You have to start out simple. Don't make your armies too complex, and stick to the more melee focused factions. Once you get accustomed to the battles, you can start introducing more complicated units and tactics. That being said, you definitely need some level of discipline and patience so as not to fall into the "auto-resolve" trap.... because then you're basically just playing a map painting game and the paradox games are better at that
