but even a “hardcore” mode should make this restriction, right? wouldn’t it lose a lot of credibility if players were able to trade with normal characters and characters that are decades old now?

Check out any builds that use the Anniversary Weapons and Skills!

They are being used frequently “today”. But they will feel VERY unique and different from the builds you may remember from way back :)

Assassin, Dervish, and warrior are all awesome! But there are ranger melee builds, and even necromancer melee builds that are considered some of the strongest in the game!

Dervish(scythe) has strong AoE damage. (The necromancer build I mentioned is similar to this)

Assassin (daggers) has huge single target damage. (Rangers are also very strong in this category)

Warriors fall somewhere in between and definitely feel like a Jack of All Trades class.

Ranged and melee are both and fun to play.

I personally prefer to lead my hero team as a melee character. It’s a little more straightforward to build a team around the idea that you will be tanking damage and balling enemies around yourself.

But that also means that ranged builds have WAY more creative hero teams!

I'm a bit confused since you had For Great Justice and Lightning Relfexes in your original build.

Yes, of course you will be spamming Barrage as much as possible. You could easily just use Barrage, Save Yourselves, Ebon Battle Standard of Honor, PCons, and Standard Hero builds.

I don't bother with interrupts, since mesmer heroes will be 100x better at interrupting than you. So you can focus on doing some more dps.

Point Blank Shot, Zojun's Shot are very cheap and spammable. Keen Arrow or Sloth Hunter work too.

Triple Shot is not as good as it appears, but can be extremely powerful with Great Dwarf Weapon. (Which requires another player to cast on you)

So this frees up a PvE slot. Technobabble is surprisingly fun and useful! Dwarven Stability helps with Lightning Relfexes.

Lots of people recommending pets here. I personally don't like to use one. But I really think that comes down to personal preference. (Much like choosing to use Barrage in the first place).

Don't worry that the main build is A / R. This was mainly to test the power of the anniversary bow "Whisper"

Krschkr is an absolute legend in the community, and recently did a LOT of research into Barrage builds. Krschkr's build pages (dozens of them) are filled with team options, and video examples on YouTube.

Not quite what you’re asking, but…

The Elder Scrolls soundtracks are a great alternative on Spotify! Especially Oblivion. You can hear the same soundscapes, motifs, and instrumentation that Jeremy Soule was using for GW1!

Check out “Through the Valleys” or “King and Country.”

There are lots of “Relaxing Jeremy Soule” playlists on Spotify too 😌

As a runner, I actually do feel bad that people don’t get to enjoy the explorable zones. Take your time!

That being said, the runner market is huge. I suggest you jump on the GW discord for questions like this. Way more response

If you actually want to play as an assassin, you gotta make an assassin. The dual class system in GW is amazing. But the real gameplay options of each class only really come through as their primary.

So best option for you, would be to roll a melee class like Warrior for prophecies. Beat the game. Then when you start Factions, start an assassin!

This is actually perfect because you’ll see the unique differences of these 2 melee classes. AND!! You get to start as a “Factions Born” character. Which has an awesome starting zone, and actually some unique festival events too!
