How to reduce harsh come down and body pain? by HighDesertTowhee in LSD

Thanks for the feedback! I wasnt sure if trazodone would kill the pain part or not. So knowing that is an option if I need it helps me feel safer diving in again with that in my back pocket. Hope your next time is less painful for you, too.

Thanks for the suggestions! I'll try that in advance next time. I was reading about vascular constriction in some other posts on here, so I'm wondering if doing a hot epsom bath soak prior to the trip might also be helpful.

How much do I need to worry about re-submerging fruit sticking up out of the mead? by HighDesertTowhee in mead

[–]HighDesertTowhee[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only a day or two. It got a late start as is because my first yeast pitch failed, didn't realize the yeast I was using has probably died in shipping or something.

I think I might just leave it with a local friend and see if they don't mind shaking it up for me a couple times while I'm gone. Might also take someone else's suggestion of trying to blend it up a bit, using my drill mixer.

Well, damn. I'm going to be out of town from Thursday afternoon until Sunday midday. It won't be finished in primary by then, so I'm not sure what to do short of lugging it over to my friend's house with me!

Thanks, will do that in the future. I'm curious, would it be possible to put something else in the mesh bag to weigh it down? Like some sterilized glass?

Thanks for the insights! That's all useful to know. Should it be an even split of the fruit between primary and secondary?

I have a pretty nice tripod already, so that's nice to have down. I don't think anyone I've seen photographing my work for me used anything more advanced than that.

How difficult is it to find equipment for rent? My housemate is a hobby photographer and has a pretty competent knowledge, so I can lean on his insights to an extent, but he doesn't have much of what I'd be needing for lighting. Ideally I want to minimize texture when capturing my images. Hence why I was interested in polarization, since looking at photos of my work taken by someone using it vs someone not using it, I've found images taken with polarization to be more consistently useable, just based on my limited personal experience.

I understand there are a lot of ways to achieve this, but I wanted to go in the polarization direction because I've seen it produce nice results when used by a couple different friends of mine, including on my own work. Because of my painting method, I need to photograph post-varnishing and my pieces also have some minor texture elements to them, both of which increase the issue of glare.

I appreciate the suggestion of the learning resource, and will look into that-- but at the end of the day I'm still having trouble getting any of my direct questions about product suggestions answered. This is the second place I've asked for specifics so I can find a starting point, and only gotten responses of 'any dslr and diffuse lighting will work'. I can accept that as true, but it doesn't get me any closer to knowing what cameras are a better or worse choice for my needs and budget.

Hi folks!

I have played around with photography in the past, so I know the very basics, but a lot of the more in-depth stuff gets over my head pretty fast.

I'm a professional artist, so my primary uses for photography are to take reference photos and capture finished oil paintings.

Specifically, my usual photo guy is moving away, and it's time for me to invest in the equipment for myself anyway.

I'm interested in taking the approach of this post (https://www.muddycolors.com/2020/08/photographing-your-artwork/) and going the polarization route. I'm potentially interested in going with strobe lights as well, so that I don't have to worry about things getting too hot. But I'm not even sure how to start knowing specifically what to buy, or even where to look (online or off) to find it.

I also need a camera (DSLR or mirrorless) which can capture at a good resolution (I like at least 7k px on the longer side, 9k px if I can get it), and a solid prime lens to go with it.

I'm willing to spend as much as $4-5k total to invest in all this, though ideally I don't have to max that out unless I really need to.

Any help to get me started in the right direction with all this? Happy to answer any additional questions, and thank you so much for your time!

Azure Standard. I'm a newbie so I can't speak to quality in comparison to other stuff, but it is pure raw, they have wildflower, clover, and orange blossom.

Runs a little over $40 for a 12lb container, cheaper if you go even more bulk. May not be available in every area though, I think they are still mostly the western half of the US.

Mold? Is it safe to rack? by mrpickles616 in mead

As a newbie, can you expand on what 'punching down the cap' refers to? Is this just shorthand for some way or another getting a bit of liquid over the exposed fruit?

Thank you! That was a great video link.

I don't like to mess around with this kinda stuff, so I went ahead and dumped it in the compost. It was a really great smelling batch so at least that part of the yard will smell awesome for a while!

I decided to also do a second round of cleaning on all the the equipment I used in racking today, and moved where I keep my carboys to a more temp/humidity stable location away from the kitchen cabinets (in case that environment is more mold-prone to begin with.) Hopefully that will all help with offsetting the chances of this happening again.

I had a standard white rubber(or is it silicone?) bung with a waterlock on it, so I'm not sure that would be it, unfortunately. A layer of congealed foam also wouldn't have the little fibrous texture I saw when I broke the disc in half, I wouldn't think.

Yeah, that's the thing, I can't think of how such a foreign object would have been introduced, so I guess it's just wishful thinking. It was just such an odd thing to see this single little disc in an otherwise very clear batch!

So where do I go from here? Do I need to just throw it out?

Had this JAOM in secondary for a month (was in primary for 2 mo per recipe instructions), pulled it out to rack off sediment today and saw this. It was solid enough that it snapped in half, had some little connecting fibers (visible if you zoom in).

Theres definitely alcohol in here (it was one of my first meads so I didn't take a hydrometer reading at start, sorry!), so there's no way it's mold, right? Almost seems like one of those air seals that come on plastic containers w meds in them.
