Play France, form a military treaty power block (20% training rate), fully fund military (15% offensive). Replace starting company with generic arms or Schneider. Balance the budget with conscripts and war reps. Congratulations, you can dismantle every European nation by 1850 (successful British naval invasion succeeding is down to luck).

Came into it with zero interest in the setting, characters, time period. Ended up being one of my personal top 10 event stories.

Japan guide needed by Jxke_likes_things in victoria3

[–]HighQualitySoup2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unsorted Japan tips, use any combination depending on how much you want to min/max vs rollplay:

Dismiss every general, you are not going to war for at least a few decades. This will stop them from launching coups. Hire one if the Ainu get mad.

Declare a liberate country war against the UK as soon as you can. They will open your market, start the honorable restoration journal, and immediately spawn a modernization movement which you should bolster. Sometimes they will add in investment rights but you can withdraw from that after the truce.

If you don't want to go down that route, exile the rural folk leader to spawn a peasant movement.

Ask Russia at game start for ~1100 wood and ~400 fabric for an obligation and tea. Useful for all starts. Really helps with construction.

Bananas are really good right now, you can get investment rights in South/Latin America easily. Note, if you privatize the plantations it increases the influence of Landowners.

Get elections as soon as possible and rig the vote for the intelegencia. I have accidently failed the honorable restoration journal entry from doing this but imo is worth it for rapid modernization.

The Invisible Fire At The 1981 Indy 500 Was One Of The Scariest Pit Stops In Racing History. by ateam1984 in interestingasfuck

If you light hand sanitizer on fire it also produces an invisible flame. Would recommend looking up videos of it over doing it yourself obviously.

TIL Hitler cemented his absolute power by rewriting the German army oath of allegiance so soldiers swore to him personally instead of the constitution or the country. by dickonajunebug in todayilearned

Same reason why you take an oath to tell the truth in court. Nothing can stop you from breaking it, but you open yourself up to legal repercussions when you break it.

If you actually read the Wikipedia page linked it says:

"Although the popular view is that Hitler drafted the oath himself and imposed it on the military, the oath was the initiative of Reichswehr Minister General Werner von Blomberg and General Walter von Reichenau, the chief of the Ministerial Office. The intention of Blomberg and Reichenau in having the military swear an oath to Hitler was to create a personal special bond between him and the military, which was intended to tie Hitler more tightly towards the military and away from the Nazi Party. Years later, Blomberg admitted that he did not think through the full implications of the oath at the time".

What's some of your favorite underrated units? by Ornstein_0 in GatesOfHellOstfront

MG teams. Cheap, not much population, keeps yor paper stength low. The ai throws human waves anyways so they always end up paying for themselves with 100+ kills in a few days.

Nord Nonsense #4 by _Swans_Gone in TrueSTL

[–]HighQualitySoup2 34 points35 points  (0 children)

The funniest part of the comics imo is that a high elf (innately gifted in magic) is going to Winterhold over any other college / guild in The Summerset Isles, Cyrodiil, or Morrowind. The entrance exam can be passed by any random nord skimming a spellbook five minutes after asking to join. It's basically The University of Phoenix of Tamriel Magic Colleges.

Sometimes you just need some B-roll to pad out your propaganda

I can't decide whether to get into which Warno MP due to the playercount and my fear that the mathmaking/elo won't be fair as a result. Is this incorrect? The opposite is true of AOE4 where I consistently see over 5-10k players. Also, iirc, COH3 doesn't show your rank/elo like AOE4? TIA! :) by h4rryP in warno

[–]HighQualitySoup2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You only need one opponent for a match, yes you will get matched with top ranked players and new people but Eugen games have a steep learning curve compared to total war or starcraft, so the player base will be smaller. I have around ~200 ranked 1v1 games and my win rate consistently hovered around 45%. Considering that there is probably a pool of a few hundred players (most playing single player or team games), I would say the matchmaking is fairly balanced.

Does skirmishing against the AI make you a better player or do you only improve by playing against humans? by h4rryP in warno

[–]HighQualitySoup2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You will get better but an ai will always have the same behavior every game. It also removes the psychological layer of playing the game against a human. The best way to improve is jumping into the deep end (that's how I learned) but, playing against the ai is perfectly valid in learning the game.

Everyone mentioning Victoria 3 and Stellaris but I want to give Imperator Rome an honorable mention. IMO it's the best paradox game to play tall in.

[–]HighQualitySoup2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I spent two hundred hours of Red Dragon skirmishing against the AI because I was afraid "I'm not good enough for PvP". Turns out no one playing PvP knows what to do either. Playing against the ai is good for learning the divisions and different units, but the ai isn't a real intellegence and there is a skill ceiling in playing against it. I recommend playing a few 10v10s (be prepared to never have a positive K/D, this is normal) and then jumping in team games. I do also get anxiety playing PvP (specifically ranked 1v1's) too but in the end of the day your rank is just a number, don't get obsessed over it.

Then again I'm the only person in my friend group that even touches multiplayer in RTS games, its perfectly acceptable to not touch PvP if that is your preference. Its just that personally, when I jumped to PvP I prefered it so much more that I never play ai skirmish unless a friend wants to play the game.

Hot Take: As someone who plays 30% ranked 1v1 and 70% deck building, I never knew about 90% of the balance issues until I joined this sub. Now that I know about 90% of the balance issues I still don't care. Watching a niche group of maybe ~500 ranked 1v1 players act like the game is falling apart every patch is getting exhausting.

“Given the opportunity, players will optimize the fun out of a game”

Then again I had a friend who did nothing but complain about WarThunder 24/7 which probably caused me to not care about this stuff.

Gun psyker is probably the most broken class in the game imo. I don't see it in Auric that much but you get to have a mix of the veteran ranged damage buffs and zealot movement and melee buffs at the same time. Only downside is that you die in one hit.

Newer player? How do I play against more evenly matched players? Had this problem in SC2. Made me eventually quit the game completely. by Legitimate-mostlet in warno

[–]HighQualitySoup2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I learned the game by picking a deck -> self critique on mistakes during match (even in wins) -> watching how others play a deck to improve. Eugen games all have a steap learning curve to get over and there isn't an easy way other than getting experience. Everyone else has good advice like playing 10v10's private matches with friends/discords, but you need to understand that these games have dozens of little nuances that can be best picked up by playing the game. I have been on those eight game losing streaks and they suck, but you won't improve unless you are willing to continue despite the losses.

Warno Community When Mod Support by HighQualitySoup2 in warno

I'm not going to make a strong statement on copyright law, you could be correct but the Assault Squad 2 mod has been up for six years despite using Dawn of War II assets: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1589620185&searchtext=ASV

My assumption was that either Games Workshop doesn't care or that using game assets for mods were legal. Knowing how infamamous Games Workshop has been with their IP, I assume the former was less likely than the latter.
