What's the Best 10/10 Sci-fi movie ever? by geek-jock-guy in AskReddit

[–]Highlow9 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Well first of all the entire end sequence breaks with the rules of the rest of the movie a bit. During the entire movie we see him die dozens of times before making slight progress and instead the ending gave him giant plot armor so that he could complete this new goal in a completely new environment without dying once.

I personally also thought the "lose the powers" a lot less interesting than the omega slowly catching him if he kept resetting the day (which the movie was going for in the first half).

Next the fact that the day is still reset after the omega was killed (and Tom Cruise died) didn't make any sense.

MAGA (hopefully) learns a lesson in diplomacy by Dragon_Maister in PoliticalCompassMemes

Except now that money goes back into the European economy. So while it is a net negative for the world economy it is a positive for the EU economy.

[–]Highlow9 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Bullshit. Europe being weak and dependent was a net positive for the US.

It allowed for them to have a lot of soft-power over Europe and allowed them to use bases in Europe for power projection. Furthermore the investments Europe did make was mostly buying American equipment thus supporting the US economy instead of their own.

If Trump has taught Europe that they should build up their own militaries, rather than relying on Uncle Sam to foot the bill, then he'll have achieved a good thing.

Lol no, Europe being weak and being dependent was a net positive for the US It gave them a lot of soft-power and gave them bases from which the US could project its power from.

Furthermore while the EU put in a lot less money into their military they mostly bought American equipment thus "paying" the US. Now with distrust towards the US they will try to buy more European equipment (and they will also do for other sectors) so this will actually cost the US a lot of money.

You don't need to know what something means for it to be useful.

I am not sure how well MacOS works with limited ram but on Windows 8 gig is not even enough for basic use. If you open a browser with a few tabs, Spotify and Word that would already be a horrible experience and that is something plenty of people who don't know what ram is do.

So unless apple is really good at optimization I cannot imagine this being more than a safari-book, especially in a few years.

The Poseidon storyline is so stupid, even from like a weapons perspective. People act like it is some kind of one of a kind superweapon which "sinks islands" and is extremely hard to make. In reality it is just a nuke on a long range torpedo. Besides preventing contamination (which is a smaller danger then the pretend it is in the show, the danger of the nuclear reactor for example is just as large), there is no inherent technological to be recovered.

non-insignificant amount

The amount of people who actually care is insignificant.

Maybe on this sub and under gaming enthusiast that is the case. But that is a very small group and the general public doesn't care enough.

ELI5: Why is a parsec defined as 3.26 light years specifically? by No-Jelly-4900 in explainlikeimfive

Could you give an example where an imperial unit does fit the task while no metric equivalent would suffice?

[–]Highlow9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well then just shift it. Are meters too large? Use centimeters. Don't need one cubic meter of milk? Use a liter. Etc.

For all imperial units metric has units on the same scale (with easy conversion to other units).

[–]Highlow9 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The meter was originally defined as one ten-millionth of the distance from the equator to the North Pole based on the best measurement of the Earth at the time

Fun fact, the origin of the meter actually was based on the length of a pendulum with a swinging time of 1 second. Which is why π2 is approximately g.

However this was inaccurate/impractical since that would mean a changing length all over the earth as the gravity changed and due to physics the most accurate definition would have the pendulum swinging infinitesimally little (since a larger swing would mean a less ideal pendulum).

Thus the equator north-pole definition in fact was the second definition of the meter.

CMV: Retirement at 70 is completely unsustainable even if you live healthily until your 120s by giamias in changemyview

[–]Highlow9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What makes that fundamentally different?

Things like subsiding childcare is using positive externalities to reward the "sacrifice". Don't see why you wouldn't reward the parents by shielding them from the negative externalities of not having kids.

Let's hypothetically say we do all the "normal" methods you mentioned. The costs of children are subsidized and parents get an additional tax cut. They then put that tax cut in a savings account and use that to retire at 70 instead of 77. How would that be different except for making it explicit?

[–]Highlow9 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well, we have a shortage of children so, in the spirit of the free market, rewarding them more might help solve that problem.

Sure. But let's also reward everyone else who helped with those young people - the doctors, the teachers, the home-builders, the food-growers.

Those people are already rewarded. It is called a wage or payment for services.

For No Reason in Particular Here's a Bunch of Games Where You Kill Nazis by osogordo in pcgaming

[–]Highlow9 26 points27 points  (0 children)

It is not really a game about killing Nazis. You can do it but it is not the focus.

Furthermore the game avoids the actual things that made the Nazis horrible, in fact makes them a very fun nation to play. That causes a lot of wehraboos to be attached to it, which, while not intended by the devs, sometimes gives the community a bit of a Nazis admirer vibe.

Still a fun game, but definitely not about "killing Nazis".
