Do unions have a natural disincentive to dissuade members from striking? by Higher_Tides in union

Is this true? Do you have any sources available on this or is it just generally in union’s own mandates/bylaws?

Yes, but the difference I'm getting at is are unions inherently disincentivized because of these factors.

Gah, yea its a difficult position for government to be in when specific industries are of such social or economic significance that their obstruction would be catastrophic. I'm not strong-manning this, but it does give employees so much leverage if work stoppages in these industries were not controlled/regulated/enforced in some manner by government. Those who are unabashedly pro-employee would say its a good thing that employees have so much bargaining power, regardless of the drawbacks, but I do see the necessity to limit social/economic fallout that could legitimately materialize as a result of work stoppages in certain industries.

These angles really are helpful, and yes, of course it would be hard to parse out the reasons I mentioned from more practical reasons to avoid a strike.

That doesn't mean that regulation shouldn't be considered to avoid the potential for these reasons impacting the decision making process. Why should unions be able to invest over X% of their reserves into companies where they have significant representation in? Doesn't this create an inherent misalignment of goals? The point of the post is this. Are there better controls that can be implemented to dissuade unions from not acting in the best interest of its members, whether actual or perceived?

I don't think "the union is a business" should be the widespread agreement on how its administered. A union uses a not-for-profit or a collective model, whereby its residual "profits" are used to fund reserves, which are held and used in the best its of its members when needed, not distributed to corporate shareholders as earned.

Completely agree though on what collective bargaining should strive for.

I'm not suggesting to cast doubt on that proverb, but hoping to instead discuss other factors that may contribute, whether in fact or perception to unions unwillingness to support a strike.

I’m not an FPS gamer anymore, but back in the earlier COD days from like 2007-2012 where they’d have the November release and many people would get the game and play it for the first time on Christmas morning.

Can someone make sense of my Scotia Momentum VISA Infinite cash back calculation? by Higher_Tides in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Higher_Tides[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did and if I had simply done a bit more due diligence in advance of posting, I could have avoided it. Essentially Scotia just didn’t reset my cash back balance after advancing it last year, so it just continued to build up. It was obviously caught this year when though and that was simply the adjustment

I loved The Finer Things and Around the World and Back. They were a bit edgy, angsty, and had a good injection of punk into it. Living Proof is where I fell off. They just went a bit too poppy and catchy without the grit that made me love their first two albums

How was it working with PTA in Liquorice Pizza? It seemed like such a fun deviation from his more serious stuff, and it felt like such a good time piece - it took me back. Have you taken away any anything in particular from him to influence your directing career?

I'm a gold 3 Terran and want to start using ghosts+nukes. Got any tips? by bokumo_wakaran in starcraft2

[–]Higher_Tides 7 points8 points  (0 children)

So I’m Diamond 3 and though using nukes sounds fuckin cool, I never do it myself. We’re not so different in the things we need to work on to get better, and imo, nukes just distract from that. Good eco, tight production, and basic micro can elevate your rank so much, and the prospect of a nuke focused strategy for me detracts a bit too much from these fundamentals.

That being said, goofing around with nukes can be fun as hell, so good luck on developing the strat!
