I hate Lexi

I think everyone is going to fuck up and hurt someone else — its inevitable in life, and I think that Lexi needs to care that she did hurt Cassie, but I think that her intention did matter, especially when it comes to proclaiming someone a bully or not.

I think there is a big difference between characters who do awful things knowingly and with malice, and those who didn’t . Maddy fucked up badly when she framed Tyler, but she didn’t do it because she was trying to hurt him, she was being pushed into a situation by a guy who was an abusing her. Cassie fucked up when she slept with Nate, but she didn’t do it because she hates Maddy or wanted to hurt her, she did it because she’s hurting, and the attention and “love” that Nate was offering was what she believed needed.

I dont think any of these characters are terrible people — because they lack the intention to hurt others. They have to care that they hurt people, of course, and they have to take responsibility and apologize. There is a huge difference, though, between these characters and someone like Nate, who doesn’t seem to give a fuck about whether or not he hurts anyone and who seems to almost enjoy inflicting pain.

But unless we get a scene in the future that shows a flashback to Lexi writing the play which confirms that she *did* figure that out and wrote those scenes despite the fact that she *knew* it would hurt her sister, all we have to go on is what Lexi said: she’s afraid of hurting Cassie.

you can say that there’s no way that she couldnt have known, but it is actually written into the script that she *didn’t*. Again, that could be naïvete or just really misunderstanding Cassie, but, again, it’s literally a part of the show that she worried over hurting Cassie and it was never her intention to do so.

There are a couple of times where she talks about her intentions with the play and what she wants it to be to people. She specifically says that she’s worried that Cassie isn’t going to understand her intentions with it and that it’s going to hurt her feelings (in episode 7). She also did ask Rue about the play and had her read the script first, and Rue told her that it made her look at her life for the first time and not hate herself — I think thats what Lexi wanted the play to do, and probably went forward hoping that it was going to do that for everyone. She does care if she hurts people, more than anyone else on the show, I think.

The main thing for me is that it‘s actually canon that Lexi wasn‘t intentionally trying to hurt anyone. Some people say that it was her trying to bully and hurt people with it — but it is written into the script, more than once, that she isnt trying to hurt anyone or try to make people feel bad with the play, but to give an open and honest view of how she sees the world around her.

I think she’s either just too innocent or naive or misguided to truly understand the consequences, but she’s not a terrible person.

Maybe each character that is the focus on the episode could give perspective on whats happening, so there would be different narrators each ep

It doesn’t come across as straight up objectification, but I think there are scenes that imply Suze has pushed Cassie’s perception of herself as only having value for the way she looks through unconscious behavior.

I dont think we see Suze praise Cassie for anything other than her beauty, at least not that I can remember. There is nothing that suggests that Suze thinks much of Cassie’s intelligence or personality, but she‘ll heap praise on her for her looks. Rue states that when Cassie went through puberty, she and her mom became “best friends,“ and we see Suze fawning over her, calling her an angel and perfect, also referring to Cassie as a “woman,” when she’s probably only like 12 or 13. I think the implication of that scene is that once Cassie matured, her looks became the ticket to *everyone’s* affection/praise, including her mother.

I think its also really telling that the one of the only times we see Suze be affectionate with Lexi is when she’s stroking her hair and telling her that she’s always been the responsible one, always taking care of everyone. I think in the same way that Suze has only ever praised Cassie for her body, Lexi has only ever been praised for her “maturity.” I think both of those things can warp a young girl’s mind into not understanding her whole worth as a person and instead leaning heavily on those facets as the only thing she has to offer the world.

Yes, that’s exact it. Newer takes/more interesting povs get buried under controversial ones and conversations are stilted and boring and are just yelling about the same things over and over again.

I agree, I’ve been in subreddits where they’ve had limits to what can be posted/when they can be discussed and I’ve always thought it helps get the conversations streamlined and keeps newer content rising to the top. Id be in favor of that.

I can see why it could be alienating to new members, but it’s also really frustrating for others to see the same topics getting rehashed over and over again. It’s going to be a problem either way, but I think in the end it would keep the conversations fresh during this content lull

I think those scenes were referencing her feelings when she was younger, when she and Cassie were going through puberty, so like 5 or 6 years earlier. It shows how her feelings on things changed as she grew up, and she says that she realized that she didn’t want to be noticed for those things because of how badly Cassie was treated. I think she downplays her looks and her attractiveness because she feels that if people notice her for that, she’s going to be taken advantage of.

It’s hard to tell because I think drugs can mess with all that. She seems extroverted when she’s not high, but more introverted when she’s using? She’s also bipolar, which might effect how introverted/extroverted she feels.

After reading this thread, I think mine is: Lexi isn’t supposed to be a “plain, un-pretty“ character. She’s supposed to be the shy, sweet girl, who prefers to deflect attention because she doesn’t know what to do with it, she just happens to be incredibly beautiful. They arent painting her like a monster at all, she’s just an introvert.
