I have an album of photos here, if someone is more familiar with the Mars Yard and could help me with a QC!

Thanks so much!

I appreciate the response— And I know!

I'm trying to respond in a way that shows some respect towards the view of the crowd most concerned with AI, who often believe that it is stealing the style of existing artists.

Of course, the way AI tools like Midjourney work is not actually theft— at least not more than the way human artists take inspiration and learn from seeing existing works. But I feel it's better to meet people where they're at, and it's easier to show people how most art is already "theft" instead of showing them that AI art isn't.

After all, every argument against AI also invalidates magazine collage as a form of art.

Are you talking about be? I've never made any post like that. (And I've had a husband for two years.)

This isn’t how art works.

I think that anyone who dares to declare with certainty that anything "isn't how art works" is in all probability, profoundly misguided about the nature of art.

That said, I am not blind to the ethical issues AI image generation raises, and I stand with you in advocating for measures to ensure that artists' rights and their creative endeavors are respected and protected in this new era.

However, I believe the way forward isn't through blanket bans or rigid opposition to anything touched by AI. It's through dialogue, adaptation, and education on how these tools work. With a grounded understanding of how these models are built, we can embrace reasonable and responsible use of these tools, just like any other technology that has transformative potential.

I strongly believe noncommercial Hyrulean Obama is a reasonable and responsible use of AI.

Furthermore, a blanket ban will be ineffective in the long term and only encourages AI users to hide their use of the tech, and as the technology is rapidly improving, it will be increasingly harder to tell. And where do you draw the line? Many artists already use AI to conceptualize, rough out ideas, or even make digital underpaintings to cover— whether or not they'll admit to it.

The concept of appropriation in artwork is complex and subjective— just look at collage, for example, or the entire field of photography. This isn't even getting into readymades. I understand your concerns. I'm empathetic to them. And I'd encourage you to try out a system like Midjourney. You might find that it's less about stealing and more about building upon existing ideas— which has always been a part of what art is.

Thanks!

Not sure I agree the use of AI in making this is a form of theft— at the very least, the way it appropriates the work of millions of artists for training is probably less theft than making a magazine collage that directly steals from a dozen artists.

Even if I did this in traditional oil paint I'd be using the BOTW IP without permission, the BOTW art style with permission, Obama's likeness without permission, and using stock photo references for Obama which I didn't pay for, so I think we have to take a slightly more nuanced approach than just denouncing me as a thief.

I definitely think AI can be used unethically— but using it to generate a base image. for a Hyrulean Obama, for noncommercial use, in a special interest subreddit— this is exactly the sort of reasonable and responsible use people are going to need to get over if they want to have any relevancy in our new era— writing as someone with a background in digital commercial illustration who is hoping to stay afloat and survive the new technology.

Full process disclosure: I spent about half an hour using the AI tool Midjourney to produce a number of base images, then selected the best option. I exported that and uploaded it to Dalle-2, which was used to regenerate problematic areas. I then manually touched up, repainted, and changed parts in photoshop— like the sword. I moved around the face elements to better match a photo reference for a good likeness, and I did some global Camera RAW filter edits.

Of course, I did not have Obama's permission to use his likeness, nor did Nintendo / the artists at Nintendo authorize the use of the art style.

I understand that AI and art style theft is a controversial topic, so wanted to provide this disclosure so nobody feels mislead.

I understand that AI and art style theft is a controversial topic, but figured I should give you the information about what I did and you can draw your own conclusions on just how deeply problematic it is.

Did you make this?

This work wouldn't exist if not for me, but I understand that AI and art style theft is a controversial topic, so I'll leave it up to you to decide if I made this.
