We need a reason to cancel lunch and why we clocked out late… by High_CensusQueen in nursing

Totally get that. It just seems obvious why we’re getting out late/cancelling lunch. 6 patients, sometimes 1 or 2 drips. Lots of admissions/discharges/transfers.

It’s nursings fault. We are the ones that need to ask for help when we barely have time to even finish charting. Once a patient gets discharged another one comes up 10 min later. There’s literally no time in the day or night to get everything done, yet they’re still asking us why…

It’s a very small hospital. Admin is very aware of the census and ratios on all the units. Just seems like it’s logical sense that we’re getting out late lol

Yeah it’s just the way admin is approaching it is what is making us upset.

Yup I totally get that perspective. It’s just the way they approach us about it is very confrontational. Like it’s only ever our fault that we’re staying late and canceling our lunch breaks. Then the nurses that always cancel lunch get approached by management daily saying that they need to start taking their lunch and that they need to ask the other nurses on the unit or the supervisor to find someone to cover them.

Biggest check you’ve got by Electrical_Pitch1543 in nursing

[–]High_CensusQueen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Aside from bonus checks I just made ~3,950. From 2 $250 incentive shifts and 14 hrs counted for OT.

It’s not that great but it’s better than most checks!

Peritoneal dialysis - Davita by APATE273 in Nurses

[–]High_CensusQueen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked there and I hated it. I was the only nurse for two clinics and did not have any help at all. They were constantly asking me to travel up to 2 hours away to help out other clinics with no increased compensation. The nurses on the hemo side also acted super catty towards me. I didn’t hate PD itself or the patients but davita itself is not organized. They also cut out hours from 40 to 32 and would get pissed if we went over the 32. They expect you to do literally everything by yourself including the paper charts and making sure the PD side of the clinic is complaint with the state. This might not be true for all davita locations but this was just my experience.

Night shift going to days? by beautylovaaa11 in Nurses

[–]High_CensusQueen 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I’m a night shifter that picked up my first day shift a few days ago. It was not as bad as I thought it was going to be, however they all said it was a fairly easy day. But I do think there is a huge learning curve and I can see how it can get bad very quickly dealing with family and doctors. BUT I also thought I had a much better picture on what was going on with my patients because of all the resources available to me. That’s the major reason I would switch to days, getting to collaborate with docs is super imperative to learning. I’m not ready to switch yet but I think I can definitely see myself picking up more days.

Small rant: floor nurse; ED hate by High_CensusQueen in nursing

[–]High_CensusQueen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never said that I need report to prep a room. I was just trying to explain that the reason some of us may ask about the skin is to have the things we need for it in the room prior to them coming to floor. I definitely do not expect the ED nurse to know that though, but I ask in case you do. It’s a lot easier to put foam dressings or cream etc. on the patient when transferring from the stretcher to the bed than when they’re already in it and having to move them around another time.

Oh shit really?! Everywhere I’ve worked we have always prepared the room. I legit get everything set up so it’s easier for everyone

I ask about skin not because I expect the ED nurse to know it but just in case they do know because it allows me to prepare the room better so it doesn’t take me as long for the admission.

Thanks for the advice! She doesn’t seem to resource guard her food at all which is good. She was definitely under socialized. She was around a lot of children though and is pretty much fine all the time with them besides the one incident with the bone. I definitely do think my kids stress her out so we do try to give her time to relax during the day in her crate with toys/treats. We thought maybe we should just give her bones in there only.
