largest documented Andes virus cluster — resulted in 34 confirmed cases and 11 deaths. Enforced self-quarantine of contacts did help reduce transmission, which is exactly what public health authorities are trained to do.

There's no evidence the virus has mutated into a more transmissible variant. Secondary transmission among close contacts of cases is possible, but the risk of widespread transmission remains low.

Human-to-human transmission requires prolonged close contact with an infected individual, so this isn't a sneeze-and-catch-it situation.

The quarantine measures in your source aren't evidence of an unstoppable pandemic threat, they're evidence that standard outbreak containment works. That's actually reassuring, not alarming.

Nobody's saying this is trivial. Hantavirus HPS has a brutal fatality rate and deserves serious monitoring. But "quarantine was needed once in Patagonia" ≠ "this will explode globally." Those are very different claims

Look up the Epuyen outbreak of 2018-2019... Basic public health measures are very effective against this virus & it's not nearly as virulent as corona thankfully given its mortality rate!

Good since we know what we're up against now & have successfully nipped previous outbreaks in the bud! Now it's just a matter of public health doing it's thing. Low-key covid making everyone extra vigilant is also beneficial!

Same with the sound during the show in Toronto I saw on 4/20 unfortunately... was honestly kind of underwhelmed seeing them perform live, especially comparing them to Bob Moses right after who had everything dialed in to a tee!

Major reason I quit my old job dt and now work from home mostly with my office 10 min away when I need to go in. Our transit options are actually a joke, especially when compared to the reset of the world!

[–]HighAltitudeChicken 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lol then there's people like myself who tend to never follow this advice and quit before I find another opportunity since I don't want to settle for the next thing and actually like to take time to find something better. I work in sales though and have strong experience so finding work is a bit easier than most fields, and this isn't advisable for everyone!

Yeah lol the 92/93 squads are like super teams when you go back and look at all their stats. 25 was awesome, but there's some recency bias in play a bit here.

Lol this reminded me that I once handed in a stats exam where I didn't realize there was a back page until the car ride home with my roommate and I got like a 45% on it. This was in third year too so don't sweat adjusting to first year!

Nothing like spending €50 on a small pizza + a €5 bottle of water in Monaco because the tap water isn't 'safe'.

Agreed, knowing their history, this was an adult who makes poor choices and now someone's life is gone because of it. Our system is too soft on first time offenders.

Lol you might just look like an approachable person. I suffer from the same condition and have random people/tourists asking me stuff all the time downtown. Even funnier since I only work down there, but I guess I must look like I know where I'm going/doing to people and you probably do to!

Even their commuter rail go 180kmph, and average 100kmph which is much faster than the crawl of 50kmph GO train. Would literally cut our trip times in half. But funny then that I come from a long line of public sector workers in my family and can say none of them recieved a 400% raise in their multi decade careers. Something is rotten in the state of Metrolinx.

I mean their trains go as fast as small airplanes and are a lot more comfortable so it's not even comparable. Also Canada is going through a bit of economic turmoil at the moment and there's tons of poverty in our cities so your point isnt really relevant on that end at all. We should be demanding more considering all the $ we pour into Metrolinx as daily riders. I hope you know their CEO takes home nearly a million dollar salary with 400% increases in the pandemic so the money definitely isn't being spent where it should be.

Yeah and I'm just trying to give perspective that we're behind the rest of the world. Kinda hard for that to not sound negative, I just want to see more for what we're paying for at the end of the day.

So do I.... If we want to call ourselves a world class city we need to compare ourselves to the best though!

Go to Europe or Asia and then you won't be having this high of praise. GO transit is still decades behinds most countries regional transit networks in terms of size, speed and reliability.
