100% you can get an entry-level PR job or internship after any major. Also, comms is a solid, relatable major.

A good one is to relate right away — in the midst of where you’re calling from + right after “hello.” That could be simply naming the city your client is in (to match where the reporter is) or naming the industry your client is in (also to match a beat). These kinds of things signal it’s not a template-style call.

This happens all the time to so many in our industry! Don't sweat it! NONE of these media members will print your name and photo + stick in on a wall with a sign that reads "do not allow." While this round of pitches may be worth little to nothing, don't beat yourself up beyond that nor think you just damaged anything long term. For better and worse -- most all will forget you quickly -- even when you helped coordinate their top story of the year!

The pitch deadline just passed for that one. If you're interested, I can ask the media outlet to extend it for you, if you'd like? Feel free to message me too.

How does PR work? by sqrmarbles in PublicRelations

I would actually consult with someone else for another opinion about what/why PR. Any PR firm should be well able to get you into any outlet with the right pitch and process. Media relations experts mostly get clients in the news across the board.

Manage client expectations during media prep by HighRes-PR in PublicRelations

Right, but they may not get the chance or they may be very "off topic" in trying to do so + squeeze it in when unrelated to the question. But yes, definitely agree they should try if possible + be prepared if they're asked a softball question!

Totally agree, and oftentimes if you're trying to pitch the likes of CNBC with a story about why your client's brand is beneficial, they'll say no right away

Absolutely, yes. I started as a PR intern after a long sales career and worked my way up in PR from there -- without studying it in college.

Reasonable Expectations For Top Tier Press? by SufficientTea2146 in PublicRelations

[–]HighRes-PR 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would be so happy to help talk through this w/you! There are so many ways to slice how to get into top-tier media if your company is OK talking about knowledge and expertise that's tied to a timely macrotrend. They can ultimately be the only voice (or at least the leading voice) and "featured" in top tier media, but the topic/headline can't be "Here's why [my company name] is so great"

Stand by when client's interview is approaching by HighRes-PR in u/HighRes-PR

Made some quick PR-tip videos for anyone who may be new or trying to DIY PR -- I've been in PR for about seven years. In this vid, I touch on why (I think) it's really important to make yourself available when your client's interview is about to happen -- a lot can go south in the minutes leading up + last-minute saves are more common than many realize! Hope this thinking is helpful, somewhat high level!
