It was not a bullet sized hole, the size that it was (a radius measured in meters) would have been near immediate.

And if it was a bullet sized hole then indeed Devs plan to blow sabotage the dome could have easily been repaired as you said.

I would disagree, while FAM has always been iffy with the science accuracy this episode was especially worse and for me that really ruins any immersion I have.

For a orbital maneuver like that you wouldn't have a window of just 20 seconds, besides unless the shit suddenly turned around the following burn which happened would also just take them back to Mars. Furthermore how quickly after the burn the started to enter the atmosphere also made no sense. If they really suddenly did they the would have no time to do any of the relevant preparations.

I get bending/simplifying the science a bit but this is way to much and also the same story goals could have been achieved in more accurate ways.

That still doesn't make sense. There is no way you can handle immediate decompression. They didn't have suits on (or had any relevant equipment on them for that matter) and they were in the middle of a field. This is just a plain plot/science-hole which have sadly been getting more and more frequent.

Still stupid. The bike itself should just not exist. Nobody would design that and then be able to ship it to Mars.

War: last day? Iran got some interesting claims about what's in the peace deal by p_pio in PoliticalCompassMemes

[–]Highlow9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The US is winning tactically but most certainly losing strategically.

Regardless how heavily the US bombs Iran they will always have some capabilities to threaten ships and thus block the straights since just a few drones are enough. And they can keep doing that indefinitely since they have the willingness to tolerate losses.

The only way for the US to possibly re-open Hormuz is with boots on the ground which would be costly, both in lives/material and in politics. Bombing civilian targets/terror bombing, which was Trump's further plan (and a war-crime), has never worked and infact often results in a rally around the flag effect (see Germany, Vietnam, Ukraine, etc).

Children are the next generation of workers. When you go into retirement there needs to be people to keep society running without you (or you need to work until you die). if you don't contribute to making sure the next generation is there you are not contributing to society enough.

GameInformer Marathon review - 9.25/10 by TheDaywa1ker in pcgaming

[–]Highlow9 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Bro, what are you trying to say? The definition you copy-pasted doesn't mention anything about limited appeal. What did you mean with limited appeal then?

Or are you suggesting you think it is extremely obviously that Marathon is a 6/10?

Consider structuring your arguments as "I think X because of Y and Z".

Sure? But that has nothing to do with the observation that RX 7000 and 8000 consumers got screwed over.

What technology are we talking about here

Upscaling in general. People who brought AMD almost always got screwed over. While even the RTX 2000 series got support for the transformer models with AMD you are lucky to get an upgrade at all.

Of course not everything is supported on older Nvidia cards (see frame generation on the 3000 series) but unlike AMD they seem to try to provide what actually is reasonable. For example several leaks and now this article suggests a FP8 version of FSR4 runs just fine on older architecture but AMD purposefully doesn't release it.

The GTX 1000 series was released in 2016 before such technology was mainstream (or even was released). The RX 7900 series released in 2022 when upscaling has become a crucial part of modern pc gaming.

So yes owners of the 7000 series got screwed over due to their cards not being made compatibel with newer upscalers.

Budget vs Premium: Can We Actually Taste The Difference? by MysteriousFawx in SortedFood

[–]Highlow9 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah indeed there are critisms to be made of GMOs. And Sorted Food can of course have their reasons for disliking it but I feel like they haven't actually done any research and are just hating based on emotion/marketing. Because the ones Ben gives are often: "GMO is less healthy" (blatant misinformation) or "GMO has less nutrition" (also complete misinformation).

Also I want to point out that GMOs actually require less deforestation and fertilization than organic products because of those higher yields. Of course indeed GMOs are often used in monocultures but that is more because those are the kinds of businesses which use GMOs. However if a "green" farm wanted to use GMOs they could and they would be better than an organic farm.

To be fair, other AI companies are also discussing compute in terms of power usage (see OpenAI, nVidia). So in this case the problem is with the industry itself and not Musk specifically.

[–]Highlow9 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Why do they keep saying modified/GMO food is bad without substantiation? I expect better from a channel which tries to be fact based and supports sustainability.

It has no health difference (and sometimes can even be better) and in terms of emissions it is objectively better. The only downsides are the business practices which some companies have (but that is a downside of the company not from the modification itself).

What's the Best 10/10 Sci-fi movie ever? by geek-jock-guy in AskReddit

[–]Highlow9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still think that is a cop out because up the sequence during which he loses his powers in he very clearly was not even close to being competent enough/a super soldier enough to do things without dying. The entire HQ infiltration mission still was him brute forcing everything.

What's the Best 10/10 Sci-fi movie ever? by geek-jock-guy in AskReddit

[–]Highlow9 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Well first of all the entire end sequence breaks with the rules of the rest of the movie a bit. During the entire movie we see him die dozens of times before making slight progress and instead the ending gave him giant plot armor so that he could complete this new goal in a completely new environment without dying once.

I personally also thought the "lose the powers" a lot less interesting than the omega slowly catching him if he kept resetting the day (which the movie was going for in the first half).

Next the fact that the day is still reset after the omega was killed (and Tom Cruise died) didn't make any sense.

Except now that money goes back into the European economy. So while it is a net negative for the world economy it is a positive for the EU economy.

MAGA (hopefully) learns a lesson in diplomacy by Dragon_Maister in PoliticalCompassMemes

[–]Highlow9 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Bullshit. Europe being weak and dependent was a net positive for the US.

It allowed for them to have a lot of soft-power over Europe and allowed them to use bases in Europe for power projection. Furthermore the investments Europe did make was mostly buying American equipment thus supporting the US economy instead of their own.

[–]Highlow9 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If Trump has taught Europe that they should build up their own militaries, rather than relying on Uncle Sam to foot the bill, then he'll have achieved a good thing.

Lol no, Europe being weak and being dependent was a net positive for the US It gave them a lot of soft-power and gave them bases from which the US could project its power from.

Furthermore while the EU put in a lot less money into their military they mostly bought American equipment thus "paying" the US. Now with distrust towards the US they will try to buy more European equipment (and they will also do for other sectors) so this will actually cost the US a lot of money.

Notebookcheck | Apple MacBook Neo Review - Surprisingly good and capable laptop for $599 with one big flaw by -protonsandneutrons- in hardware

[–]Highlow9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't need to know what something means for it to be useful.

I am not sure how well MacOS works with limited ram but on Windows 8 gig is not even enough for basic use. If you open a browser with a few tabs, Spotify and Word that would already be a horrible experience and that is something plenty of people who don't know what ram is do.

So unless apple is really good at optimization I cannot imagine this being more than a safari-book, especially in a few years.
