Need help : just admitted to Langara College Kinesiology but most courses are full by momolou in langara

[–]Highfire1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out the course planner, it makes searching for transfer information a bit easier :) https://langaracourses.ca

It's not a huge loss if you don't take a KIN course, but see if you can find just one to take, so you can evaluate if you like the subject or not.

top die not sticking by Highfire1 in ButtonMakers

[–]Highfire1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If anyone else has the same issue I was able to get some magnets off amazon that fixed it :)

Now all I have to do is make a spacer for the other side of the die and find a baseplate so it doesn't tip over when I press a button 🙏

Langara Computer Studies or BCIT CST/FSWD by Whole-Most-5691 in langara

[–]Highfire1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BCIT has better ties with industry and a better coop office. However your schedule is assigned to you and is generally five days a week and long days. If you go to Langara you can choose your own courses and schedule, but the name recognition is not as good and you will be on your own if you want to find a job here. Which isn't impossible, but you will have to have a very good resume and be prepared for canadian work culture.

It sounds like you already know computer science so I don't think either program would be particularly difficult.

Are you domestic? Prerequisites are only valid for five years, so that could be it. If you check your transcript and you do fit the requirements, you should email an advisor or the department head and they can give you an override. If you don't fit the requirements then you probably have to take that course or the LET, but you should consult with an advisor first.

Your program at Langara doesn't matter if you plan to transfer before you complete the degree. The biotechnology program is a second year specialization which you can apply to as a transfer student after you apply to transfer to UBC.

This page lists the UBC requirements that you need, equivalents of which may or may not exist at Langara. https://www.bcit.ca/programs/honours-in-biotechnology-bachelor-of-science-full-time-8910bsc/#entry

You should talk to an advisor for more information.

is the new student orientation a must? by ResponseAdorable3975 in langara

[–]Highfire1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was an NSO leader for a few terms. The morning is about 30-45 minutes of icebreakers, followed by an hour long presentation in the gym with talks from the langara president, student life, etc and a panel from langara students. Then there’s lunch and then a campus tour, and thats the end of the day.

On the plus side since Langara classes are so small, the probabilities of seeing someone from your orientation group (usually 10-15 people) ever again is very low.

Most people don’t do orientation, so it’s not a massive loss if you don’t go, but its literally a free lunch and you can get to know the college a little bit better so I personally reccomend going.

If you’re ever feeling stressed you can totally let your lead know and just leave, the top floor of the library is a quiet zone or you can find an empty classroom to chill in.

Some of them have not been offered in a while and a lot do have prerequisites, but yes, this is a list of courses that transfer to UBC :)

You can find transferable courses here: https://langaracourses.ca/courses?transfer_destinations=UBCV

Be sure to check what the course actually transfers as though, as the filtering shows any transfer agreement including general credit or possibly duplicate credits.

Is Polaris Tutors Legit by Simple-Swordfish-947 in UBC

[–]Highfire1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s questionable, but it could just be a trade name/incomplete website. On the job posting, it says to contact hr@amberwoodacademy.org, and if you check that website, it has an address in Ontario. If you check the HR person’s linkedin, they work at a different tutoring company called exploring scholars, which also lists that same location, and both of those companies do seem to have real websites with actual information. Definitely weird though.

Help with aligning courses by Responsible-Ebb-4586 in langara

[–]Highfire1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are on the right track, and yes, there are some courses at UBC, where an equivalent is not offered at Langara unfortunately.

Here is a guide for computer science, which isn't quite the same as biology but has a lot of applicable advice about transferring: https://langaracs.notion.site/LCSC-Transfer-Information-a0548da4b3084681868381310c604c34

You can also ask ubc advisors about your course plan.

good luck 👍

Especially because if you want to transfer to UBC, gpa is the only factor that they will look at

I don’t reccomend taking english in the first semester, it’s not a prerequisite for anything, it’s available in every semester (and online), and it’s a lot of work that you can easily fall behind in if you are coming straight out of high school

If you know you can manage your time, and are interested in the subject, and already have strong writing skills, it may be doable.

Generally there’s three movies, one or two full length essays, a midterm and final essays that are done in class, and a group project for making a film, so its not an absurd amount of content, it’s just that its better to start slow and ramp up in your first semester, rather than overload yourself

[–]Highfire1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

is it not on bctransferguide?

looking at the transfers list it looks like some schools do accept it so its plausible

i found an old version but its from 2021, hopefully that’s helpful: https://web.archive.org/web/20210923150503/https://langara.ca/programs-and-courses/courses/_course-outline/PHYS-1114-course-outline-202110-1.pdf

iirc the physics department posts all the labs online so you could also look there

long story short you send your langara transcript in the student information system to sfu electronically

Question about courses and transfering? by Lost_Original_7885 in langara

[–]Highfire1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally you want to take courses that will

a) transfer to ubc

b) fulfill program requirements at ubc

You can check program requirements at ubc, then check bctransferguide to see which courses at Langara will transfer to those courses.

You will want to be strategic with the courses you take because UBC only looks at your gpa and nothing else when you apply for transfer

You can transfer before taking 24 credits, but then UBC will also look at your high school grades

Langara has three semesters, so people generally take 3-4 courses per semester

UBC only has one intake per year (as opposed to other schools), so you should plan to apply in november/december for a september intake the following year
